Speech of ancestors wins Oxford Debate for Jackson Labour MP Willie Jackson has used his speech at the Oxford Union debate to demand the return of seven mokomokai held by the British Museum.
Labour MP Willie Jackson has been invited to debate the moot “British Museums are not Very British” at the Oxford Union on Thursday 23 May. That will make him the first Māori, and only the second New Zealander (after David Lange in 1985), to participate in the Oxford Union.
Willie Jackson's just the man to represent us in the Oxford Union debate OPINION: It’s a great honour and I can't think of anyone better to do it.
A new book published for ANZAC day is edited by the museum's associate curator of war history, Gail Romano, an historian interested in the often-overlooked fringe experiences of war.
She points out that when writing to family members about their experiences they often didn't want to talk about the horrors of war, so they described their surroundings instead. For many of the classically educated men, they understood that they were on a site of layers and layers of history; of Greek heroes, biblical descriptions and roman ruins.
They also recorded the beautiful sunsets, unusual bugs and birds, and fields of flowers they were surrounded by.
Lieutenant-Colonel Dr Percival Fenwick, a doctor, wrote about the "dreadful time" of treating the wounded, but he also recorded the banality of the men's daily reality and the wonderful sunrises, the fleet of warships "like toys on the water", and said "like a beautiful white bird, the hospital ship glittered pure white, as if she was a dove with folded wings, waiting as a symbol of peace".
The museum's archaeology collection manager, Deirdre Harrison, contributed to the book's section on the landscape of Gallipoli. The French and British soldiers who landed further south dug trenches in what turned out to be an archaeological site at Cape Helles - much of what they found is now on display at the Louvre in Paris. She has included one of the objects that made it home to New Zealand, and is now held by the museum: a little metal amulet. It was found by a kiwi soldier on rest and recreation, in Troy. The tiny figure of what looks like a lion or a dog is not on display, but kept in the museum's vaults.
On the fringes of the Gallipoli battlefield When our Gallipoli soldiers landed at the historically significant site they occasionally paused to admire the sunsets, birds and flowers; and to souvenir treasures

After Pokaiwhenua (the mere pounamu) was taken from Auckland Museum in March 2019, TV One reporter Yvonne Tahana went along to a Te Karere interview with Ngarino Ellis whose book A Whakapapa of Tradition: 100 years of Ngāti Porou carving featured Pokaiwhenua. Here Tahana describes the three-year-long journey that saw the mere pounamu safely back home in the most "Māori way possible".

Call for proposals: Samoa House Library Research Residency Programme 2023
Samoa House Library (SHL) is now accepting proposals from arts & arts-related practitioners for our Research Residency Programme 2023. There are 2 residencies available each including a stipend of $5,000, open to individuals, groups or collectives.
SHL’s research residencies offer practitioners from art or art-related fields the opportunity to focus on their research practices in ways that are less outcome oriented. To encourage research without the pressure of project deadlines. They see research in an expansive sense, which could include anything from conversational to action research, project development, material explorations, scholarship and more. During the research residency recipients should engage with the library and work with its resources and may contribute to its programming or organisation.
SHL is interested in supporting significant, urgent, and underrepresented areas of research; collectively oriented or situated projects; archival interventions and projects relevant to the context of SHL (e.g. relating to a history of place in Samoa House or Karangahape, to the collection, to library/archival studies, institutional critique, etc).
