STOCKROOM HIGHLIGHTS | Each week we share an available work handpicked by one of our team with personal insights into why this work has resonated with them.

"I love the raw energy of this work, the intensity with which McCahon has laid down the colour. The sky feels alive, shifting under our gaze. This watercolour was painted the year McCahon finished his teaching role at Elam School of Art and was able to fully dedicate himself to his practice, with a studio at Muriwai. It is one of 10 watercolours McCahon painted with this title that were exhibited at Peter McLeavey Gallery and there is a feeling of joyous freedom throughout the series, along with a deep engagement with place, as is evident throughout much of McCahon’s work." - Hannah Valentine

Both of our galleries will be closed tomorrow (Friday 28 June), but we will be back open on Saturday from 10-4pm.

STOCKROOM HIGHLIGHTS | Each week we share an available work handpicked by one of our team with personal insights into why this work has resonated with them.

"There is something utterly mesmerising about Reuben Paterson’s works. Despite them being created on a flat canvas surface, the glitter brings the works to life - they dance and dazzle as you walk past. This 2023 work Feels Like, I'm Inside of Flowers feels quintessentially Reuben; the use of traditional kōwhaiwhai patterning has been a mainstay of his practice for over 25 years and one that he revisits consistently. There is something about the glitter that brings back childhood memories of gluesticks and pottles of glitter going everywhere in the house, but unlike my 6-year-old self, Reuben has mastered the medium and taken it to the next level. I am always excited to see what he will create next." - Cass Pettifer

Introducing our new series Stockroom Highlights. Each week we will share an available work handpicked by one of our team with personal insights into why this work has resonated with them.

First up is Gallery Director, John Gow.

"I have been looking at this Walters and thinking what a gem it is. The subtleties of the colour shift in the black, the composition with the Koru at the base and the soft toned line across the top. I was in Gordon’s studio years ago watching him play with cardboard cutouts of a koru painting he was composing. Moving the elements around until he found the desired composition for the work he had in mind. I can just see him doing this for ‘Untitled’ 1974. He certainly attained a beautiful balance for this small but perfectly formed Koru painting."

This 2003 painting by Jacqueline Fahey has recently come in for sale at Gow Langsford from a private collection.

Born in Timaru in 1929, Jacqueline Fahey is one of New Zealand’s most iconic living artists. She is known for her distinctive style of painting, which incorporates narratives of domesticity and suburbia, interpersonal relationships, and critiques of restrictive gender roles.

Tragedy outside the Dairy II is a work from 2003. Portraying a suburban setting, the painting shows the titular tragedy in play. A figure lies prone and bleeding in front of a pedestrian crossing outside a dairy (not shown but signalled by the presence of quintessentially Kiwi streetside signs advertising Coca Cola, Anchor milk and Tip Top ice cream). A small crowd of onlookers are gathered around the fallen figure. Background houses, along with several cars, a child, and a pair of dogs complete the scene.

Tragedy outside the Dairy II features the approach to figurative painting that the artist has become widely celebrated for. With its broad range of characters in a scene of unfolding action, it creates a sense of life and vitality – even while portraying someone’s untimely demise. Set in a seemingly familiar suburban context, it draws aspects of familiar New Zealand culture into the fold of painting.

Gow Langsford is thrilled to announce we are now representing Berlin-based painter Yafeng Duan.

Born in Hebei in northern China in 1973, Duan has resided in Germany since 2004. She has exhibited extensively in Europe and Asia, showing her work in a broad range of private and public settings. Her first exhibition with Gow Langsford will take place this year at our flagship gallery in Onehunga.

Duan works in abstract painting, combining gestural mark-making with multi-layered paint washes. Her paintings are richly colourful and expressive, drawing on influences from both traditional Chinese ink painting and contemporary Western abstract art. Duan’s father was a notable figure in traditional Chinese ink painting, and she studied this distinguished artform at the Central Academy for Fine Arts in Beijing from 1999 – 2001. After moving to Germany in 2004, she studied painting at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences and then undertook an extended period of study at Bauhaus University Weimar, graduating in 2011.

Contact us to register your interest for Duan's upcoming exhibition.

Included in John P**e's solo exhibition 'Haia' are six large scale works on paper. “The ink drawings were drawn in my hut in Liku,” P**e says. “In these drawings, there are references to the empty hurricane houses built in the 1960s, and references to the church in Liku. The texts and many of the images are sourced from my journals, which I constantly draw and write in.”

View these works at our Onehunga Gallery until 8 June.

Gow Langsford is pleased to present Julian Schnabel’s 'Portrait of José Luis Ferrer' at Aotearoa Art Fair 2024. Monumental in scale, Portrait of José Luis Ferrer demonstrates the technical finesse and artistic vision that has made Schnabel a major figure in American art since the 1980s.

Schnabel created Portrait of José Luis Ferrer in 1997. The work combines oil and enamel paint with acrylic resin. The artist has used detailed paintwork to articulate the figure’s face, while employing gestural mark making to generate the surrounding environment. This approach recurs throughout Schnabel’s substantial body of portraiture, which has been a central aspect of his painting practice throughout his career. His use of scale elevates the subjects of his portraits and invokes a sense of gravitas, as is the case with this painting.

The subject – José Luis Ferrer – is an actor and personal friend of the artist. The sharply defined face of Ferrer sits in powerful contrast to the gestural to the loosely defined background. The painting has been overlayed with resin, which the artist has allowed to run down the canvas, setting up a dynamic friction between painterly control and expressive chaos. Combined with the imposing scale of the work, this epitomises the audacious approach to painting that Schnabel has a reputation for.
In 1998, the artist reproduced this work as a silkscreen print. Released in an edition of 90, the print has proved highly popular, commanding strong prices at leading international auction houses. This fact makes the original painting all the more compelling. Portrait of José Luis Ferrer is a prime example by one of the world’s leading painters of the past 40 years.

View this work at Booth G15, open today until 6pm and tomorrow from 11-5pm.

A new work by Shane Cotton is included in 'This Must Be the Place', our inaugural exhibition at our Onehunga gallery.

Cotton’s work frequently refers to Māori folk art – art that developed post-contact, and incorporated elements from European culture. He has shaped this swathe of visual references and touchstones into a contemporary visual lexicon. In 'Te U Kai Po' (2023-24), the artist presents the viewer with an arrangement of flowers in a vessel. While floral still life has a long tradition in Western painting, Cotton draws in elements of customary Māori motifs to create an artwork distinct to Aotearoa. His palette and paint handling give the work a vibrant, contemporary tone.

Gow Langsford Onehunga is open Thursday-Friday 10-5pm and Saturday 10-4pm; 'This Must Be The Place' closes on Saturday 4 May.
