An awesome turnout at our Youth Services Staff Sports Day!

This special day was about connecting and networking with other staff and kaimahi who dedicate their time to supporting our younger generations. MUMA was joined on the court today by several rangatahi service providers, mentors, youth councilors, social and community workers, and many more amazing kaimahi. We had so much fun getting to know some of the other service providers in Tāmaki Makaurau and want to give a big shout-out to everyone who came today! Always great to see our teams collaborate to create a strong network of support for our rangatahi. Ka wani kē!

A quote from Hana Te Hemara, 1972. In that same year, she and other members of the Māori activist group Ngā Tamatoa presented the Māori Language Petition to Parliament. Their actions called for the recognition of Te Reo Māori and sparked discussions and changes regarding its inclusion in Aotearoa's education system.

He wahine toa, he wahine rangatira hoki. She was a proud fighter and an advocate for our people. Koinei a Hana Te Hemara.

Our kura, Waatea School opened its doors to their new classrooms on Monday. We are so proud of the hard work and planning that our tumuaki Whaea Zara and the kura staff have put into their new learning space for our tamariki as they are our future leaders - ngā rangatira mō āpōpō.

A lovely send off in Whānau Ora today as we farewelled one of our amazing kaimahi here at MUMA.

Chante Betham (2nd from the right) has been an absolute joy to work with and has definitely left a positive impact on our whānau here. Her brilliant mahi leading one of our newest services, the Social enterprise Pathways scheme, has helped many realise their entrepreneurial potential and success in the business field.

Whaea Chante leaves us to pursue new opportunities where she will no doubt thrive as she did here at the marae. Her bright smile and can-do attitude will be greatly missed at MUMA, but we can’t wait to see her many achievements in the future.

Nei rā te whānau o MUMA e mihi ana!

Tēnei te mihi whakanui ki ngā taiohi, ngā rangatira o āpōpō kua eke panuku ana ki taumata tū atu! A heartfelt congratulations to our incredible youth who graduated today from our He Poutama Rangatahi programme here at Ngā Whare Waatea Marae. It has been an amazing eight weeks working with our fourth cohort of 2024, helping them complete their certificates, build their skills and work experience, and achieve their personal goals to excel in the future.

And a huge thank you to the whānau and rangatahi from Manurewa Marae who came to support and celebrate with us today. No doubt, we had an awesome time celebrating our young ones together and we can't wait to see what they achieve next!

Last week, our marae was visited by the Ministry of Social Development here at Nga Whare Waatea. We were joined by Chief Executive Debbie Power, Deputy Chief Executive Marama Edwards, Regional Commissioner Julia (Jules) Lynch, and Manager of Client Service Operations and Marae Co-location, Haupai Montgomery.

It was a sunny day on site as we checked out the different departments and met with all the kaimahi working hard to deliver our many services and support to our community. Te mīharo e te whānau!

Mōrena e te whānau! Our driving school has had many inquiries regarding the licence courses, thus quickly reaching our maximum intake capacity for this class. As the course is now full, we can no longer enrol more participants for this class.

Don't worry if you missed out on this one! There will be plenty more courses running in the future, and we will announce the next course as it opens up. Kia kaha tātou!

This morning, MUMA had the honour of welcoming leaders and representatives from the Auckland Indian Retail Business community to Waatea. The gathering aimed to discuss solutions and perspectives on crime and offences targeting local businesses. The event commenced with a pōhiri, followed by a hui where ideas were shared on how community providers and leaders can address these concerns to support our whānau and reduce crime in our hāpori.

After the hui, our manuhiri were given a tour of the marae and introduced to the various resources and services MUMA provides to whānau in Tāmaki. Meaningful kōrero was exchanged, and the rest of the evening was spent acknowledging the mahi each rōpu contributes to their local communities.

He mea mīharo te kite i nga rōpu o te hāpori e mahitahi ana mo te painga o te katoa. Na tō raurau, nā tōku raurau ka ora ai te iwi. E mihi ana ki a koutou!

Ko Matariki ahunga nui! Waatea School had a fantastic day in the wharekai celebrating Matariki with our tamariki and whānau! The kids played a big role in this year's celebration, being the chefs behind the savouries, sushi bites, crumble desserts, and fairy bread snacks on the table! And, of course, a big thank you to the whānau who came to support and enjoy the hākari with us today and to the kaiako and kura staff who put the whole event together!

Definitely, a mīharo way to cap off the week before the Matariki public holiday tomorrow. Kia pai nga hararei, ā, whakanuia hoki i a Matariki e te iwi!

Stories of Te Reo 26/06/2024

With Matariki just over the horizon, we take this time to reflect on the past and recognise the journey it has taken us to get where we are now. Acknowledging all the rangatira and people of mana who fought those battles, had those difficult conversations and pushed for our traditions and culture to be seen.

'Stories of Te Reo' is an amazing interactive map that lets you travel through time and space and learn about major milestones and achievements across Aotearoa and the wider world. From the pre-1600s to the 21st century, read about the first Māori place names to be renamed, the musket wars, to the very first published Māori newspaper, Dame Naida Glavish AKA, the 'Kia Ora lady', prominent activists and historical events, and so much more!

Our Reo has come a long, long way, and so have we. He iwi kaha tātou, and we are ! Click on the link and check it out for yourself e te motu.
