It's quite a sight: no less than 6 crane vessels from Paans Van Oord at work on the Afsluitdijk. In various locations, sections of the seabed are being excavated and transported by our vessels to be reused elsewhere along the Afsluitdijk. A nice example of circularity. โป๏ธ
Additionally, we are installing fascine mattresses at various points to protect the seabed. This is being done near the new discharge sluices at Den Oever, as well as at the Fish Migration River, where migratory fish swim from the Wadden Sea into the IJsselmeer. The fascine mattresses, made of geotextile topped with braided willow branches, protect the seabed from erosion when discharging large volumes of water. The placement of these mattresses involves precise positioning of quarry stone. Craftsmanship at its finest! ๐
The Levvel consortium (BAM, Van Oord, Rebel, and Invesis) is working with various expertises on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat to strengthen the Afsluitdijk and construct one of the largest pumping stations in Europe.

The construction of the impressive offshore installation vessel Boreas all depends on working with the right people. Colleague Johan de Graaf has been involved in the building process from the early stages as Project Manager Newbuilding and has been overseeing the construction from close by. ๐

We have been awarded the contract for the transport and installation of the monopile foundations for the Nordseecluster offshore wind project in Germany by RWE. This project award is a major milestone for us, because it will be the first project for brand-new offshore installation vessel Boreas, which is currently under construction.
Our scope includes the installation of 104 extended monopiles as well as the installation of the scour protection. 44 monopiles are planned for installation in 2025 and the remaining 60 in 2027. The 1.6 GW wind farm cluster is expected to generate enough renewable energy to supply the equivalent of 1,600,000 German households. ๐ก

We have been contracted the construction of the German Windanker offshore wind farm by the Spanish energy company Iberdrola. A great addition to our portfolio of offshore wind projects in the Baltic Sea, highlighting our experience in the area and leading position in the energy transition.
Our scope includes the transport and installation of 21 XL monopiles and transition pieces and the design, supply and installation of the inter-array cable grid. We will deploy our heavy-lift installation vessel Svanen, cable-laying vessel Nexus and trencher Dig-It.
Windanker will have an installed capacity of 300 MW and is expected to be commissioned in 2026.

Our offshore installation vessel Ae**us has installed the first monopile foundation at the RWE Sofia Offshore Wind Farm. The monopiles have a diameter of up to 8.8 metres, an impressive length of up to 92 metres and a weight of up to 1,530 tonnes. The Ae**us is well prepared and equipped to install monopiles with these dimensions. โ
The 1.4 GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm will have enough capacity to power 1.2 million average UK homes. Being one of the largest offshore wind projects in the world, it will be another step forward to enhancing the energy transition once completed.
In the coming months, we will install a total of 100 monopile foundations and later this year, cable-laying vessel Calypso and trencher Dig-it will be deployed to install the 360 kilometres of array cables. ๐

This weekend, an important milestone took place in the construction process of the Boreas: the offshore installation vessel was successfully launched. The Boreas is now finally in the habitat where it belongs, the sea! ๐
The Boreas fits in with our sustainability ambitions: it is the first of its kind to be able operate on the future fuel methanol, and the vessel will be equipped with a cutting-edge active emissions control technology to reduce the NOx emission to an absolute minimum. An about 6,000 kWh battery pack can take peak loads and regenerate energy to reduce the fuel consumption and corresponding emissions even further. โฌ๏ธ
Next up will be the installation of the main crane and the extension of the legs of the jack-up vessel. The vesselโs technical installation will also be further commissioned, after which sea trails will take place to test the performances. ๐

In just a night, Van Oordโs heavy lift installation vessel Svanen grew 25 metres taller. As part of a major upgrade, a huge A-framed gantry extension, weighing 1,200 tonnes, has been installed on top of the vessel.
The operation increased the total height of the Svanen to 125 metres, making it one of the largest heavy-lift vessels in the world. The improved Svanen will be ready for operation in the third quarter of 2024. ๐
Due to the worldwide demand for renewable energy, wind farm technology is progressing swiftly, with turbines continually increasing in size. This major upgrade is preparing the Svanen to handle the next generation of monopile foundations for offshore wind projects.

On Friday, 26 April, Pieter van Oord was honoured with the Wolfert van Borselen medal during his farewell reception as CEO of Van Oord. Yesterday, we celebrated the christening of two new hybrid water injection dredgers, Rijn and Rhรดne, along with our latest unmanned survey vessel, VO:X Barentsz. We look back at a festive day full of memorable milestones! ๐
The Rijn and Rhรดne are among the most sustainable water injection dredgers to date and will have the Ultra Low Emission Vessel (ULEV) notation of the classification society. The combination of hybrid energy management systems, heat recovery systems and exhaust gas aftertreatment devices reduce the vesselsโ emissions of greenhouse gases significantly.
VO:X Barentsz joins our fleet as the fifth unmanned autonomous survey vessel (USV), enhancing our ability to gather precise data for clients while cutting costs. This new edition to our USV fleet is an evolution of the four other USVs and is specialised for operations at sea. ๐

No less than 3 yards, 16 offices and departments, 33 project teams and 34 vessel crews from all over the world recently took part in Van Oordโs annual companywide Stand Down for Safety. The aim, as always, is to raise safety awareness by speaking up and challenging each other to work in a safe environment. ๐ทโโ๏ธ
All colleagues paused their work and dedicated time to pay attention to a safe, clean and tidy workspace. Why? Because care for people is in the very heart of our organisation and good housekeeping prevents many hazardous situations. The consequences of potential slips, trips and dropped objects are significant enough to deserve full attention.
โWorking safe means paying attention to the smallest details, like good housekeeping. It is a really important contribution to a proactive safety cultureโ, says Project Manager Eric Bouman. โIt is not a once in a year event, but an ongoing operation which is embedded in our daily routines.โ

Fehmarn Belt Contractors (FBC), a joint venture between Van Oord and Boskalis, has completed the dredging work for the tunnel trench of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel between Denmark and Germany. Van Oordโs trailing suction hopper dredger Vox Amalia together with Boskalisโ trailing suction hopper dredgers Crestway and Shoalway recently dredged the last cubic meters from the 18-kilometer-long trench in the seabed after almost three years of dredging to create the trench. With this FBC is signing off on the dredging work for the tunnel trench.
FBCโs dredging work is not quite finished, as the final part of this project, the embankments around the tunnel entrances on both the German and Danish sides will be removed, including dredging the underlying connection of the trench. Once this done in the next months, the installation of the tunnel elements in the trench by another contractor will start to form the longest immersed tunnel in the world.
It consists of a direct road and rail connection between Germany and Denmark, thus becoming the fastest route between Scandinavia and Central Europe for both passenger and freight transport. ๐

Van Oord completed the largest beach restoration in Spainโs history, restoring the beaches south of the city of Valencia to their original size. Our largest trailing suction hopper dredger, the HAM 318, was deployed to apply 3.3 million cubic metres of sand. ๐ช
The widened beaches protect low-lying communities, agricultural areas and the Albufera National Park. Additionally, new dunes were formed by combining sand with sand collectors and newly planted vegetation. In total 75.5 kilometres of sand collectors and 44,000 plants were placed with the aim to not only safeguard the natural environment, but also to enhance its ecological resilience. ๐ฑ

Van Oordโs cutter suction dredger Biesbosch and trailing suction hopper dredger Vox Apolonia are teaming up to dredge the Prinses Amaliahaven located on Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. โ
Together with consortium partners HOCHTIEF and BallastNedam, Van Oord constructed 1,825 metres of deep-sea quay, 160 metres of inland shipping quay and 360 metres of earth-retaining walls. These new quays are now being dredged to a depth of more than 20 metres below sea level. This development means that the Port of Rotterdam Authority is ensuring an expansion of container capacity in Rotterdam. ๐ณ

Van Oord concluded 2023 with strong results: revenue reached record high and profits more than doubled. Compared to last year, we saw revenue growth across both our Dredging & Infra and Offshore Energy business units, which resulted in a significantly revenue increase of 42% to EUR 2.9 billion from EUR 2.0 billion in 2022. Net profit doubled to EUR 127 million from EUR 60 million in 2022.
High fleet utilisation and the continued sharp focus on risk and contract management contributed to the improved results. Solvency was stable at 32.5% and the net debt position improved to EUR 152 million as of 31 December 2023, despite an extremely high investment level. The order book increased by 3% to EUR 4,429 million from EUR 4,300 million in 2022. From an operational and financial perspective, 2023 proved to be an extremely busy year for Van Oord and one of substantial growth and recovery.

Based on a shared sustainability ambition, Van Oord and Van Aalsburg have partnered and joined forces to further develop and realise circular fascine mattresses. Fascine mattresses are mats of twisted willow that play an important role in maintaining embankment stability and protecting waterways against erosion. ๐
Because many fascine mattresses contain microplastics, Van Aalsburg developed a natural alternative; fascine mattresses with jute cloth. In this construction, bundles of twisted willow, are tied on jute cloth.
The signing of the collaboration agreement is in line with Van Oord's vision to create a better world for future generations through Marine Ingenuity and innovative customisation. In the context of Building with Nature, Van Oord strives to create sustainable solutions using natural materials. ๐ฑ

Paans van Oord, a subsidiary of Van Oord, has completed work on the second emergency dam in the river Meuse, Maastricht. Due to high water, the spillway dam was damaged in early January 2024, with part of the lining of the dam washed away. Due to the strong current, it proved impossible to close the hole in the dam at short notice.
Paans van Oord was commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat and Mourik to build two temporary emergency dams. Now that the second emergency dam is in place, work can begin on permanently restoring the spillway dam. ๐ง
Peter Brand, Project Manager at Paans van Oord: 'It was a complex emergency operation that involved a lot of effort from all parties involved. The intensive collaboration and mutual trust between Rijkswaterstaat, Mourik, Boorsma and Paans Van Oord resulted in an almost impossible prestation. I am very proud of that!โ

We are restoring navigational depths in the Port of Krishnapatnam in India. After a severe cyclone the channels of the port were silted up and depths reduced considerably. ๐
Trailing suction hopper dredger HAM 318 is removing the material from the navigation channel and safeguards the accessibility of the port area for large vessels. In total, approximately 5 million cubic metres of material will be removed. ๐ช

A significant milestone has been reached for the Millport Coastal Flood Protection Scheme. In less than 5 months Van Oord has successfully positioned more than 140,000 tonnes of rock to create breakwaters and revetments to critically reduce coastal floodings due to storms. ๐
North Ayrshire Council contracted Van Oord and its subsidiary Mackley for the Millport project, located on the stunning Scottish Island of Great Cumbrae. With the completion of the breakwaters, the focus remains on finishing the onshore works. ๐ทโ

The Netherlands is working on the largest d**e reinforcement operation ever since the Delta Works: the Flood Protection Programme (HWBP). More than 1,500 kilometres of d**es will be reinforced over the next 30 years with high ambitions for sustainability and innovation. โป๏ธ
Project Strong Lek D**e made it possible to investigate the Mixed-In-Place (MIP) method, a technique to reinforce d**es in built-up areas in an efficient and sustainable way. Van Oord and HITEC Road have signed a contract to further develop the Mixed-In-Place (MIP) method. โ
Unlike the usual methods for d**e reinforcement, the MIP method allows a d**e to be strengthened without expanding it. The existing foundation of the d**e is combined with a mixture of existing soil and binder to create a wall. This makes the method efficient and sustainable. ๐๐ผ
A fantastic solution for a country where space is scarce and where, for example, homes, farms and historical buildings are close to the d**es.

The Polish cities of Szczecin and ลwinoujลcie are home to one the largest ports in the Baltic Sea area. The channel that connects both port areas had been modernised by a joint-venture between Van Oord and DEME Group.
Deepening and widening the fairway improved access to the Szczecin seaport and increased the port capacity to handle a growing volume of cargo. Where it used to be able to handle ships with 20,000 tonnes of cargo, it can now handle double the amount. โฌ๏ธ
The material that had been removed from the fairway had been used to create two artificial islands in the Szczecin lagoon with several habitats for rare bird species. ๐ฆ

We are excited to announce that Van Oord has been contracted for the construction of the Baltica 2 Offshore Wind Farm, developed by รrsted and PGE. Located 40 kilometres offshore in the Polish area of the Baltic Sea, this wind farm will be the largest-ever renewable energy project in Poland, producing enough green energy to cover the power consumption of approximately 2.4 million Polish households. ๐
Van Oord will deploy offshore installation vessel Ae**us and heavy-lift installation vessel Svanen to transport and install 111 extended monopiles. After the upgrade of the Svanen, the heavy-lift installation vessel will be able to install the foundations for the new generation 14 MW wind turbines used at the Baltica 2 Offshore Wind Farm. ๐๐ผ
The foundations for this offshore wind farm are extended monopiles, combining the traditional combination of a monopile and transition piece in one element. This saves lifting activities offshore and makes the installation safer and faster. Van Oordโs flexible fallpipe vessel Nordnes will be deployed to accurately and efficiently install rock at all foundation locations. โ

Together with our partners HOCHTIEF CZ a. s. and Ballast Nedam, we are working on the expansion of Princess Amaliahaven on behalf of Haven Rotterdam. We are constructing 2.5 kilometres of new inland shipping and deep-sea quays, which will have a depth of max. 20 metres. Part of the project involves surveying and inspecting the underwater works. Normally this is done with the use of divers, but now a handheld ROV drone is being deployed for the first time to take underwater images. ๐ธ
The remotely operated underwater drone, a kind of underwater robot, features a high-resolution 4K camera and sonar technology. The sonar measurements are converted into images, making it possible for everyone within the project to understand what is happening underwater. Even in turbid water we can safely and efficiently map, for example, quay walls and the soil. This means a reliable inspection can be done in all kinds of conditions. ๐
The ROV drone can be used for various works and inspections. In Amaliahaven, we are visualising our dredging activities along the quays thanks to the ROV drone. A real example of Marine ingenuity. ๐ก

Achieving a high score with CDP reflects an organisation's transparency in disclosing environmental impact. Amongst others, our increased efforts towards emission accounting in all three emission scopes and setting a credible 1.5 degree target on these emissions took us to the leadership band. ๐๐ผ

Van Oord started reclamation works for a new quay in Paldiski South Harbour in Estonia. The new quay is meant to accelerate the development of offshore wind energy in Estonia and the Baltic States. ๐จ
Van Oordโs trailing suction hopper dredger Vox Amalia has arrived to supply approximately 830,000 cubic metres of sand to create 10 hectares of land for the new quay. The sand is dredged from a borrow area on the northern coast of Hiiumaa, about 125 kilometres from the port. The new quay is scheduled to be completed in 2025. โ

This time, the surroundings are equally stunning, albeit more than 20 degrees colder. Welcome in the winter wonderland of Dirdal, a village in the south-west of Norway. โ
The Stornes is filling its haul with rocks before setting sail for Scotland, where its cargo will be used at the Seagreen offshore wind farm.
Seagreen wind farm can generate around 5,000 GWh of renewable energy annually. That is enough clean and sustainable electricity to power more than 1.6 million UK homes, making a significant contribution to Scotlandโs and the UKโs net zero targets. โ

The preparations for the offshore installation of the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm are in full swing at Van Oord. To make sure that every aspect of the installation have been considered, the project team used a foundation mock-up to execute a test installation. The test took place at our subcontractor Aarsleff in Poland. โ
Van Oordโs offshore installation vessel Ae**us will be deployed to install the 100 WTG monopile foundations. For this project extended monopiles will be used, eliminating the need of a transition piece. To complete the monopiles once installed offshore, Van Oord installs secondary components which consist of main access platforms, internal platforms, boat landings and upper ladders. The internal and main access platforms will be used for maintenance activities once the wind farm is operational. During the mock-up a wooden dummy was used to simulate the upper part of the monopile. During the test, a main access platform and internal platform were installed, among other finishing works.

The Sofia offshore wind farm is located on Dogger Bank in the central North Sea, 195 kilometres from the North East Coast of the UK. Van Oord has been contracted by RWE for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of the monopile foundations and array cables for this project. The 1.4 GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm is one of the worldโs largest offshore wind projects. ๐จ
