Talofa lava! Manuia le A*o Faraile (Happy Friday) 🥳
Second to last day for Samoan Language week! It's really been an honour to share with you all the things that are really important to me. As well as some wise proverbs used in the Samoan culture! The theme for this week was based a lot around utilising connections, maintaining knowledge and being prepared.
The Alagaupu (proverb) we have visualised in this picture is:
"O le fogava'a e tasi" - One family or one boat
Fogava'a - refers to the boat deck (this proverb is basically the same as saying "all hands on deck")
O le galulue faatasi e sologa lelei ai mea - working together helps things run smoothly.
Words/phrases for today:
Galuega - work (nga-loo-eh-nga)
Lagolagosua - To support (lah-ngo-lah-ngo-sue-wah)
Malo galue - Great work, good job, well done (mah-law nga-loo-eh)

Talofa lava!
Talosia o loo sologa lelei le tou a*o (I hope your day is going ok/running smoothly)
This years theme is "Fa'aauau le folauga i le va'a o Tautai" (Continue the voyage with competent Wayfinders of the ocean.) For Deborah, she says "this was a reminder to use every tool I have in sustaining our Aganu'u (Culture). Those tools include the poetic language in the Samoan culture. Our proverbs are not just common phrases, but they stem also from stories and experiences. Once created they pass on through generations and generations. This is how our culture continues to thrive. By passing it onto the next gen. The proverbs I have shared this week are some very important words that I have always loved to keep with me always."
Apart of the creative project Deborah and the Digiliah team was to visualise these proverbs.
Here is another beautiful proverb and a quote Deborah has shared with us:
"O lupe sa vaovao'ese'ese o le a toe fuifui fa'atasi" (Pigeons that were separated will come back together)
Even though life takes us in different directions, we will always find our way back to our loved ones.
"Se alofa ua fausia I luga o le Aganu'u" (A love built upon culture) - We all know a good relationship needs a stable foundation or common ground. For Darra and Allen (captured below) their culture was that.
Some everyday phrases/words that fit our theme today -
Ou te alofa ia te oe - I love you (oh-oo teh ah-law-fah ee-ah teh oh-eh)
Aiga - Family (ah-ee-nga)
Uo - Friend (woh)
Once again, Manuia le vaia*o o le gagana Sāmoa. Happy Sāmoan language week!

Talofa lava,
Today Samoa celebrates 60 years of independence. One of the most historic moments for Samoa was the Mau Movement. 'The Mau' was a revolutionary movement for Samoa's independence.
'The Mau' was led by a paramount chief named Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III. This is where the motto "Samoa mo Samoa" (Samoa for Samoans) was created. On December 28 1929 11 peaceful protesters of The Mau were killed and among those was Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III. Rather than seeking vengeance for the blood shed, he left Samoa with these words...
"Samoa filemu pea ma si ou toto ne'i ta'uvalea. A ia aoga lo'u ola mo lenei mea" ( "My blood has been spilt for Samoa. I am proud to give it. Do not dream of avenging it, as it was spilt for peace." )
After 62 years of German and New Zealand colonial rule Samoa finally gained it's political freedom and Apia became a city of celebration in 1962.
To learn more about these historic events for this Island Nation follow the links below:
Gaining independence - https://www.thecoconet.tv/know-your-roots/pacific-history/the-first-independence-day-celebrated-in/
The Mau movement - https://www.thecoconet.tv/know-your-roots/untold-pacific-history/untold-pacific-history-episode-3-samoa-nzs/ )
This movement was not only lead by Samoa's amazing male leaders but was also supported by the women when The Mau members had to flee and hide from New Zealand authorities seeking to punish them. So the picture below was to visualise a very important proverb.
“O le Tama’ita’i e malu ai le Āiga atoa”
“The maiden is the refuge of the entire family”
Here's a phrase you can use: Tatou galulue faatasi (tah-toll nga-loo-loo-eh fah-ah-tah-see) - lets work togeter!

Manuia le Vaia*o o le gagana Sāmoa! Happy Sāmoan language week! Welcome to day 3 of Sāmoan Language week!
Mālō le soifua maua iā te outou uma. (Good on you for living is a literal translation or to say good life to you. This greeting is a formal way to greet someone)
Todays caption that we shared with these photos is a very common proverb/quote used to describe our women. There are many poetic words I'd love to share but I'll save that for later.
However I leave you with this…
“E au le ina’ilau o Tama'ita'i”
This is a proverb that speaks about the power of women and what they can achieve and do, not only as daughters, sisters and mothers but most importantly as leaders within their own communities.
I am a proud Sāmoan Tama'ita'i (Sāmoan woman) living in the Pasefika diaspora.
Each day I am inspired to stick by this proverb because I know that my people are proud of the smallest things anyone in our community do.
Saō saō saō falālelei, le ole lea! Cheeehooo 💚

Yesterday was the official first day of Samoan language week and throughout the week our Customer Service Guru, Deborah will be educating us on the Samoan language and her culture.
This years theme is "Fa'aauau le folauga i le va'a o Tautai" (Continue the voyage with competent Wayfinders of the ocean). This years theme reflects on our journey of revitalising and maintaining Gagana Samoa (Samoan language). It encourages me to remember all the important tools, skills and relationships for my va'a (boat) to adapt to the ocean (life) and its elements of living away from home.
This year my island nation celebrates 60 years of independence. I had the beautiful opportunity of being in a creative project again this year and got to choreograph/dress/direct these pieces. Each day I will share with you all a picture/video and a quote we used to describe these moments.
First up: "E mamae le tava'e i ona fulu a'o le tagata Samoa i lana gagana ma lana aganu'u"
"The tava'e bird finds pride in it's feathers, like a Samoan has for their language and culture"
