Do you know where your employees are at?? As we embark on the last months of the year many people start to think about what the year has been and what is ahead. A number of people genuinely feeling stuck and not knowing how to move. And to be fair the narrative across media has been fairly doom and gloom, let alone the election rollercoaster we’ve endured and the sustained hope for the economy to settle again all feeds into the mindset of our employees. Move being the ultimate word, movement is progress but becoming stagnant, stuck, not being heard, not having skills to make a plan or knowing where to start is hard to work through… there are so many facts that set the position of where your employees are starting at that they will be looking to you for that objective need for coaching, guidance or direction to keep moving. Perhaps its time to engage in a future based discussion and develop some short and long term plans.

The countdown… its on… the election is literally on our doorstep, its time to move through the frustration and get the gameplan ready! I have heard a number of organisations choosing to wait on recruitment, pay reviews, wellbeing initiatives or even managing poor performance because of the election. My challenge on this is the unintended consequences to your culture and performance of the business. I like to think ahead and have a gameplan of a number of approaches and ways to go about taking the right action at the right time. Restructuring is on the mind for many employers at the moment. This is a incredibly tough space to navigate not only what does that mean for the business and our employees but what message does it send to our customers, when is the right time and are the forecasts accurate. Often when speaking with business owners/people leaders in this space they are contemplating what is the right move which is quickly followed by concern to even start a process and what might be the first step. The sick leave useage that’s breaking businesses back… for many it’s been a winter loaded with illness rolling through one household member to another with no let up before another comes through or employees just not recovering well before being struck down again. It’s exhausting! For individuals but also businesses. Now while I get it and understand when you’re sick it’s the pits but of late I’ve had a number of small businesses contacting me unsure about what can you make of these situations. I am a big advocate for thinking outside the square, finding a middle ground and shaping solutions that work. Do you need support with winter ills!

Anti bullying is every day not just something talked about on one ear marked day right?

Last week I wore a pink shirt to a meeting with senior leaders, as everyone mingled before the meeting started a chap turned to me and said "you know its not anti bullying day aye?". A little taken back, I said "Isn't anti bullying everyday?" to which he gave a perplexed look and I continued with " the positive about wearing pink is that its prompted this discussion and making a point that anti bullying is everyday, especially as a leader. It should be something that is freely talked about and called out". It was a interesting situation that left me thinking there is a whole lot more we can do as leaders to do better when it comes to bullying, but first get the basics right.

How is flexibility sitting in your business?? A number of organisations are finding themselves at a crossroads with working in a more flexible way versus considering flexible work arrangements. Huh?? Yep these are two different things. Covid pushed organisations to explore different ways of working that are typically underpinned by values and principles that are expected to be met. Whereas there is a piece of legislation that drives the way in which an organisation needs to consider a individuals request for a flexible working arrangement that comes with set expectations that need to be well considered before a response is given. Well-being is something I’m always conscious of when it comes to working in HR and across a variety of people matters. Fair to say it’s concerns me deeply when one or neither party sees the importance of factoring this into planning and discussions. Looking ahead we are about to say see you later to day light saving, there’s a sense of fatigue or low energy hanging around like fog for a number of people and the media continues shovelling negativity across every news feed… I often think if I was a people leader right now what would I being doing or planning for to move the well-being dial and care for my people knowing we’ve got a challenge ahead… what are our future workforce needs and how do we do better in our changing environments. How has the start business in 2023 gone for you?? The last few weeks have sparked some interesting reflections and discussions, a lot of these feel like a hangover from the end of 2022... Especially in the people world. I'm hearing frustration, tiredness, low resilience and lack of energy resulting in not dealing with poor behaviours and performance, less than ideal recruitment decisions needing to be undone, knee jerk org changes, creeping up of sick leave usage and the growing of annual leave accruals. All in all snippets of moments that need some help to get back on track or resolution to move forward, and really get over that hangover! Leave Liability... This hits different right… What is your team or businesses current annual leave liability as you slide into the holiday period??

There are a number of different ways to manage annual leave in the immediate short term or longer term depending on the scale and impact to your team and business.

Lets not forget here employers have a duty of care alongside the Holidays Act that sets out that the purpose of Annual Leave is to enable employees to have the opportunity to two consecutive weeks for rest and relaxation each year. Performance Management.... Over the last few weeks I have heard similar stories about poor performance, attitude and behaviour's where these have essentially been ‘weighed up' against the perceived risk of losing the individual and choosing to not performance manage because they are technically good at their job, they have all the institutional knowledge, they are our best seller, they have a high client group and in this market they could go anywhere leaving us high and dry…. BUT the real risk here is losing the people that genuinely care, who are turning up for the business to do a good job for the business and its customers, the people who don’t feel heard and see leaving as the final option because poor performance and behaviours haven’t been managed. These matters shouldn’t be put off, addressing them in a timely manner with a fair considered approach could make all the difference for the entire team. Lets talk, nothing is insurmountable.

I’m well down the track of my solo venture of Daly HR Consulting. It’s been most things I was looking for with flexibility, variety and networking. What wasn’t so expected was the isolation and quiet days, plus getting comfortable with promoting myself. Of late I’ve had the chance to get good perspective and make some plans to keep moving forward.
