In the last few weeks, GHRD hosted multiple events at the career days of Tilburg University. Our colleagues introduced GHRD, explaining the structure of our organization and the various ways in which we advocate for human rights. We appreciated the interest of university students in the work that we do, and we hope to have motivated new voices to join the fight for human rights. A big thank you to Tilburg Career Days and Economic Business weeks Tilburg (EBT) for hosting us!
GHRD is proud to announce the last edition to our movie lineup for the Human Rights Festival Womenâs Rights Edition: âThrust Into Heavenâ!
Navigating around stereotypes of Islam and non-Muslim belonging in Pakistan, Thrust into Heaven showcases instances of so-called âforced conversionsâ of Hindu girls to Islam. Struggling for a dialogic approach to this sensitive topic, this film aims to give room to the various interpretations that emerge around the alleged forced conversion of Hindu women to Islam in Pakistan.

Global Human Rights Defence is happy to announce the fourth movie of our upcoming Human Rights Film Festival The Hague: Women's Rights edition:
"Junax"!
"Junax: Thread by Thread", is a story of women emancipation and empowerment through labor and knowledge. Junax (which in tzeltal means âunitedâ) follows the steps of Victoria, a young indigenous Mexican who initiated a traditional back-strap weaving activity.
This female-led initiative not only represents how emancipation can be achieved by collaboration and reciprocal support, but also highlights its inner value for the upcoming generations.
Junax was submitted to us by Director Ambra Reijnen and we are looking forward to showcasing two snippets as sneak preview on 30th of June!

We are happy to announce the third movie of our Human Rights Film Festival the Hague Women's Rights edition: "Farangis".
What is important: Tradition or innovation? Marriage or independence? Should a marriage be based on love or agreement? These and other topics are explored in this documentary, by following the everyday life of Farangis Kosymova, a 25 years old Tajik ballet dancer. Farangis reflects on some of her main life choices, and focuses on her decision of not getting married. As she shares her opinions while also in dialogue with her family and friends, the documentary displays the complexity of pursuing an individual's will while dealing with a societyâs traditions and rules.

What Happened? The liberation war of Bangladesh
This movie is a Global Human Rights Defence production.
GHRD sent two of our researchers and movie makers to Bangladesh to research the matter close to our heart. Since GHRD was founded in 2003, our work is deeply rooted in the areas of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, motivated by atrocities and human rights violations which happened in the past and are happening to this date.
The movie will be presented for the very first time in Brussels, in May 2023. Our audience can further enjoy the movie at our Human Rights Film Festival The Hague in June.
Enjoy the trailer and sneak peak to âWhat Happened?â and let us know your thoughts.

From the 12th to the 16th of March 2023 the GHRD team attended the United Nations 52nd regular session of the Human Rights Council.
The team spent the week conducting interviews with delegates and fellow NGOs at the official GHRTV tent in front of the broken chair, as well as interviewing the spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Marta Hutado, who discussed the cost of living, as well as the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, and the High Commissioners intentions and goals for this 52nd regular session.
The GHRD team attended a number of Interactive Dialogues with differing topics, including Counter-Terrorism, Disabilities, Human Rights Defenders, Violence against children, and Children in Armed Conflict.
You can find more details on the reports and articles concerning the dialogues discussions on GHRD.org, as well as news bursts on GHRTV.org!
The team also attended a number of side events, parallel events, and Informal consultations, with GHRDs board member Kavita Pajan attending and speaking at a conference hosted by the Baloch Human Rights council! To round it all off, the GHRD attended a demonstration by the World Sindhi Congress against alleged human rights violations within Pakistan.
The highlight of the week was GHRDs very own parallel event being hosted within the United Nations Office, in which speakers engaged in an interactive discussion on different issues related to current human rights concerns in the state of Pakistan, ending with an interactive Q&A with the audience. Our guest speakers on the panel included Lakhu Luhana WSC, Thierry Valle, Dr. Naseer Dashti, and Manel Msalmi.
This was an action packed week for the GHRD team, make sure to check out the numerous articles published by the our amazing team on GHRD.org covering the events attended within the United Nations.
This week GHRD is saying goodbye to two long-term supporters, colleagues and friends: Eva Bredenbeek and Emma Barnhoorn. Two of our dearest co-workers and companions.
The former coordinator of the Women's Rights team Ms. Bredenbeek and the former coordinator of the Pakistan team Ms. Barnhoorn, are taking on new positions and journeys outside of GHRD.
We want to express our gratitude for their constant support, as coordinators and before as interns. Their kind hearts, humor, professionalism, creativity and enthusiasm will be truly missed by their respective teams, by the director, chairman and board. We thank them for the crucial role they have played during events; the role especially Ms. Bredenbeek took on during the trips to the European Parliament in Brussels and the Human Rights Council in Geneva in 2022.
We are sure that both will achieve great things in their respective fields, for human rights and womens rights around the globe.
We at GHRD wish Ms. Bredenbeek a great trip and Ms. Barnhorn great success at her new job. We trust that Ms. Chen in team Pakistan and Ms. Igdir in the Women's Rights team will do their best to follow their example!
You both will be truly missed at GHRD!

On the 10th of December, International Human Rights Day, Global Human Rights Defence is hosting the âHousing Vulnerability Talkâ.
Where?
At the Nutshuis Den Haag, just two minutes away from Grote Markt.
Why?
The ongoing housing crisis in the Netherlands is affecting the most vulnerable disproportionately. Students, people of color, members of LGBTQIA+, and many minority groups are facing extreme housing vulnerability. Many find themselves having to resort to unsafe and unstable living conditions with no tenure security.
Global Human Rights Defence is conducting the 2022 GHRD Housing Vulnerability Survey to document the difficulties residents of the Netherlands have faced in their search for housing. The results we have received so far are quite concerning. GHRD has uncovered a pattern of exploitation of power between housing providers and tenants. Numerous accounts of discrimination in the search for housing were found.
At this event, victims of housing discrimination and public policy makers will be in engaged in discussions on the challenges involved in this crisis and potential solutions.
Hurry up and register before all seats are taken at the link below! https://www.eventbrite.nl/e/housing-vulnerability-talk-on-international-human-rights-day-tickets-465083325747
