It's important to remember that training and career pathways can start at any age.

In some regions, Workwise employment consultants are working closely with young people who are thinking about their future.

A couple of weeks ago, Workwise Wellington team members went along to the Pasifika Leadership Symposium in Porirua, to be part of a careers expo for Pasifika youth.

"We were able to teach our Pasifika community about who we are and the mahi we do supporting people in the community. We made some good connections with other external agencies in the greater Wellington region and we were able to do employer approaches as well!"

One of the highlights of IPS employment support is forming international connections with like-minded people and organisations and learning from each other.

This week, our chief executive Warren Elwin and general manager Tyron Pini have been doing just that - visiting local providers of employment support services such as Thresholds (see photo) in Chicago, USA. They have also been meeting with IPS Learning Community leaders from the USA, UK, Australia and Europe, making connections and formulating actions.

Their busy schedule was nicely rounded off by attending the 2024 IPS International Learning Community Annual Meeting, hosted by the IPS Employment Center.

One step closer to increased peer support at MHAIDS | MHAIDS 16/11/2023

We're proud to be part of a project team with Te Whatu Ora ‐ Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley's Health Pasifika in Porirua where our employment consultant Victor is supporting with ideas on how to integrate Peer Support workers in a Pasifika service.

Workwise employment consultants work closely with community mental health teams, collaborating together to support people on their employment journeys - but this work isn't always visible from the outside.

Integrating into a clinical setting forges many strong bonds and trusting relationships, and there is so much we can learn from this evidence-based model!

Thanks for visiting us in Tāmaki Makaurau, James Whiting and Tania Sacco from Orygen (Australia)!

It's always a pleasure to meet like-minded people, promoting work as a health intervention.

It was great for leaders from Orygenand Workwise to come together earlier this week to talk about what we do as organisations in the IPS employment space - sharing the similarities, differences, opportunities and challenges.

Building our relationship and connection in this area will create fresh possibilities for our people - and the people we support.

Today is and we acknowledge the importance of having a place to call 'home'. Housing is a human right and so too, is employment.

We believe that people shouldn’t have to put their employment dreams on hold because of homelessness.

In collaboration with The People's Project NZ, Workwise has been on the journey of integrating employment support with Housing First services for many years now. When we work together, amazing things can happen for people.

It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Richie Poulton.

"Richie's support, advice and encouragement for employment support within mental health services has been a treasure for many years. He was so generous and we will miss him." - Warren Elwin, chief executive of Workwise

He pānui aituā! Our hearts are heavy with the passing of Professor Richie Poulton CNZM FRSNZ, a treasured friend, celebrated researcher and dedicated Wise Group trustee. Richie brought a brilliant focus on using evidence, research and data to his governance work, alongside a lifelong dedication to caring for people.
He will be missed by many, and we are grateful that during the past months Wise Group trustees and colleagues have been able to visit and connect with him at his home in Dunedin. Most of all, Richie will be missed by his family, and our thoughts and hearts are with his wife Dr Sandhya Ramrakha and daughter Priyanka. Thank you, Richie, for your tireless dedication and incredible contribution to the Wise Group, and the world we live in. You will be missed, and always remembered.

E te rangatira, e te hoa, Richie, e moe, okioki. Kua tutuki te wāhanga ki a koe. Waiho mai ō mahi nui, ō mahi huhua hei ōhākī mōu. Ko koe ia ka whakawhiti atu hei whetū tārake i te rangi tiaho mai ai ki runga ki a mātou kua mahue mokemoke mai nei ki muri. Haere, haere, haere atu rā.

A reminder to Connect / Me Whakawhanaunga...

This is close to our heart here at Workwise, as we create work connections for the people we support. Connections are formed between a person, their family, friends, employers, colleagues, peers and importantly, with their employment consultant / kairapu tūranga mahi.

"Connection is the ngākau/heart of our wellbeing. It weaves us together, making us feel seen, heard, and understood." To find out more and to learn about the Five Ways to Wellbeing during Mental Health Awareness Week (happening this week), click here: www.mhaw.nz

Welcome all things that have grown
Welcome all things that are good
May they be plentiful and abundant

This is an example of a kaikōhau (expression of hope) that we wanted to share with you during Te Wiki o te reo Māori.

Kaikōhau means to express your hopes and desires.

When you say it, you are welcoming all things that are good and wishing for them to be plentiful in times to come. This can be the food laid out in front of you, it can be your mahi (work), health, whānau and friends, and many other things in your life that you hope to be fruitful and abundant.

What if the Māori Health Authority actually works? 06/07/2023

In it they asked: What if the Māori Health Authority actually works? and offered three observations to help answer that very question.
