Using Kawakawa for cancer
Is there space for Natural treatments along with conventional treatments to teat cancer? In my opinion yes on all levels. I would never proclaim one treatment is a cure all, but using the two together can work in harmony.
As I work my way through my various treatments for my uterine cancer I am using Kawakawa for a multitude of uses.
To find out how read our article https://hippy.nz/using-kawakawa-for-cancer/
I am a knitter, having self taught over 20 years ago. I have often knitted gloves and hats etc. So knowing I was in need of a hat to keep me warm through this winter as I underwent my various cancer treatments I sought a hat that would cover my head with style. The Riyan Clocheβ Designed by Heidi May of The Velvet Acorn appealed to me https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/161029131/knitting-pattern-the-riyan-cloche. Here is my version, a hat that has gained many compliments.

We are working hard to bring to you the recipes of the products we were selling, as well as many more. I recently created a very effective baking soda free deodorant, as affective as the deodorants you can buy, but the benefit is apart from being all natural, you can create your own scent using essential oils. It is brilliant on sensitive skin. I also will be sharing my room and linen spray recipe, I have made a lavender version which I spray on my pillow an hour before bedtime, and I sleep like a baby. And very effective in the toilet following a mans visit. That and our Laundry soap, our Dish wash soap, so many beautiful products. These will be presented in PDF format, instant download, here is an example.

I have just been diagnosed with endometrial cancer, having experienced symptoms for a few weeks. So before I start treatment I thought I had better get in contact. The Barefoot Hippy is still going ahead, it will be a little later getting the website sorted and content uploaded as I get my mad house sorted before I commence treatment.
I plan on getting some lovely photos taken in the next week, while I am flat out trying to pull the gardens into order, prioritising what needs to get done, and what can wait till a later date.
I have been through cancer ten years ago, it was breast cancer, and was discovered then that I have the BRCA1 gene, it is determined to keep giving me a reminder that life is a precious gift. I will face this journey again using both conventional and complimentary treatments side by side. My Kawakawa will be very beneficial in the weeks and months to come. I will be creating a shampoo bar to trial, all going well in a few weeks time, along with a lotion bar, and more. Watch this space. Thank you to those who are following, I will see what I can get up and running before life becomes more insane.

Why DIY natural skincare?
Because it is fun, and because it saves a massive amount of money.
For example a well known face oil, the "Holy Grail" of skincare, sells for over $130 for 100ml. The cost to make almost the same and the same amount yourself (not including postage for the ingredients or the bottle which can be purchased from Arthur Holmes) under $20. Included is my recipe.
Method:
Weigh out your ingredients (Salter precision scales are a bit of an investment but come with a 15 year guarantee and promise more accuracy, particularly when dealing with very small weights. Otherwise a less expensive option are mini scales)
Stir until everything is evenly blended (a mini silicone spatula is helpful for this but you can use a spoon)
Pour into bottles and you're done!
5ml and 20ml dropper bottles are great or you could use a 10ml roll on bottle so you can pop it in your bag and always have it on hand.

Today was dish wash soap making day. A beautiful fresh smelling soap that is far more powerful than anything we have bought from the supermarket. The main ingredient is coconut. The total cost to manufacture is $2.20 per 100 grams, the price includes shipping for the coconut oil which we purchase from the manufacturer. If I was to buy a coconut based dish soap from a leading supermarket I would have to pay $8.99. As I make my soap on trays, then all I need to do is use my food processor to make it into a powder, using between 1 - 1/2 teaspoons per wash load. No grating, no other products needed to make my dish wash. This is another thing I am looking froward to sharing our recipe.
Today is laundry powder making day, yesterday I made the soap, spreading it on silicone trays. It worked a treat simplifying the process (prior to that I made it in blocks then grated which was tedious).
I calculated the cost per load, given my washing machine is a top loader (I use it with a cold wash), for all ingredients. My costing factors in shipping the ingredients as well. Lavender is $1.05 per load, and Eucalyptus is $0.85 cents per load. The recipe for my laundry powder I will share with you at a later date, so watch this space. I can assure you it is all natural, super effective, can be used in top loaders and front loaders, super kind to the environment, and only took approximately one hour total to make. Ready to use within two days.
CLOSING DOWN
It's Time To Say Goodbye, but not farewell. We are sorry to announce that we are having to close our business Hippy Soap Co on Tuesday 5th December. Unfortunately due to the ever increasing costs of materials, and some personal health problems, we have decided we cannot continue, so it's time to CLOSE DOWN.
It was not an easy decision, as you can imagine, but we really haven't had much choice.
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported us on our journey.
π We have some great gift ideas available on our website, limited quantities available so grab them while stocks last.
β° Website will close & we'll stop taking orders at 5pm Tuesday 5th of December. Orders will be processed and sent within 2-3 days.
THE FUTURE OF WWW.HIPPY.NZ
The websites new name will be The Barefoot Hippy, where the website will be a personal platform. Our biggest sellers have been our Kawakawa products. On the website I will be sharing my knowledge, and selling for a small cost ebooks (pdf format) with my formulas, recipes, trade secrets, my suppliers, the lot. This way you can make your own salves and soaps, the secret to growing Kawakawa in containers (as I continue to do) etc.
I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, where I have joints constantly dislocating or semi-dislocating, and now have a lot of arthritis, this year it was discovered severely throughout my spine. When I started the business I was still able to stand for long periods at a time, but I now require the use of a walking stick, where there are many days I can barely walk. It is because of this I have, along with the constant price increases of essentials oils etc, had to make the hard decision to close. But we won't be gone.
I will be focusing on propagating my Kawakawa plants, which I will also be selling locally. I promise to not let you down, knowing there are many of you who rely on these products. I still want to share something I love, but in a greater way, with knowledge, knowledge is power. What you do with all I share is up to you, if you want to create a business selling it, that is fine. But I know there are many of you who simply will enjoy making something to help your child, because that is how it all started for myself.

Our soaps are still full of the great oils they have had from the start, but we have now included Lemon and Mango Butter. Here is why ....
Lemon is a botanical ingredient derived from the fruit of the lemon tree (Citrus x limon) and used for its antioxidant and conditioning properties.
It cleanses the skin, helping control oil production and unclogging pores, very beneficial in helping you combat acne. Lemon will also give your skin a dose of Vitamin C to help improve skin tone and provide antioxidant properties to help reduce oxidative stress. Finally, it will help revive the skin and add to the skin's natural radiance.
Mango butter is extracted from the seed of the mango fruit. It has a subtle scent and a lightweight, silky smooth, but incredibly rich and nourishing texture.
Mango butter is absolutely incredible in moisturising the skin. It also strengthens the skinβs natural protective barrier, which helps your skin retain moisture, prevents damage, and drying out. It encourages the skin to produce new, healthy skin cells, improves the skinβs texture and elasticity. It is suitable for all skin types and can help you treat many skin problems. It is beneficial for sensitive skin, Eczema and Psoriasis, where dry, itchy, and inflamed skin can be a challenge to treat.

Change is sometimes really good.
Sadly there has been a break between supplies of some of our soaps. I am guilty. My health took a down turn, and then the deteriation and loss of a loved one. Prior to this, I geeky me, have been researching. I wanted to make soap that was really good. Yes I hear you say our Kawakawa Soap is really good, but I wanted better. So in my down time I set to to achieve just that. I have created a luxurious natural soap that is super cleansing, is very moisturising, where it calms the skin.
Hard work pays off, and my dears what you see here is the result of my obsessiveness.
A soap you will love to use.

Why we love to grow our own Kawakawa plants. We take little, only what we require. Our carbon footprint is very low, just out the back door. It is pure, it is organic, it is full of so much goodness. PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT Kawakawa Salve
Kawakawa, with its heart-shaped leaves, is one of the plants we grow and use for many of our products. It is a plant that we respect and honour. The leaves contain myristicin, which is mildly antiseptic and has pain numbing properties. In traditional Maori medicine (RongoΔ) it was used externally to treat boils, eczema and rheumatism. Full of antibacterial qualities Kawakawa is a true gift from Mother nature. It is aptly known as βthe pharmacy of the forestβ with its sacred curative and protective uses.
Topically Kawakawa helps with inflammation, infections, wounds and irritation on the skin. Our Kawakawa salve is brilliant for eczema, psoriasis lesions, rashes, cracked and dry skin, minor cuts and abrasions, bruises, sunburn and burns, insect bites and stings, nappy rash and cradle cap, aching joints and muscles.
Our products are priced low to be affordable.
Gentle, absorbing, effective.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT Sore Joint Salve
As we age certain joint pains start niggling, be it from excessive use of a joint, a condition like Ehlers Danlos syndrome, or age related osteoarthritis. For myself I am blessed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, my joints slip in and out easily, creating wear and tear on my joints. Pain is the norm. Now in my fifties I have moderate arthritis throughout my back, it is also in my knees, hips, and shoulders among other joints. A long time ago I decided I was not keen to use pain killers any more than absolutely necessary. I looked at alternative treatments to ease my pain. Some years ago I started growing my own plants, instead of relying on other sources, I grow organic Kawakawa, Comfrey and Arnica. With these plants I macerate in the softest of oils that are lightweight and absorb easily, this enables the skin to take up the benefits of the plants without leaving a greasy residue. Our Sore Joint Salve is one of our products I use daily among others. It is safe to use, it is gentle, yet affective.
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS:
Comfrey leaf (knitbone) is well known for wound healing, particularly broken bones, torn muscles, sprains and aches, reduces pain.
Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) has anti-inflammatory, and pain numbing properties.
Calendula has anti-inflammatory properties, reduces tissue scarring and internal damage.
Arnica soothes muscle aches, reduces inflammation, and heals wounds, sprains and bruises.

The art of never giving up.
The old adage of never give up, try, try again is so true in the art of soap making. Over the last month I have been working away at one such adaption, trialling new ingredients, to bring forth a better product, not that our soaps aren't good. But there is nothing wrong on trialling to the point of excellence. In the coming weeks we will be offering just that, better products, yet still caring for your skin like no other. This trial batch is doing just that, pushing science, a new unique soap. It is being Hippy, to be unique, unlike no other. We do not conform, we just offer a better natural version. We are so excited.
Like many we fight the ever increasing cost increases, so we now offer a more cost affordable option, naked soaps. These are lovingly wrapped in tissue and twine for their journey to you. We want to still keep going, no matter what, because you, our customers, matter to us.
Watch this space.

Behind Hippy Soap Co is myself, Angel, with a little assistance from my three adult children. We all have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a complex condition involving joint dislocations, chronic fatigue, allergies, among other symptoms. My darlings are also on the autism spectrum. We are each unique. After suffering from eczema for many years, we had finally found a cure, my handcrafted soap.
Starting Hippy Soap Co was an initiative that I wanted to share. There are many soaps out there, but my love of science and herbalism I felt could bring forth my own touch, not just make soap, but soaps that are well suited for those who have skin issues like ourselves. I love gardening, and am very fortunate to be living in a great home where I can follow that dream. So to grow organically and create from that has brought forth a whole new concept, one I love to do.
Running Hippy Soap Co we were doing well but as time went on my health starting failing me, both mentally and physically. A month ago it was discovered I had an under-active thyroid, the cause. Now that I am being treated for it has enabled me to face life head on again.
In the following months we will have available quite a few new products, all natural. But as low price as possible. 'Life isn't about waiting for the winds to change, it's learning to adjust your sails.' So we are doing just that, adjusting our sails. Watch this space.
