About Oslo Apiary & Aviary

Is your business secured in the case of ecological collapse? Or are you unsure?
Let US find out!

Oslo Apiary & Aviary is a dark-ecological tools, goods and service provider. We work in the overlap between art and ecosystemic change, specializing in urban husbandry; Feeding birds, growing worms, keeping bees, tending trees.

A consistent line running through our work is an inspection of the performative qualities of the separation of urbanity-nature and the private-public domain: By tending plants, birds and insects in the city, we question what types of life belongs where. By subjugating ourselves to urban husbandry, we revitalize mutually dependent modes of being. The entanglement allows for moments of enlivenment in a time of atomizing individuation. We are in this together. Through our embedded practice we try to get a sense of the city’s ontology - how the post-sustainable city is constituted and can, or can’t, be reconstituted.

Currently, 'can't'’ is in the lead, gothifying our practice. Drawing on strategies traditionally associated with the double-roled artist, we find ourselves simultaneously planting trees as well as branching out into survivalist prepping. An entrepreneurial doomsday cult for hire, toiling in the ruins of humanism.

Oslo Apiary & Aviary (a play of words on "the birds and the bees") has existed since 2013 when it evolved from Marius Presterud (b. 1980) and Mikkel Dagestad´s (b. 1990) shared interest in work æsthetics and being immersed in the systems of exchange that make up every-day city life.

Our studio is located in an abandoned ventilation-room the top of Kunstnernes Hus, down-town Oslo, while our original farm from 2012 has been assimilated into the city development project Losæter, by invitation of Futurefarmers (SF, USA). In 2015, one of our pollination-stations served the installation ‘City Meadow’ (Transformer#5) at ROM for Kunst og Arkitektur. In June 2016, we expanded to the rooftop of Henie Onstad Artcenter, Bærum, and Gallery F15, Moss. In April 2017, we began growing a forest from foraged seeds, on the roof of Kunsternes Hus, Oslo, for Oslo Open, as well as initiated a Nordic collaboration with Iceland and Sweden (Northern Bumbling - Multi-species living in the North). In 2018 we focused our attention on our plastic eating night butterfly breeding program. Currently, we look towards working in the overlap between art, doomsday prepping and the topic of multi-species ‘mourning’.

In 2015-2016, Oslo Apiary & Aviary were part financed with support of The Art Council of Norway and the charity bank, Cultura.
In 2017, we were part financed with support of the The Art Council of Norway , the Nordic Culture Fund and Office of Contemporary Art.
In 2018, we were part financed with support of The Norwegain Sculptors Association.
In 2019, we were part financed with support of The Art Council of Norway through their trial project grant Art and Climate Crisis.
In 2019, we were part financed with support of The Norwegian Association for Arts & Crafts.

Oslo Apiary & Aviary work in accordance to the principles for mental and public health professionals who are at the forefront of and interested in strengthening communities’ responses to acute events and confronting gradual changes in the climate, as drawn up in the American Psychology Association’s report MENTAL HEALTH AND OUR CHANGING CLIMATE: IMPACTS, IMPLICATIONS, AND GUIDANCE (2017)
