LANDSLIDE
A landslide is the movement of rock, debris, or earth down a slope. They result from the failure of the materials which make up the hill slope and are driven by the force of gravity. Landslides are known also as landslips, slumps, or slope failure.
The movement of landslide material can vary from abrupt collapses to slow gradual slides and at rates that range from almost undetectable to extremely rapid. Sudden and rapid events are the most dangerous because of a lack of warning and the speed at which material can travel down the slope as well as the force of its resulting impact. Extremely slow landslides might move only millimeters or centimeters a year and can be active over many years. Although this type of landslide is not a threat to people it can cause considerable damage to property.
WHAT CAUSES LANDSLIDES?
Landslides can be triggered by natural causes or by human activity,
Natural causes include:
elevation of pore water pressure by saturation of slope material from either intense or prolonged rainfall and seepage
vibrations caused by earthquakes
undercutting of cliffs and banks by waves or river erosion
volcanic eruptions.
Human causes include:
removal of vegetation
interference with, or changes to, natural drainage
leaking pipes such as water and sewer reticulation
modification of slopes by the construction of roads, railways, buildings, etc
overloading slopes
mining and quarrying activities
vibrations from heavy traffic, blasting, etc
excavation or displacement of rocks.
LANDSLIDE TYPES
Landslides or slope movements can be classified in many ways. There are many attributes used as criteria for identification and classification including:
Rate of movement: This ranges from very slow creep (millimeters/year) to extremely rapid (meters/second).
Type of material: Landslides are composed of bedrock, unconsolidated sediment, and/or organic debris.
Nature of movement: The moving debris can slide, slump, flow or fall.
Common landslide types are:
Slide: movement parallel to planes of weakness and occasionally parallel to slope.
Creep: gradual movement of slope materials
Slump: complex movement of materials on a slope; includes rotational slump.
Topple: the end-over-end motion of rock down a slope.
Fall: material free falls.
Flow: viscous to the fluid-like motion of debris.
Torrent: a sporadic and sudden channelized discharge of water and debris
