Premier Hockey League 13/09/2024

Premier Hockey League (PHL)
Set to start on the 2nd November:

Hockey New Zealand (HNZ) is gearing up to launch the inaugural Premier Hockey League (PHL), Aotearoa’s new elite domestic hockey competition.

Starting on the 2nd November running through December 7th December, this elite-level competition will showcase top-tier talent across both men’s and women’s teams across four franchises over seven weekends.

COACH Announcement
We are now excited the unveil the coaches for the four PHL franchises:
Falcons, Mavericks, Tridents, and Alpiners.
These coaches have been selected for their extensive experience, exceptional skills, and their ability to inspire and lead their teams to success. Their appointment is a crucial step in shaping the league’s inaugural season and ensuring a high standard of competition. They will play a crucial role in shaping the teams and the league.

"The Premier Hockey League will be a crucial component in our high- performance environment, particularly for coaching development. We've always had a wealth of coaching talent across New Zealand, but the PHL provides the challenging environment needed to push our coaches to new heights. Just as players need tough competition to grow, our coaches benefit from the intense, elite level contests the PHL will offer. This league fills a vital gap in our system, giving our top coaches, alongside players
and officials, a sustained period of high performance competition.
Watching our coaches match wits, adapt their tactics, and bring out the best in their teams under pressure is not just exciting it will elevate the standard of hockey coaching across the country. We are also very pleased to see female head coaches appointed to these roles from within the New Zealand coaching system”.

Over the coming days we will be featuring our Secondary school teams that went away to tournament.

To Start with is Campion College, who went to the Coed Secondary Schools compeititon in Whakatane which was the Woolaston Trophy Tournament (2-6 September 2024) .

Please see their results, report and photos of their time away.

The team played six matches in total, showing determination and resilience throughout the competition.

Game 1. Campion vs Kerikeri 1 - 0 (Campion Win)

Campion opened the tournament with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kerikeri. The team's defense was solid, and they capitalized on a key scoring opportunity to secure the win. Hamish Swann scored a field goal in the 4th quarter in the 51st minute. However, the win came at a cost, as they lost their female captain and central defender, Catherine Moles, early in the match due to an ACL knee injury.

Game 2. Campion vs Raphael House Rudolf Steiner School (Defending Champions) 1 - 2 (Campion Loss)

Despite a strong start, with Hamish Swann scoring in the first two minutes, Campion fell short in their second match against Raphael House. They fought hard but were unable to recover from the goals conceded in the 22nd and 45th minutes, resulting in a narrow 2-1 loss. Campion also defended 12 penalty corners during the match.

Game 3. Campion vs Okaihau 4 - 1 (Campion Win)

Campion bounced back in their third match with a convincing 4-1 victory against Okaihau. The team showcased impressive offensive play, scoring multiple goals and maintaining control throughout the game. Goals were scored by Cameron Hodgetts (1), Bella Swann (1), and Hamish Swann (2).

Campion finished second in Pool A.

Game 4. Campion vs Huanui College (Quarterfinal)
0 - 3 Campion Loss)

Campion faced Huanui College in the quarterfinals but struggled to find their rhythm, leading to a 3-0 defeat. With the score at 1-0 in the 55th minute, goalie Nelis Du Preez (nicknamed "The Great Wall of SA") was pulled to allow an extra striker, but the tactic backfired as Huanui scored in the 58th and 60th minutes. Coach King “If you lose by one or three you still lose, we had to go for it and try to force a shootout in this knock stage of the tournament.” Despite the loss, the team fought hard, and Ezra Graham, an injury replacement, performed exceptionally well in a wide defender role.

Game 5. Campion vs Glenfield College 1 - 0 (Campion Win)
(5th–8th Place Playoff)

In the playoff for 5th–8th place, Campion secured a 1-0 win against Glenfield College. Their defense held strong throughout the match, and a late goal by Hamish Swann in the 60th minute ensured victory.

Game 6. Campion vs Te Paepae o Aotea 0 - 6 (Campion Loss)
(5th/6th Place Playoff)

Campion's final match of the tournament was against Te Paepae o Aotea for the 5th/6th place playoff. The team struggled to contain their opponents after losing Hamish Swann to a foot injury in the 9th minute, resulting in a heavy 6-0 defeat. However, no goals were conceded in the final quarter, a testament to Campion's perseverance.

Overall Performance:
Campion College displayed resilience and teamwork throughout the tournament, winning three out of six matches. Despite some tough losses, the players gave their best efforts, ending the tournament in 6th place. Raphael House went on to win the final 3-2 over Taieri College, securing back-to-back championships. Huanui College placed 3rd.
