Unions Auckland stood in solidarity with the peaceful protests that were held at the Ports of Auckland this afternoon. We must keep mounting pressure on Israel to commit to a permanent ceasefire, and the way that we do this is to put pressure on Israel through the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Find out more here: https://bdsmovement.net/what-is-bds .
Even if you can't come at 1300, please try and come after work! It's important that we show solidarity, and a strong union presence there sends a strong message!

Yesterday afternoon, Chris Hipkins finally called for a ceasefire in Gaza. While the call was welcomed, we know that this announcement was far too late. What we must also acknowledge, is that this call would not have been made if it were not for the organising on the ground by multiple groups, in particular, Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa - PSNA and Palestinian Youth Aotearoa. Tens of thousands of people across the motu organised to call for this change. We can continue to make a difference by organising, and we will win.

Unions Auckland supports the letter from the NZCTU Te Kauae Kaimahi to the Rt Hon Chris Hipkins calling for the following: 'for the New Zealand government to publicly denounce all attacks on civilians, by all parties in the conflict, and to use its full diplomatic weight to continuously call for:
• An immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, and the withdrawal of the Israel Defence Forces from all Palestinian territories.
• An immediate end to the siege of Gaza, and the admission of all necessary humanitarian aid, including water, food, medical equipment, and fuel.
• The protection of all civilians, including the immediate return of all hostages, and the upholding of international law.
• An International Criminal Court investigation into the possible crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes committed by the state of Israel, Hamas, and other parties
to the conflict.
• A solution to the conflict that recognises and enables the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights to self-determination and sovereignty"

To show your solidarity for the people of Palestine in Tāmaki, there is a gathering this Saturday from 1400 at the Band Rotunda, Pukekawa/ Auckland Domain organised by Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa - PSNA to stop the genocide in Gaza.
Unions Auckland stands in solidarity with the people of Palestine, and yesterday's hīkoi in Tāmaki was attended by hundreds of people who feel the exact same way. We are echoing the demands from the Palestinian people and trade unions to call for an end to arming the state of Israel, and for an immediate ceasefire. Make peace, not war.
Would be great to get some union presence along!

Our first stall day at First Thursdays was a great ! We spoke to lots of workers across hospo, health and public service about FPAs, what unions are doing leading into the elections, and what their plans are long term. Also, free hats! System Change Aotearoa organised a powerful hīkoi yesterday, where we demanded that we need to tax the rich.
Trade unions were out in force, as well as Auckland Action Against Poverty, Extinction Rebellion Tāmaki Makaurau , Migrant Workers Association of Aotearoa and Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand. Mahi tika ana!
We deserve world-class, free universal public services. We deserve clean, free , reliable infrastructure and public transport. We must ready ourselves for mahanatanga o te ao. Aotearoa can have all these things, and be proud of what we leave behind for the next generation, if we tax the rich now.
