There is a desperate need for e-lending in European libraries.
Eurostat statistics show that digital literates - “those people who are able to carry out online transactions, pay a bill or use the digital services offered by the public administration” and read e-books – only account for less than half the European population.
If e-lending transactions remain so low, how can the general rate of digital literacy increase? Through which resources can a Europe that is smarter, more connected, more social and closer to its citizens enhance its pe*******on among an alerted citizenship?

Sign the Declaration of Democracy!
In many countries – also in Europe- this role of libraries is threatened or even under attack.
EBLIDA has therefore worked with the Council of Europe on Recommendations on Library Legislation and Policy in Europe to protect the independence of library professionals and the role of the library as democratic institution.
In the USA the Urban Libraries Council has launched a Declaration of Democracy --> http://www.eblida.org/news/eclaration-of-democracy.html

EBLIDA Newsletter January 2023 Happy New Year!
E-lending plays a key role in making information and culture available to a larger audience. E-lending has the potential to strengthen access to information and culture for people with disabilities and people with a lower income, or socioeconomic status in our society. It can be difficult for both groups of people to come to the premises of a library, but these are the people who are probably most dependent on libraries as a source of information...

Why EBLIDA?
The European Bureau of Library, Information and Documentation Associations (EBLIDA) is a grassroots organisation founded in 1992 by a group of National Library Associations who were faced with new European library policy initiatives, a European library research agenda and impending legislation which would impact on the core functions of libraries in their countries.
They quickly recognised the need for a European association representing libraries to act as a bridge between the national associations and the European institutions whose policies were directly affecting their work. Since then, the single internal market, the changing information landscape and burgeoning European policy initiatives have kept EBLIDA very busy.
Why lobby?
It is important to lobby because about 80% of our national legislation originates from the European Union. This means that by the time a European Directive reaches your national shore, most of the policy has already been decided. So it is essential to have a say in the process that leads up to this decision. That’s where EBLIDA comes in. The job of EBLIDA is to lobby. We lobby the European Commission, European Parliament, Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) on behalf of European libraries and archives.
