Milia are harmless white bumps formed directly from entrapped keratin. These small pearl-like cysts are usually found on the faces of infants but also very common on adults. They can go away on their own but in adults can often take several months, sometimes years. If you have some of these little unsightly bumps and you’d like them gone.. keep reading!

In older children and adults, milia are typically associated with some type of damage to the skin causing a dysfunction with skin cells and keratin.
This can include: blistering injuries, prolonged impaired barrier (lack of oil), burns, long-term sun damage, long-term use of steroid creams, poor skincare habits.
Milia can also develop if the skin loses its natural ability to exfoliate. This can happen as a result of aging and the skin’s ability to desquamate slows down.

Because milia form under a thin layer of skin, (and not in a pore) there is no opening in the skin to gently squeeze the plug out. Never try to pop or otherwise extract milia yourself. It won’t work without an opening and attempts to create one can cause infection, serious skin damage and permanent scarring.

What can you do to help? Come in and see one of our senior skin therapists. We offer extractions as facial add-on service (we do not offer these as a stand alone service) This is because there is a need to prepare the skin prior to reduce risk of trauma to the surrounding skin and for a nice straightforward removal. We would suggest adding this on to a Double Facial (Peel + Healite) or a Corrective Skin Peel or a Hydrafacial.
Active cosmeceutical homecare is recommended to correct dysfunctions and keep Milia at bay.
