‘I Fly, I Sink, I Fly’ by Kate MacKenze
Oil on Canvas, framed in white
Size: 123 x 103cm
Beautiful and evocative, this latest piece by Kate has us pondering the effect of nature on our thoughts and emotions. A wonderfully composed piece - there is more than meets the eye, as the impression of flight counters that of being submerged and begs the question about the implications of either.

Our ‘Masterpiece’ Series continues with this delightful piece by Whangarei artist - Sandra Whyte.
‘Huddle & Cuddle’
Oil on stretch mounted linen
Size: 90 x 45cm, beautifully framed
Artist Story behind this piece:
Oh dear, ‘Huddle and Cuddle’ everyone!
‘Pippy Long Stocking’ has fallen from blocks, now she lays with ‘Goldilocks’.
A Plunket book and gummy beads, a silver baby cup. A future artist’s baby pic with wand there for good luck.
‘Lewis the Lion’ looks all forlorn, but ‘Sparkle Bunny’ saves the day and soon he’s on his way.
Mane blows as ‘Stormy’ shows, where ‘Schubert’ takes the reins. For help flows through his veins.
‘Jersey Bear’ in fear and despair, as ‘Dumbo’ plants sucky kiss upon his cheek and ‘Father Ted’ in his tie, who couldn’t tell a lie, holds ‘Baby Bunny’ in search of honey.
A world apart is ‘Brillo Bear’, and ‘Pink the Pig’ sits tall. They see the sky is blue and so does ‘Birdie’ too. A plan is hatched, the door unlatched, the sky is all so new.
In the middle, the ‘Circus Horse’ eyes a ‘Golden Apple’. The time is right, he sees tonight and goes in for a bite!
A tender touch from ‘Tony Sloth’, a loving smile of grief and gratitude, his arm extends for ‘Care Bear’, whose world descends, as does her ear.
Above this mayhem, ‘Rabbit’ sits. He’s made of rags and riches to come, but now he feels a little glum.
This piece would make a wonderful heirloom piece for nursery or gift for baby shower. Absolutely beautiful.
Our ‘Masterpiece’ series has brought these two stunning pieces by Whangarei glass artist Keith Grinter.
Hand painted blown glass vase in vibrant colour or classic monotone, incredible technique within these large glass works.

If we don’t listen, we can’t change, so…..

Next in our ‘Masterpiece’ series, this incredible piece by local Howick artist - Greta Umbers.
‘When it Floods, Where Will We Be Carried?’
Medium: Graphite and Newspaper Transfer on Paper
Size: 132 x 97cm - Framed
When it Floods, Where Will We Be Carried? examines the soft border between devastation and repair. And poses the question, how do we continue to rebuild on what we know to be unstable ground?
Finalist - Parkin Prize - 2023
Greta manipulates this medium with supreme skill, beautiful softness in details emerging from darkness - there is a sense of childhood nostalgia but also of despair. Yes there is sadness, but such beauty in the sadness.
View in the gallery to truly appreciate the wonder of this work.

‘Trophic Cascade Moonjar’
By Rebekah Hall
Artist Statement:
I n t o the W i l d - do you use resources from your surroundings in your art? I try to because I feel the work then has a direct connection to this place.
Schist is a very soft rock that is easily worn away & crushed, natural slips occur & this is what I collect from my favourite cove.
Material is dried & then crushed in a pestle & mortar, time consuming but oddly satisfying…or I’m I slightly weird?…possibly!
Large bits of plant material are removed but don’t stress about this it will burn out in the firings.
You can pound to a fine powder or leave slightly lumpy.
has a beautiful piece of my work using this technique, you can see it in the centre of the image or of course visit it at the gallery.
Just loving this gorgeous new small piece by Dalene Meiring.

‘Rocks’ - ceramics installation
By Mollie Schollum
ARTIST STATEMENT
“An installation of ceramic rocks, a collection of memories, places visited but sometimes not quite remembered. Only with the creation of their copy, recalling the environment where they belonged and the motivation for selecting that one rock to take home. A question now as I am older, is should I have ever taken the real rocks, their perfect place is where they were found.”

Greta Umbers is a local artist that takes the ‘sketch’ concept to intriguing new levels with her beautiful graphite on board pastoral scenes. Though this medium is sometimes viewed as ‘cold’, Greta expertly manipulates in layers to produce a soft, almost mesmeric atmosphere. The audience is invited to stand within the scene, to experience time and place.
Of these pieces Greta says:
“Environment and weather patterns often emerge in my drawings, a result of being both inspired by and connected to the land. They are simultaneously traditional landscapes, and pyschogeographical reflections from the rural areas that feed our cities.
The cow lying down awaiting the arrival of the rain, the drying streambed and trough are static moments of relative calm between drought and flood. They are moments of reflection and anticipation - hope for renewal, or dread of catastrophe.
These sketches were experimental studies for a new body of work I am currently developing which is similar in form, however differs in content from these familiar pastoral scenes.
The new challenges and unpredictable outcomes I encountered when shifting from working on paper to gessoed board made these studies not only necessary and informative but is also an integral step in the development of my artistic process.”

Whangarei based artist Sandra Whyte has brought beautiful new works and personal sketches to the gallery for ‘sketchbook’ - a group exhibition.
There is such a beautiful ‘sketcherly’ softness to these oil on linen paintings of local NZ birds that speaks to Sandra’s love of nature.
Recent loss and deep sadness have brought Sandra back to sketching in order to reconnect with her art. Of these pieces she says:
Sometimes a painting just seems to land on the canvas, as if it were painted through me rather than by me. Then there’s the rest. The ones I push and pull around the surface until a half decent job is done or I finally crack the secret ingredient.
Sketching has become my new best friend. I sit with my charcoals and imagine the possibilities. A dusting here for atmosphere, the swipe of the eraser where refinement is due and a heavy hand for values of dark, like a stamp of approval unable to remove.
Problems are solved and mind put to rest, now just for colour - it passes the test.
