International Fraud Awareness Week - Tip #3: Always verify the validity of an invoice before paying it off
Whether you're paying an invoice for business or personal expenses, always ensure that the invoice has been sent to you from the organisation you are dealing with.
Scammers send fake invoices requesting payments for goods or services that you may not have asked for or received. Often, the scammer will use scare tactics to prompt you to immediately pay the invoice. For example they may state that you've missed the due date of the invoice payment or that your credit rating will be affected if you don't pay the invoice urgently as soon as possible.
Remember, requests for sensitive information containing a sense of urgency can often be assumed to be fraudulent so always be sure to verify sensitive information such as bank details and payee/payer information by calling a trusted source at the organisation the invoice was sent from, or if possible, verify the invoice in-person.
International Fraud Awareness Week - Tip #2: Never give your personal information to anyone over the phone.
A common approach now being use by scammers is to use phone scams to manipulate people into disclosing their personal information such as credit card or bank details, home address, email address, and more. Many may also purposely reel you into a conversation that may cause you to unknowingly disclose potential answers to security questions such as your mother's maiden name, your first pets name, etc.
This exposes your personal information and allows them to leverage this to gain access to your finances, steal your identity, gain access to your business network, or use this information for some other reason.
If you are ever in a position where you are asked to give up your personal information over the phone, the best course of action would be to hang up immediately. If you would like to verify the call after this, call the organisation back using a trusted number. Do not call them back on the same number that you received the call from.
International Fraud Awareness Week - Tip #1: Know what happens with your personal information!
Access to your personal information can allow someone to steal your identity for their personal gain. In most cases, people find that their identity has been used for financial gain such as opening bank accounts, applying for credit cards, or even buying goods and services if they have access to your credit card information.
So what can you do about this?
- When sharing your personal information, ensure that the source you are sharing this with is trustworthy and reliable, and that they won't share your information to other sources without your consent.
- Wherever possible, strengthen your privacy settings on social media sites.
- When shopping online, protect your credit card information by ensuring that you are buying from a trustworthy and secure website and are paying through a secure payment portal.
Join us this week for International Fraud Awareness Week and take a stand against fraud!

It is now very common for everyone to turn to the internet to find information, and a lot of the time, what we see or read online is true. Although sometimes, it’s put there on purpose to spread false information.
It can be hard to tell the difference between what’s real and fake so always ask yourself: is what I’m reading clickbait?
Is the source trustworthy?
Are the photos real?
Where can I fact check this info?
You can help others by not sharing fake news and reporting it when you see it.
