Francis Ford Coppola's MEGALOPOLIS
Now showing at Academy Cinemas!
From visionary director Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now) comes MEGALOPOLIS - a Roman Epic set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero, the mayor's daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.

🎞️ THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985)
🎬 dir. John Hughes
⏰ Wednesday 2nd October, 6:00pm
What happens when five strangers end up together in Saturday detention? Badass posturing, gleeful misbehaviour, and a potent dose of angst. With this exuberant, disarmingly candid film, writer-director John Hughes established himself as the bard of American youth, vividly and empathetically capturing how teenagers hang out, act up, and goof off.
The next instalment in our retro $5 Wednesday series is this quotable 80s John Hughes cult favourite! With its highly quotable dialogue and star-making performances, this exploration of the trials of adolescence became an era-defining pop-culture phenomenon, one whose influence now spans generations.

A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1974)
dir. John Cassavetes
Tuesday 17th September, 7:30pm
A special 50th anniversary screening to celebrate this groundbreaking Cassavetes classic, and a special tribute to "your favourite actress' favourite actress" Gena Rowlands in her iconic performance in the title role!
This uncompromising portrait of domestic turmoil details the emotional breakdown of a suburban housewife and her family’s struggle to save her from herself. Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk give unforgettably harrowing performances as a married couple deeply in love but unable to express their ardor in terms the other can understand. This landmark American film is perhaps the most beloved work from the extraordinary John Cassavetes.

🎞️ LOGAN'S RUN (1976)
https://www.academycinemas.co.nz/movie/logans-run-1976
In the Year of the City 2274, humans live in a vast, bubbled metropolis, where computerized servo-mechanisms provide all needs so everyone can pursue endless hedonism. Endless, that is, until Lastday, when anyone who's 30 must submit to Carrousel, a soaring, spinning trip to eternity and supposed rebirth.
🎞️ SLEEPER (1973)
https://www.academycinemas.co.nz/movie/sleeper-1973
A humorous foray into the year 2173 when Woody Allen awakens to find the world quite different than when he was cyrogenically frozen. Miles Monroe, a clarinet-playing health food store proprietor, is revived out of cryostasis 200 years into a future world in order to help rebels fight an oppressive government regime.
🎞️ FAHRENHEIT 451 (1966)
https://www.academycinemas.co.nz/movie/fahrenheit-451-1966
Montag, a regimented fireman in charge of burning the forbidden books, meets a revolutionary school teacher who dares to read. Suddenly, he finds himself a hunted fugitive, forced to choose not only between his rebellious mistress and his pleasure-seeking conformist wife, but between personal safety and intellectual freedom.
🎞️ THE TRIAL (1962)
https://www.academycinemas.co.nz/movie/the-trial-1962
A feverishly inspired take on Franz Kafka’s novel, Orson Welles’s THE TRIAL casts Anthony Perkins as the bewildered office drone Josef K., whose arrest for an unspecified crime plunges him into a menacing bureaucratic labyrinth of guilt, corruption, and paranoia. Exiled from Hollywood and creatively unchained, Welles poured his ire at the studio system, the blacklist, and all forms of totalitarian oppression into this cinematic statement—a bold, personal film that he himself considered one of his greatest.

A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1974)

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (1974)
dir. Brian De Palma
https://www.academycinemas.co.nz/movie/phantom-of-the-paradise-1974-50th-anniversary
This inspired rock 'n' roll fusion of Faust and The Phantom of the Opera boasts an Oscar-nominated score by Paul Williams, who also stars as an evil record producer who not only steals the work of composer/performer Winslow Leach (William Finley) but gets him locked up in Sing Sing - and that's not the worst that happens to him along the way. Prodigiously inventive both musically and visually, this is one of De Palm's most entertaining romps, not least because it was so clearly a labour of love.
BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA (1974)
dir. Sam Peckinpah
https://www.academycinemas.co.nz/movie/bring-me-the-head-of-alfredo-garcia-1974-50th-an
Warren Oates plays Bennie, a piano player in a Mexican bar who gets himself involved in the manhunt for Alfredo Garcia, a man with a million-dollar price-tag on his head having impregnated the daughter of crime boss El Jefe (Emilio Fernández). A love story that plays out in a brutal environment, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia may just be Bloody Sam's greatest work, as well as his most autobiographical.

Small-town girl Nomi Malone is determined to make it as feature dancer in the bitch-eat-bitch, sex-soaked world of the Las Vegas showrooms. The reigning queen of Sin City, Cristal Connors, is not going to give up her crown – or man (Kyle MacLachlan) – without a fight.

🎞️ IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (1992) dir. John Carpenter
🎉 30th Anniversary
⏱️ Friday 30th August, 8:30pm
This shocking story is, in the words of its acclaimed director, "horror beyond description"! Sutter Cane is the best-selling author whose newest novel is literally driving readers insane. When he inexplicably vanishes, his publisher (Charlton Heston, SOYLENT GREEN, PLANET OF THE APES) sends special investigator John Trent (Sam Neill, JURASSIC PARK, POSSESSION) to track him down. Drawn to a town that exists only in Cane’s books, Trent crosses the barrier between fact and fiction and enters a terrifying world from which there is no escape!
Brain-bending horror from the mind that created HALLOWEEN, THE FOG and THEY LIVE!
