Stoked to be working with G & T Productions on their season of Jersey Boys, which opened on Saturday at the Civic Theatre. In a few weeks we’ll be heading to Wellington’s Opera House to continue this great show!
Glad to be helping out at The Court Theatre getting “Jersey Boys” up and going, it’s been a hell of a ride in the last 2 days!
It almost feels too good to be true - we're opening tonight! 🎉
This musical has been in the works at The Court for over a year, with a team of almost 100 people bringing this sensational show to life.
In a time when most theatres around the globe are closed, we are so grateful and excited to be staging this fabulous production thanks to our talented cast and crew!
Chookas to this fabulous team - from all of us here at The Court, we can't wait to welcome you back to the theatre for this exceptional musical. ✨

A star studded musical theatre concert is about to embark on a six week national tour; The Shows Must Go On opened for Christchurch audiences at the Isaac Theatre Royal last night. Here’s what Backstage Christchurch reviewer Sophie Ricketts thought of the performance: “This is a show which is worthy of being on any of the world’s great stages, how lucky we are that it is here on OUR stages.”

THE SHOWS MUST GO ON

We’ve made it to level one. We’ve earned a night out. What could be better than a seat in the Isaac Theatre Royal hearing songs from all our favourite shows? Producers Glen Ruske and Dave Spark knew how to serve up just what the doctor ordered in creating this jaw-dropping concert production with musical theatre heavyweights Stephen Robertson and Richard Marrett at the helm.
Act one started with a hiss and roar, taking off like a rocket and introducing us to each of the six sensational performers in a quick fire medley of classic songs from very successful Broadway shows. The energy was high, the gowns were gorgeous, and we could all tell we were in for a “best of the best” experience. Verity Burgess, Emily Burns, Akina Edmonds, Jack Fraser, Paul Ross and Hayden Tee were a force to be reckoned with.
The Disney medley was candy-coated fun, but almost left my head spinning at the fast cuts and transitions between each song. I was sad “Be Our Guest” wasn’t performed in its entirety as it is one of my favourite numbers from a Disney show, no time to dwell however as we continued to move quickly through the hits and through the years. The show features works by a staggering 26 musical theatre composers, and another five popular music composers who’ve had their works transitioned to the stage. I loved the variety of Act One, appreciating the history on display from 1927 (Showboat) to 2017 (The Greatest Showman). Act Two was 50% Andrew Lloyd Webber so if you’re worried you won’t recognise any of the songs you needn’t fear; heavy hitters Schonberg and Boublil (Les Miserables) were also in the mix.
Stand out moments from the show, for me, were undoubtedly Hayden singing “Proud Of Your Boy” from ALADDIN, Emily’s gut wrenching delivery on “The Winner Takes It All” from MAMMA MIA, and Akina blowing the socks off everyone present with the show-stopping finale to Act One: “I Know Where I’ve Been” from HAIRSPRAY.
Hayden Tee’s magnificent voice filled the Isaac Theatre Royal from top to toe during his breathtaking ballads. His vocal range is matched superbly by his sense of wit and comedic timing; you can easily understand why he is in demand on Broadway and the West End. Seeing him sing “The Smell Of Rebellion” as Trunchbull from MATILDA was like witnessing a Masterclass in integrated character performance. Seriously, he could sing the alphabet and I’d want to buy a ticket.
My companion and I had the extreme pleasure of being seated next to what can only be described as the “Jack Fraser Appreciation Fan Zone” and it really exemplified how much he is adored here in the city he calls home. My only regret of the night is that two of the songs he sings are segued so quickly into other numbers that it robbed him of some very well deserved applause. Don’t worry, the Fan Zone made sure he felt the love at the curtain call. We are so lucky in Christchurch to be blessed with regular opportunities to hear his gorgeous voice.
It is worth noting that despite the fact I am not a fan of the musical, Emily Burns sang so beautifully I was even able to enjoy a song from CATS. After several years away performing on cruise ships having her back on our stage was like putting on a favourite shoe: a perfect fit.
Although this was my first time watching Verity, Paul and Akina perform I can wholeheartedly say I hope I get the pleasure again very soon. Each of the performers in this show are more than capable of holding the crowd's attention in a solo concert all their own; the real fireworks come from the moments they get to share the stage together.
The exceptional technical elements of this show must also be praised. The dynamic lighting design and use of digital projection provided us with so much to look at this never felt like a static concert. The visual elements created a sense of story behind the songs and made the space come alive. The same must be said for the dazzling array of glitter, gowns and gorgeous hair. Each number had such a fresh look, there must have been a 200 metre clothes rack backstage! It was a treat to see the performers looking so glamorous in addition to looking so happy.
After months of not being able to attend events en masse, the audience rose to their feet after the final number to show their adoration and appreciation for the sensational performance. Being at this show, in this beautiful theatre, surrounded by so many in our community who love this music as much as I do felt like someone had thrown us a party! My sincere thank you to The Touring Company; what you’ve put together is creating a shining light on the horizon of what has otherwise been a rather bleak year.
The performers in this show might have the accolades of overseas audiences to entice you into buying a ticket, but we don’t need to pay tribute to other countries when it comes to applauding Kiwi success. This is a show which is worthy of being on any of the great world stages, how lucky we are that it is here on OUR stages. If you live outside of Christchurch, consider this your warning to get your tickets booked for when it hits a city near you. And if you live in Christchurch and don’t think you can make it tonight or tomorrow I highly suggest making the drive to Ashburton for the performance on Tuesday night. It’s worth it!
