Marcela Giesche (dance artist & researcher based in Berlin, Germany), is this year’s Caroline Plummer Fellow in community dance at the University of Otago, is reaching out to the University and broader communities with interest for collaboration and exchange.
One of the main aims of her work here during the fellowship is to draw attention to dance and movement practices in relationship and connection to diverse disciplines of academic study and related research.
During the months of May – August she will be available to visit departments/classes and offer free workshops in various movement methods as well as dialogue and exchange with staff and students on how embodied perception/intelligence, movement practices, and choreographic/improvised structures can relate and connect to their specific topics of study and interest. Each workshop or masterclass will be structured individually to connect with the research topics of the group. All workshops are accessible to persons of all abilities and backgrounds.
Additionally to the outreach, she will be guiding a diverse group of 24 community members and students into a performance – a moving selfportrait of Ōtepoti – Dunedin, during the first week of September. Performance Dates as 7 / 8th of September at the New Athenaeum Theater. The underlying theme for the performance is that “all movement is dance” – we just have to frame it.
More information about her project in general as well as the performance can be found here: www.selfportait24.com
For more information on her artistic work: www.marcelagiesche.com
Marcela would be glad to be contacted by anyone who would be interested in connecting or booking a workshop or masterclass. Email: [email protected]

You are invited to participate in a classical music recording session at studio
Illustration of the recording studio: Ayşe Ilgın Sözen Ekici
Are you interested in having your classical music performance recorded, mixed, and filmed by professionals? We are currently seeking performers and ensembles for a project that offers a production package for musicians interested in recording sessions.
• You choose your classical repertoire. We help you produce it.
• You experience a recording session with professional recording engineers. It is a great opportunity to learn working in a studio where we demystify the so-called “blackbox” process of recording.
• Some classical music performers or music graduates choose the career path of recording engineers. A few examples include Audio Engineering Society Student Recording Competition Silver Winner Mie Hirschfield and Grammy-nominated Audio Engineer Nick Sullivan.
• Studio experience is valuable for classical music performers, many of whom find themselves working in studios later in their careers. For example, concert pianist Danae Dörken shares her insights from studio recording sessions, and concert pianist Nahre Sol explains recording in a professional recording studio or at her home studio.
• By the end of the sessions, you will receive high-quality audio files.
• A video of the recording sessions synced with the final audio will be provided. This video can be distributed publicly or used for demo reels or auditions at your discretion – it is up to you.
The study focuses on the classical music performance of soloists and ensembles willing to attend recording sessions in North Dunedin. The time commitment involved is about 4 to 6 hours per recording session.
For more information contact Emre Ekici, School of Performing Arts, University of Otago ([email protected]) or Lecturer Dr Michael Holland, School of Performing Arts, University of Otago ([email protected]).
