Alto Café

Today we visited Alto Café at 32 Mailer Street, Mornington. The café is situated in the middle of the Mornington shopping area between the Mornington Health Centre and Countdown Mornington.

When you walk into the café you will see a beautifully setup cabinet with a good selection of in-house made food, from club sandwiches, giant sausage rolls, cheese rolls to all sorts of sweet treats.

The café is quite large with a good amount of seating in two areas, there is a big glass set of windows so you can sit and watch the world rushing by while you sip your cup of tea or latte.

This café has a brunch menu and dinner menu with comprehensive array of dishes, so I suggest you look at their website for more information.

Today Steph and I ordered a sausage roll ($10.00) club sandwich ($5.50) bowl of fries ($8.00) and a ginger slice ($6.50), along with our order I had a flat white coffee ($4.80), and Steph had a milkshake ($6.00)

The sausage roll had a beautiful taste, this was not the average sausage roll, it was massive and worth every cent. I personally would recommend this roll as one of the best I have tasted in a long time.

The club sandwich was filled with ham, tomato, relish, mayonnaise and other salads. Steph said it was gorgeously put together.
The bowl of fries was presented in a good size dish along with two sauces, one being tomato and the other being an aioli and cheese dipping sauce, the chips where crispy and light and aioli and cheese sauce was very delicious and very morish.

The ginger slice was substantial in taste which is good as no one wants a weak tasting ginger slice, the slice had crystallized ginger on top and was very easy to eat.

Stephs milkshake was full of flavor but could have done with a bit of ice cream to make it a little thicker in texture,
My coffee was made to very high standard and pleasing to the palate.

We highly recommend “Alto Café” give it try and discover another great taste of Dunedin.

Stay safe and have a great Christmas

Café Aroma.

We had time on our hands while we waited for new tyres on our car, we decided to walk along King Edward Street and find a café.

We came across this little café called “Café Aroma” with a full food cabinet which is rare at 3pm as most cafés are winding down or closing at this time.

As you walk in you have seating for about fifteen to twenty people, the cabinet is full of beautiful fresh-looking foods, from club sandwiches to sweet delights.

We were greeted with a smile and asked what we would like, I ordered my usual order of flat white coffee and Steph ordered a cold drink from the fridge. For a quick snack I ordered a filled bagel which was offered either warmed or served chilled, I chose chilled, it tasted delightful, and it was light to eat, some bagels can be tough if served cold. Steph ordered a chicken filled wrap served chilled, she said it was filled nicely with chicken and salad and easy to eat.

The café was reasonably priced and we will be happy to go again.
The tables were comfortably set out with a long-cushioned bench seat along the wall and chairs at every table. You could say a bit cosy but were happy with only a few people in the café.

I would recommend trying out this café, I think you will find it a little treasure.

Stay safe and remember “Food is good”

Artisan Pantry and Café

Hi everyone, I hope you are all keeping safe and warm on this wet Dunedin day.

Today we visited Artisan Pantry and Café at 616 Kaikorai Valley
Road, this is located at the Burnside end of Kaikorai Valley.

This almost hidden café on the left-hand side of Kaikorai Vally Road driving toward Couplands Bakery is a little gem. There is parking on the roadside and a small car park just inside the driveway. Outside there is a nice sitting area with picnic tables so you can enjoy your lunch on a sunny Dunedin day.

When you walk in through glass doors you are greeted with a couple of shelves of sauces, pickles and relishes including pasta and frozen meals.

To the right-hand side of the shop is the café with a cabinet full of delights from filled scones, sandwiches, cheese rolls, peppermint slices, lemon tarts, lolly cake and other slices, this also includes gluten free options. The options for refreshments include coffee, tea, and cold drinks.

I ordered three cheese rolls and a flat white coffee. The cheese rolls were nice and filled the empty space but could have done with onion powder to enhance the flavour. The coffee was perfect and was delivered to the table. Steph ordered a filled scone with fried egg, salami, spinach, and homemade t tomato sauce and mayonnaise, Steph also ordered a cinnamon scroll which lived up to its name, so full of flavour and yummy. Steph had a bottled orange and mango juice.

The staff member was polite and engaging, she welcomed you in and also thanked you as you left. This was lovely manners and good hospitality.

Th price of each item was good with a below average for cost, such as the cheese rolls which were only $2 each, instead of $6 to $8 at other cafes, the filled scone was only $8, the slices were on average $4.50. this price range is excellent in the café world as the average for slices is $7 to $8 each at other cafes.

We will be back to enjoy their delights and beautiful beverages

Stay safe and keep warm, summer is not far away.

Cheers from Dunedin Foodie, Chris D

Hi everyone,
We decided to try out Columbus Coffee which is a café located in Mitre 10 Mega South Dunedin. Mitre 10 contracts out their café facilities so what you end up with is a well-run café with trained and qualified staff. The big dark green building around the corner should follow suit as food is not made on site and the coffee at that place is nasty and is made by an unqualified person who doesn’t smile and is not polite.
Looking at the Columbus café we noticed a very clean and tidy sitting area which looks like it may seat up to a hundred people and still leaving plenty of room for people to sit comfortably without being squashed.
The staff members were very busy but did make the effort to say “hi” and they did this with a smile. In the cabinet there was an excellent range of delicious looking dishes including sweets like custard squares, brownie other slices.
You can see through into the kitchen, it was clean looking and you could see the chef working alongside with other staff.
A staff member took our order and we sat down at our chosen table, the café was very busy for 2pm so is a very popular place for lunch. Our order arrived in minutes and delivered with a smile. Steph ordered a chicken and corn roll which came with a light salad, Steph also ordered chocolate brownie with yogurt on the side, her drink was an apple orange and mango cold drink. I ordered cheese rolls with extra butter on the side, a custard square with cream on the side. My d**k was a beautifully made flat white coffee. The whole meal was outstanding and highly recommended, I would eat here again.
The price for our combined lunch came to $47.60, this was a full lunch for two and not just a coffee and a muffin. The prices were again on par with other cafés.
Please feel free to add your own reviews.
Stay safe and be happy.

Royal Albatross Centre Café

Today we visited the Royal Albatross Centre Café at Taiaroa Heads on the Otago Peninsula, it’s about 30km from Dunedin City. Inside the centre you will find gift shop, albatross information and tour, Disappearing Gun Information and tour along with spectacular views from the café of albatross flying overhead.
The café has plenty of seating in a well-lit room with natural light coming from the wall of windows, the centre has light music playing in the background and a very pleasant atmosphere.
The food on the menu was very good in variety including soups, cheese rolls, hot chips, and sandwiches, there far too much to mention them all plus they also have a vegan option on the board. Of course on offer coffee, tea, milkshakes and other hot and cold drinks.

Today I bought the soup of the day which was tomato which came with garlic bread, the soup was thick with chunks of tomato in it. Steph ordered a chicken pie which was made in house, the pastry was beautiful with crispy flaky pastry, and in the pie was big chucks of tender chicken and sweet potato. Steph also ordered a desert which was a caramelised waffle with two scoops of vanilla ice-cream long with a good dash of berry sauce, this was exceptional. For my refreshment I had a flat-white coffee and Steph ordered a strawberry milkshake. All this was only $36.00, very reasonable for what we ordered.

The staff where very friendly and welcoming and engaged in conversation, our visit was very enjoyable and seeing albatross flying overhead made it even more pleasing.

With the Otago Peninsula road improvements on the main road the trip is less of chore and more of a enjoyable drive.

Hi everyone on this wonderful autumn day
Today we visited Glenfalloch Café Restaurant and Function Centre at 430 Portobello Road.

This place has been around since 1871 and is still going today, beautiful gardens and outstanding restaurant building, the only thing that I was disappointed with was it’s not really a café as they do not offer café food, this is more of a restaurant and offer menu food which is cooked by a Chef. They do offer coffee and other beverages along with cold drink from a fridge.

I ordered a flat white coffee which was made to perfection and it was obvious it was made by trained barista. Steph bought a cold raspberry and lemonade bottle from the fridge.

The food we ordered was one chocolate brownie and a bowl of chips from the menu. The brownie was gluten free and delicious. The chips were skin on homemade style with flaky salt. The chips are the best we have had in a very long time and I would even say the most superlative chips ever, cooked to perfection but one must not forget that you are paying restaurant prices.

The cost of our visit was $23.50 which is a bit higher than average but well worth it.

I can see why people visit this beautiful place with its outdoor seating, beautiful indoor setting and atmosphere, outstanding gardens and beautiful sounds of birds while you eat your meal just sipping down the perfect coffee or tea.

When visiting you will find the staff are very friendly and will receive you with a smile. After eating your meal you can walk it off by walking around the gardens.

I would visit here again though next time I will allow more time to enjoy the gardens and take in the views.

Stay safe
Chris

Hi everyone, we are now in autumn but the heat is still here so get out there and enjoy it while you can.

Today we visited the Dougnbin Bakery Café and Restaurant on the corner of Oxford Street and King Edward Street. Lots of parking is available both in Oxford and King Edward.

When you walk in the café there is a large display case at the front along with a couple of tables for quick sit down and a fairly large restaurant section to the side down the back of the building. It is beautifully decorated throughout with art works on the walls, the lighting is subtle and pleasing.

There is menus on the wall to complement the items in the cabinets, the selection of food is good along with coffee, tea and excellent selection of cold drinks.

Today I chose a steak and cheese pie which looked in-house baked and tasted absolutely wonderful with good size pieces of steak, I also chose a custard square which meet my expectations.

Steph ordered a cheese-knot which was a really good size and filled with good selection of salad inside, she enjoyed every bit of it. Steph also ordered a ginger square which was consumed in a timely manner.

We both ordered beverages, I had a flat white coffee which was made by the in-house barista and was made to a high standard. Steph ordered a milkshake with ice-cream added. Steph said she enjoyed every bit of it.

The prices were extremely good for a café, the price is below the average and should draw in customers for just that. The food is presented well and of quality, the drinks would meet even the most fussy of customers. I would recommend the Doughbin Bakery Café and Restaurant

Thank you for reading and stay safe.

Hi everyone, I hope you all are enjoying the last of the summer
This time we visited Noosh Eatery at the Forbury Corner end of Hillside Road and on corner of Surrey Street.
This is a new Café which has been only open for a couple of months but still seems to have a good flow of customers coming and going.
When we walked into the café we were greeted by a staff member with a smile and a simple welcome which was happily received. There is plenty of seating outside with some in the sun and some under a gazebo, also there is a few tables inside the café building.
There are clear cabinets with a beautiful selection of goods on offer including hot and cold dishes plus sweets such as cheese cakes and alike. And of course coffee, tea and cold drinks were also on offer.
We ordered our meals and sat at an indoor table, I received my coffee within a couple of minutes and our meals within a couple more. I ordered a cheese roll which was cooked enough for the cheese to run out the sides, I did ask for more butter for the cheese roll and was given a pcu/sachet of butter without hesitation, I also ordered a pastry horn that was bacon and potato stuffed, this was served cold and was nice but I would have preferred it heated. Steph ordered a chicken and fresh salad Panini of which you could order hot or cold, Steph said it was wonderful with plenty of chicken in it.
The price for our meals and drinks came to about $33.00 which is within our expected range for café food.
It was a good experience and a pleasure to try out a new café.
Thank you for taking time to read this review

The Topiary Café

This week we visited the Topiary Cafe inside Wal’s Plant land 109 Bush Road, Mosgiel.
Nice little drive from Dunedin to the edge of Mosgiel, when you get to 109 Bush Road you drive down a long driveway and almost up to the door of Wal’s Plant land. You walk through the gift shop and down a tunnel house to the entrance of the café.
Looking around the café you will find plenty of options for seating which includes different size tables, couches and an outdoor deck which looks out over a pond and mini golf course. During the holidays and some weekends there is a ride-on model railway
We were greeted with a smile by a waitress and offered a menu, we chose to order at the counter and then we sat outside on the deck. Within minutes our drinks were delivered to our table and a few minutes later our meal was delivered and all with a smile.
I ordered a cheese roll (which was big) and a coffee, Steph ordered a bacon and egg pie which was made in a Texas sized muffin pan, she also ordered a cold drink from the fridge (smoothie)
The cheese roll was made in house and beautifully presented and was very delicious, it was missing the onion taste of a traditional cheese rolls but it was still nice and very filling.
The bacon and egg pie was also made in house and served with a lovely chutney and very beautiful looking, very filling and worth the trip to Wal’s
The total cost for the food and drinks came to $22.00 which is a reasonable price for café food.
We will be visiting here again plus you get to walk around the gardens and also shop for plants, the wildlife is also friendly here too.

Hi everyone, summer is finally here just when most people have to go back to work.

This week we took a trip to the St Clair Esplanade and visited a little place called the Zoo Café in the Hotel St Clair building.

It’s a little café with a good view of St Clair Beach. The café has plenty of seating and good access to each table. They have an excellent menu with a reasonable price range.

The food looked beautiful and was tempting but I settled with a cheese scone and a large flat white coffee, the cheese scone was mouth-watering (with real butter) lots of cheese throughout the scone, you really couldn’t ask for more and it was filling. Steph ordered an apricot chicken Panini which was lightly toasted and evenly warmed throughout, lots of chicken and dried apricots with a beautiful sauce she said it was delicious.

The staff were very friendly and accommodating (gave me extra butter when requested) I would visit here again as this was a very enjoyable experience on what was a very bust day for us.

Please remember this is what we were served at the time, your experience may differ.

Take care and enjoy

Roslyn Takeaways
Hi to all of our fish and chip food lovers out there
This week we visited Roslyn Takeaways in the Roslyn Village
Our review menu was 1 fish, 1 onion sausage and a scoop of chips, the other meal was sweet and sour pork on fried rice.

First thing I always look for is a friendly attitude, when I walk into any shop you expect to be greeted in a friendly manner with at least a “Hi” or how’s it going” or similar. You do not expect arrogance or disrespect such as we did in the Roslyn Takeaway. We walked up to the counter and apart from no smile we were greeted with “yes” in low tone, we made our order, no thank you or anything else and just to top it off another member of staff walked in almost pushing passed me and giving a real antisocial glare almost angry at me for being there.

The food itself was not bad, the chips were commercial crinkle cut, a bit on the under cooked side, lightly salted, crispy on the edges, I would give a 6/10, the fish which was Hoki was very nice with a moist steamed texture, the batter was crispy, I would give this a 8/10. The onion sausage was on the smaller size but did taste of onion and did have a crispy batter but lacked size so I would give it a 6/10

Value for money at $8.30 “No” the food was average and the staff attitude was poor so just from the attitude I would not visit here again.

The sweet and sour pork on fired rice was again average, there was not many bits of pork, the pork itself was tender for the most part, the batter was crispy on some parts, the pieces of pork were way too big (not bite size) I would give the battered pork 7/10. The rice was fried for an extra $2, it was barely fried and lacked taste, and we had to add salt which is very unusual for this dish 3/10. The only positive thing was the sauce that was supplied in a separate container, it was very hot and very tasty I would rate this at 8/10

Value for money $14 “No” this was meant to be a full size meal but there was only a small amount of pork, under fired rice and lacking salt.

We will not be visiting here again.
Please remember this is our experience and was reviewed with what we are served at the time, your experience may differ
Stay safe and be happy.

Hi everyone, today we visited a café in Green Island, called “the Food Room & Co” This is located at the south end of Green Island near the Long Ping takeaway.
Medium sized café with plenty of inside seating and a few outside seating at the back of the café, very friendly staff and willing to suggest options, they had a good selection of food, both hot and cold.
We were served with a smile and served at our outside table which was a beautiful setting on a deck at the back of the café overlooking a small stream with ducks and geese, the outside setting is covered with clearlight roof so even if it did rain you could still enjoy the outside experience. It was a very quiet and peaceful setting the only sound that we could hear was the running water in the stream.
We bought one custard square, one caramel slice and one coffee, this was at a mid-price range of $15.50 for all three items, the portions were of a very good size and very filling.
We will be visiting here again.

Hi everyone, today we visited a café in Outram, called “The Wobbly Goat Café”
The café that we visited in the township of Outran was “The Wobbly Goat” it’s a nice little café on the main road through Outram with mostly outside seating. They have a small selection of goods on offer from homemade sausage rolls, sandwiches, salads, smoothies, coffee and so on but we visited the Wobbley Goat for their famous “custard Square” but unfortunately for me this is only available on the weekends.
We were served with smile and a friendly greeting, we made our order and it was served to our table. The main road is a bit noisy at times with farm traffic like stock trucks and tractors passing by in the short time we were there but the atmosphere great with a real positive vibe.
We ordered a spinach and feta pinwheel and mix berry smoothie each
The price is the midrange of café prices, the pinwheel scone and a smoothie came to $12 x 2 which we did expect.
We enjoyed the experience and would visit here again.

Hi everyone, I hope you are all geared up for Christmas. We have decided to keep going with the “fish n chip” reviews until we have completed those last few shops but also we are going to try other places and see what they have on offer, so it will not be so much a review but a look at what might excite members of this page, it could be cakes from a café or a coffee in the middle nowhere. Feel free to put up anything up that takes your interest in the food world and have fun doing it.
I will try my best to get all of my past reviews loaded on this page, you never know there may be something that you guys have missed reading.
Cheers,
Chris
