His world is always in motion. Freek Rutkens, 3D motion designer of Studio Piraat, brings brands to life through animation. Originally starting out as a graphic designer, he became more and more fond of moving the designs he created.
“The process of animating is a lot of trial and error. My favourite phase is the final fine-tuning. That’s where you add all the small details that make a huge difference in the end.”

As pirates, we embrace each others characters and focus on creating a space where creativity flows freely. On top of that, we love a good challenge that triggers our minds.
A couple of weeks ago, we got to combine both worlds. During our team day, we did a graffiti workshop, followed by escape room games. We ended the day with a nice dinner. What a day!
Sarah Frühwirt crossed borders to intern at Studio Piraat. The Austrian communication design graduate decided to dive deeper into branding. Ever since joining us in June, she’s learned a lot about the branding process and gained insights into her own strengths and ambitions.
“At Studio Piraat; no week looks the same, it always changes. I get to work on many different projects. So far, I’ve created an animation, icons, infographics, and tons of other designs. On top of that, I personally got to design and present a rebranding. I love that we get to work for a variety of clients.”

The Volvo Ocean Race is an annual sailboat race between nationalities from all over the world. In 2018, its finish took place in The Hague. Around the time of the event, our adventurous, highly recognisable, and dynamic branding could be found everywhere in The Hague, on trams, buildings, and signs near the Hofvijver.

As creative director Fabian Meijer keeps an eye on everything we create at Studio Piraat. Since founding the studio 20 years ago he has gained a ton of experience and has seen the industry shift and evolve.
His personal favorite subject? Infographics. “They enable you to clarify complex content through a simple illustration that people can understand. This is what I like to put my creativity into. Infographics trigger people to want to understand complex subjects.”

Al twee decennia navigeert Studio Piraat door de wereld van ontwerp en strategie en bouwen we aan de mooiste merken. Wij proosten op onze samenwerkingen, piraten en kapiteins aan het roer. Met een flinke dosis ervaring en onverminderd optimisme zetten we koers naar de toekomst.
Hi, I am Renate! I will be creating/thinking/drinking coffee at Studio Piraat for the coming 5 months during my design internship. Currently, I am studying graphic design at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Whenever I am not creating/thinking/drinking coffee, you can find me playing sports! I love to work out, play hockey, go bouldering or take my racing bike to some place new. So hit me up for anything related to art & design and sports!🤙🏼

Wat zijn we trots! Studio Piraat staat in de FONK Top 100 van de Nederlandse bureauwereld. In deze ‘Lijst der Lijsten’ zijn we verkozen tot nummer 1 designbureau van Nederland in de categorie designbureaus-middelgroot. We scoorde een 9,03 gemiddeld over maar liefst dertien disciplines!

Als piraten voelde we ons enorm thuis op toch een soort van bootjes op het water! Afgelopen vrijdag hadden we een leuk actief teamuitje gevolgd door een top BBQ met kampvuur en al! Fijn om weer bij elkaar te zijn.

Met de nodige ambitie en het enthousiasme wordt onze managementteam per direct versterkt met de toetreding van Dion van der Spek en Sean Nelissen. Samen met onze huidige partners Jasper De Vink en Fabian Meijer vaart onze piraten boot een nieuwe verfrissende koers.

Dion is een merkenbouwer pur sang. Hij richt zich als Strategy Director samen met het team op de ontwikkeling en activering van merken. Sean ademt branding. Als Creative Director richt hij zich op het proces van de creatieve vertaling van de merkstrategie tot de volledige beleving van het merk. Dion en Sean hebben zich in de jaren dat ze bij Studio Piraat werken bewezen als talentvolle merkenbouwers.
“Dit ambitieuze duo gaat nu ook in het managementteam hun talenten inzetten om eveneens op deze positie bij te dragen aan het doorontwikkelen van het bureau en de kracht van branding. Deze stap geeft een nieuwe dimensie, grotere slagkracht en ruimte om met elkaar en onze opdrachtgevers te blijven groeien”, aldus Jasper de Vink, partner en Managing Director van Studio Piraat.
“Deze samenstelling stelt ons in staat merkstrategie en branding versterkt te verankeren in de bedrijfsvoering van Studio Piraat. Met hun professionele en frisse blik zijn Dion en Sean een waardevolle aanvulling op het management team. Novulo is a software company and the website we made reflects all the elements we provided them with for their brand identity. The website is timeless and unique, and it distinguishes itself from competitors within the high-tech-IT industry with its simplicity and elegance combined with modern and progressive elements.

After a thorough strategy session, a brand story was constructed for Veilig.nl. This is a fundamental part of the branding process for a company because the content of the brand story will form the base of the strategy, visual identity and communication.
Two archetypes were picked to embody Veilig.nl: the sage and the caregiver. The sage archetype revolves around knowledge and truth. This archetype is trusted because he knows the facts and avoids uncertainty. Consequently, this is a perfect match for Veilig.nl who provides knowledge and products for safe situations. However, Veilig is not only a know-it-all, but they are also focused on making sure everyone is taken care of. Their goal is to help others and to nurture people. The archetype that fits these characteristics is the caregiver. The caregiver gives Veilig.nl a softer, warmer and more humanly side.
These two archetypes were translated back into all elements of the brand and can be seen very clearly, for example, in the brand promise of Veilig.nl: ‘Veilig.nl; de kortste weg naar een veilig gevoel’ (Eng: Veilig.nl; the shortest path to a safe feeling). ‘The shortest path’ is a strong statement that is very confident and speaks of facts. This refers back to the know-it-all/wise sage archetype. ‘To a safe feeling’, however, is a softer message allowing the caregiver archetype to come forward. This is a more nurturing message that is caring and compassionate.

With in-depth interviews and a strategic session we formed a brand passport with launch! and this is the final result! Their international character, which is still open and accessible and also focuses on people, formed the base for launch! as a brand. The core? We are moving forward together.
In combination with a dynamic set of icons, international cities shown in photography, and a firm but subtle font, we created a visual environment for launch! that is in line with their sky-high ambitions!

Details are extremely important when it comes to creating a brand. The things that many people do not consciously think about are exactly the things that give a brand style. ✨
For Flossy we have chosen to go with a chique font in the big titles that will seduce readers with its round shapes and high line contrasts in the letters. To bring some structure back in the text, a neat and modern font has been selected for the supporting text. This brings elegance with its round and wide letters.
To keep information clear for readers, a clear hierarchy in text can be found within the Flossy style. To make this happen, we offered a structure for the brand to hold on to.

We are honored to announce that we are working for Veilig.nl, the safest webshop of the Netherlands. We have created a brand identity for them that exactly falls in line with their mission, vision, and values. A visual identity, as well as a strategy and business concept, were provided for Veilig.nl and in the following weeks, we will take you with us to present how we did this based on holding branding sessions, making a brandbook, and forming a concept.
First of all, we want to introduce you to their logo. It is neat and calm, but the little pop of color gives it a playful twist. The V in the logo is recognizable because it refers to a check for safety as well as a check on a checklist. The color of the V can vary in the future so that it can be used for different purposes.
The pay-off: ‘Nederlands veiligste webshop’ (English: safest webshop of the Netherlands) brings a communicative context to the word mark. We provided Veilig.nl with two different options: a compact version and a longer version. Ideally, we will always use the compact version, but if this is somehow not possible, the longer version can be used as well.

After almost half a year of joining us, it is time to say goodbye to our design intern Wesley. Wes is in his third year of studying graphic design at Willem de Koning Academy and his love for design started when he was still a kid. He was always interested in illustrating and graffiti, and over the years, he developed a passion for typography. He focuses more on autonomous art now - in the form of abstract typography in public spaces and expositions.
He describes his internship as nothing but positive: “it was very pleasant and educational. Especially the team and the way everybody treats each other within the studio made going there a lot of fun. I never experienced a day that I went to the Studio with reluctance”. He mentions that there was much attention for him as an intern, but that he also got a lot of freedom and responsibility.
In the future, Wes hopes to make more autonomous art and to get his own clients for this. He aims to start his own business with his own employees. Studio Piraat gave him essential business insights that will be very useful for him in the future. However, he also says: “I never know what is going to happen. I might also just let this go and start doing something totally different”.
Congratulations on a job well done, Wesley, and a lot of luck in your future career!

“Flossy /ˈflɒsi/: stylish, glamorous, excessively showy” is the definition of the brand Mariëtte created. We asked her a few questions about her brand and our work together, and we would like to share them with you:
1. Why did you start Flossy?
“I think there is a big gap in the hospitality sector that needs to be filled. Now, it’s too often the case that you notice that people are being ‘nice’, but most of the time, it does not feel sincere. With ‘Flossy Flowers and Coffee’, I hope to make a change. Flowers don’t tell, they show, and at Flossy, the moments of enjoyment should always feel true.”
2. How did you come up with the idea to combine coffee with flowers?
“Well, initially, Flossy was supposed to become a boutique hotel with a coffee bar attached to it, but due to COVID this plan had to change. I decided to keep the coffee bar idea but add flowers to it. My father used to be a florist, and Flossy is the perfect opportunity to carry on his legacy. That means a lot. Also, Gouda did not really have anything like Flossy yet and I felt like it was really missing.”
3. What was your experience working with Studio Piraat?
“I experienced working with Studio Piraat as very pleasant. They gave me enough time and space wherever I needed it and besides being creative, they were also very flexible. They really took a load off my shoulders wherever they could. They thought along with me and they also took a step further and suggested ideas whenever I overlooked something. In short, it was very pleasant and easy to work with Studio Piraat.”
