Nothing could have prepared us for just how Amazing Africa Day 2024 was we are still pinching ourselves. A massive shout out to the 5am crew and all the early birds that came and set up for the day.

The Caribbeanz Southern Stars Steelband first came together in 2005. It was the first full steelband in Aotearoa with players from all over the Caribbean and the world playing calypso, reggae, and popular music on the traditional instruments originating from Trinidad and Tobago. The band has performed across Aotearoa and also in Australia. It is always an honour for the band to perform for our African brothers and sisters. Everywhere de band playin, de people smilin!

She's a talented DJ who is passionate about showcasing African music, dance, and culture. This year, she has prepared a fantastic lineup of artists, dance, and musical performances. A joyful and jaw dropping fusion of afro-grooves and jazz that hits you like a burst of sonic sunshine” Phil Jackson, BBC specialist music presenter describing Yaw Asumadu who is a master drummer, composer, African flautist, bass guitarist and xylophone player. In 2018 Ghanaian master musician Yaw Asumadu, moved to NZ and has formed the new band Ozi Ozaa which is a 11 piece band packed full of funk & jazz with sweet highlife and traditional African rhythms with members who have previously played in Kiwi acts such as Batucada Sound Machine, Tahuna Breaks, The Scribes of Ra, Ijebu Pleasure Club Yaw and the band has been packing out performances including recent joyful performances at the Auckland Arts Festival and supporting Mad Professor and many others. 🇬🇭

Meet our lovely ACOFI - African Communities Forum Incorporated president and Africa Day team chairperson Evelyn Park talking about what Africa Day means to her.
Fathe and the Sweetos play deep from the heart, influenced by music that makes you move, including afrobeat, disco, funk and traditional Ethiopian Rhythms. Fathe, the lead vocalist and soul behind the band, is a talented performer and lyricist who, together with the Sweetos, creates an eclectic mix of poetry and sound. With each member bringing their own cultural influence, from Japan to India, Chile and Aotearoa, the band’s songs are a testament to their ability to weave stories into catchy tunes and infectious rhythms, taking audiences on a journey of self-reflection and empowerment.

Born in Enugu, Nigeria, Ch! Nonso is an AfroSoul artist of Igbo descent. Drawing inspiration from sounds that have deep roots in African music traditions, Ch! Nonso’s music journey began as a church choir member and later as a member of a boyband in university. Previously he performed under the alias Nuel Nonso as lead vocalist for ljebu Pleasure Club and has worked with Phodiso, Mazbou Q, New Telepathics and Sola Rosa. Sonically, Ch! Nonso’s sound is influenced by traditional Igbo rhythms such as Amawbia and Mbaise sounds, Highlife, RnB, Afrobeat, Jazz, Soul and artists such as Femi Kuti, Destiny’s Child, Celestine Ukwu, Plantashun Boiz and Stevie Wonder. Zimbabwean born and raised, Thabani Gapara is an Auckland based saxophonist who has been performing around the world in various musical projects for the last 16 years. A graduate of the New Zealand School of Music (B Mus Jazz), Thabani has had the pleasure to play as a member in several musical projects in Zimbabwe, South Africa and New Zealand.
His passion for collaboration has seen him work with a plethora of South African and New Zealand artists including: Batucada Sound Machine, Hipstamatics, Bella Kalolo, Rob Ruha, Lou’ana, Vince Harder, Stan Walker, The Modern Maori Quartet, House of Shem, Three Houses Down and Katchafire to mention but a few.
March 2024, he blessed us with the album In Their Footsteps Vol. 2. All lovers of good music, don’t miss Thabani’s set!
