Rolling into Milestones!
Did you know that rolling is a crucial step in your baby's
development? It strengthens their muscles, improves
coordination, and sets the stage for crawling and
exploring the world around them.
Here are a few top tips for rolling:
💛Aim for rolling both ways; if they've mastered one
side, keep practising the other.
💚If your baby dislikes tummy time, try introducing it
through a gentle roll – they might think they did it
themselves and enjoy it longer.
💛Encourage visual tracking to one side and slightly
back.
💚Many babies initially get their arm stuck – help
them shift their weight to learn how to release it.

Mastitis is horrible!
But rushing to get antibiotics may not be the answer.
If you have a sore, swollen and hot breast using cold compresses, lymphatic massage and anti inflammatories are the first line of defence.
It’s also recommended only to feed your baby as normal, rather than increase feeds or add in pumping, so as not to add more stress to an already inflamed breast.
These steps alone may well be enough to get the mastitis under control and avoid the need for antibiotics.
It’s interesting to know that the use of antibiotics too early will alter the microbiome of the breast and increases the risk of bacterial mastitis. And we all know the risks of over using antibiotics leading to possible resistance at a time our bodies may really need them.
It’s also worth noting that many antibiotics and anti fungal medications may have anti inflammatory properties which may explain the relieve some women experience soon after commencing treatment.
But they won’t deal with the root of the problem…often, issues with milk removal.
So when might antibiotics be indicated?
-you’re not feeling better after 24-48 hours
-if your temperature goes above 38.4c
-you’ve seen active signs of infection like pus
-your breast increases in size, or the sore patch gets bigger
Please check out my previous post about the NICE guidelines for mastitis treatment too.
And if I can help, please get in touch.
Tomorrow is National Safe Sleep Day – Te Rā Mokopuna. Did you know capsules are designed to keep pēpi on the correct angle to breathe safely while they’re in the car? That angle changes when the capsule is removed, making them unsafe for sleep.
If your child has fallen asleep on the journey, don’t leave them in the capsule – transfer them to a safe sleep space when you arrive. On long journeys it’s important to stop at least every 2 hours and take pēpi out of the capsule for a stretch and a wriggle.
If you’re not sure if your capsule, car seat or other child restraint is correctly installed, reach out to your nearest child restraint technician for advice. You can find ours on our website: https://bit.ly/4bGhEB2

Tips to put baby down
Anyone who's been following me for a while will know all about the 4th trimester and the fact that babies prefer to sleep on a human. But sometimes you may need a wee, need to do a few chores or just would prefer not to be touched for 10 mins. But how on earth do you put a baby down so they will stay asleep? Here are some tips:
* Wait until baby's in a deep sleep. Baby's arms will be limp, eyelids still and not flickering, hands relaxed and breathing slowed.
* When placing them down, start by putting them in their side, then gently roll them onto their back. This will help prevent the startle reflex. Also make sure they go in feet first and not head first.
* Feeding to sleep in side-lying position and rolling yourself away after baby has settled can work really well. Baby falls asleep and you don't need to move them, or you may feel safer to slide them into a cosleeper cot than leave them on the bed. Or you can stay and share a nap!
* Keep doing some of your other sleep cues like shhhing, patting humming as you put them down.
* Try to maintain some physical contact for a minute or two after you have placed them down. Maybe lean over and keep cuddling for a bit or leave your hand on their chest so they can feel your presence. Gradually move away.
* If baby is in the sling put them down still in the sling, then work on removing it gently as they settle.
Remember this is not fail safe! Babies are hard-wired to cry if they find themselves on their own. In order to feel safe and secure they need your presence and they far prefer to sleep on your chest where they are safe and warm and right next to their food source. So if you manage a transfer and they stay asleep, this is a bonus! You have ninja skills. And if they wake immediately, don't worry, enjoy the cuddles. Hopefully you got your wee!
