This afternoon we had three amazing speakers who shares with us their experiences on mental health 🫶🏽🫶🏽
First up we had Ciaran Fox who specialises in mental health promotion strategies. He discussed ideas around re framing and de stigmatising mental health. He described the Te Whare Tapa Whā model and the different domains (aspects of life) that cohesively work together to make up our Hauora. He signified the importance of understanding ways in which you can help yourself through implementing the five ways to wellbeing.
Next we had Manisha Morar an advisor at Mental Health NZ (Nōku Te Au). She shared with us the effects of distress of peoples lives honing in on effects that ethnic disparities such as discrimination have on individuals. She also discussed the social determinants of health and the conscious decisions we make each day and how this is effected by where we “work and play” and in turn how this takes shape due to policy implementations in the workplace and society. The Nōku Te Au foundation has many platforms available for those who may be struggling with mental health.
Lastly, we had Sophie Judson, a senior solicitor at Anthony Harper, she is also a founding member of Women in Law from her time at UC. Sophie took a different approach sharing her experience and of mental health and stress aspects working in a law firm. She shared with us some invaluable tips for when we enter the workplace. She said “be proud of what you know and be honest about what you don’t know” and how important it is to build relationships of trust in your team, to foster a positive environment and protect your mental health in such a high pressure job. She also touches on the push these days for firms to implement wellbeing policies. This includes things like a buddy system and incentivising employees to do things for their mental health.
Thank you to all our speakers, we are so lucky to hear even a small portion of your knowledge on these issues 🩷🧡
