Announcing Lynette Galvan's Appointment as an Executive Member of the Auckland Provincial Fire Brigades Association ๐ŸŽ–

We are thrilled to announce that Lynette Galvan, one of our dedicated Health Consultants, has been appointed as an Executive Member of the Auckland Provincial Fire Brigades Association on June 8th, 2024.

Reflecting on her appointment, Lynette shared, "This is a very proud moment for me as a volunteer in Fire and Emergency New Zealand. The journey to my appointment has been a very long one. I was the first female to join the Putaruru Fire Brigade many years ago as a fresh-faced teen in what was typically a man's role. I was an operational firefighter, running into burning buildings and even cutting cars at motor vehicle accidents. It was a huge achievement back then for a female when ladies were rare in the fire service. I have learned many lessons and faced some very traumatic incidents during my volunteer career. But I have also built resilience, which has helped me cope with my own personal life and employment."

Lynette now serves as a senior firefighter for the Rotorua Volunteer Fire Brigade, continuing to support her FENZ colleagues in various capacities. In addition to her operational duties, she is an official for the United Fire Brigades Association, overseeing a range of firefighter challenges across New Zealand.

Lynette's dedication and passion for her role are truly inspiring, and we are incredibly proud of her success!

Congratulations, Lynette, on this amazing achievement! Your commitment and hard work continue to inspire us all.๐Ÿ’ซ

At Life Care, we continue to debunk first aid myths and provide the best tips to handle emergencies. Myth: If someone has a deep wound, it should be removed anything embedded in it. Here's the truth and what you should do instead: ๐Ÿ‘‰

Never remove anything embedded in it. Why? Because that object might be helping to stem the bleeding. Removing it could cause further trauma.

- Sit or lay the person down based on the wound location and blood loss.
If they feel dizzy or show signs of shock, raise their legs. Elevating the bleeding area above heart level can help, but remember, direct pressure is key.๐Ÿ‘ˆ

- Apply direct pressure on the wound for 10 minutes to allow clots to form.
- Once the bleeding is controlled, dress the wound. If the first dressing soaks through, apply another on top. If the second dressing also soaks through, remove both dressings and apply direct pressure to the wound source.
- For extremely heavy bleeding, consider using a tourniquet if needed.

๐Ÿค” How many of you think Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are complicated to use?

Although AEDs may seem daunting at first glance, they're straightforward to operate. Here's why: Most AEDs come with simple, step-by-step voice prompts and visual cues that guide the user through the process of administering a shock. Additionally, a defibrillator won't allow you to shock a casualty if it's not needed, so there's no risk of doing any harm.

Remember, applying good-quality CPR until an AED arrives, maximises survival rates by ensuring oxygenated blood flows to the heart and brain.

Getting the pads onto the patient's chest and administering a shock within 3 minutes can significantly increase survival chances.

Understanding how to use both CPR and an AED can make all the difference in saving a life! ๐Ÿ’ช

Traditionally, New Zealand workplaces have prioritised physical safety and injury prevention. The ACC system, for example, has focused primarily on physical injuries resulting from accidents, often overlooking mental distress unless directly linked to a physical event. Identifying psychosocial risks at work, such as stress and burnout, is complex and challenging to address. Additionally, determining whether the harm experienced is directly linked to work or arises from other factors in the individual's life is another challenge for managers and leaders in the workplace.

There is, however, a noticeable shift underway. In 2020, WorkSafe issued a position statement titled โ€˜Supporting Mentally Healthy Work,โ€™ defining what constitutes a mentally healthy workplace and emphasising its significance.

It's time for businesses to adapt and recognise the importance of mental health alongside physical safety. Life Care is taking a deeper dive into this topic to help people in organisations understand better what psychosocial risks are and what a mentally healthy workplace looks like. Stay tuned as we continue to post more about this important aspect of workplace safety and well-being. Ever heard the misconception that applying heat can heal a sprained ankle? ๐Ÿค” While it may seem logical, relying on heat for a sprain can in fact, exacerbate swelling.

Here's the real deal: ๐Ÿ‘‰ First Aid Fact: When dealing with a sprained ankle, applying heat can worsen inflammation. Opt instead for a cold compress for 10 minutes to reduce swelling. And remember, always seek medical attention if you suspect a fracture or dislocation.

Remember the RICE method for sprains:

โœ‹ Rest: Avoid movement to prevent further damage.
โ„๏ธ Ice: Apply crushed ice in a damp towel to reduce swelling, pain, and bruising.
๐ŸŒ€ Compression: Wrap the area with a bandage for support.
๐Ÿ”ผ Elevation: Keep the injured limb elevated above your heart level to minimise swelling.

๐ŸšซWhat not to do: Avoid applying heat or deep heat creams, as these can increase bleeding. Massage can also worsen swelling and bleeding, so steer clear!

Considering the flu shot for your employees? Here are some crucial factors to consider!

- Workplace Environment: Assess the risk of flu transmission in your workplace. High-traffic areas or close interactions among employees may increase the risk.
- Employee Interactions: Employees who frequently interact with others, especially vulnerable individuals, may benefit greatly from flu vaccination to prevent transmission within the workplace.
- Occupational Exposure: Certain industries, including healthcare, education, retail, hospitality, transportation, construction, and manufacturing, are particularly susceptible to flu transmission due to frequent close interactions with diverse individuals. Vaccination plays a crucial role in safeguarding both employees and the wider community they serve.

Why Consider Flu Vaccination?

1. Reduce Absenteeism: Flu vaccination can significantly decrease the number of sick days taken by employees, leading to improved productivity.
2. Protect Vulnerable Employees: Vaccination protects not only the individual but also vulnerable colleagues who may be at higher risk of flu-related complications.
3. Foster a Healthy Work Environment: By promoting flu vaccination, you demonstrate a commitment to employee well-being and create a culture of health and safety in the workplace.

Proactively encouraging flu vaccination, can help protect your workforce and promote a healthier, more productive environment. Let's talk about the flu vaccination options Life Care can provide for your business ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ฌ

Introducing our next Employee of the Month feature: Brad Smith๐ŸŒŸ
Let's take a trip back to when our Employee of the Month initiative began last year. Brad was our inaugural recipient, and for good reason!

It all started with Brad's swift response to a call for help on the Good Samaritan app, a tool designed to alert nearby First Responders to emergency incidents.

On a Sunday evening, Brad bravely rushed to the scene in his neighbourhood, where he found a community member in distress. Without hesitation, Brad sprang into action, performing CPR until the Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) responders arrived. Brad's calm demeanour and professional approach didn't go unnoticed. The Station Officer from the Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade praised Brad's quick thinking and quality CPR technique, noting how his intervention, alongside another bystander, gave the patient the best possible chance at recovery.

But Brad's contributions don't stop there. As a valued member of the Life Care team, he leads by example, demonstrating unwavering dedication and leadership in teaching first aid at the highest level. His commitment to excellence and personal leadership in the community make him a true asset to our team. Join us in congratulating Brad for his outstanding contributions and well-deserved recognition! ๐ŸŽ–

At Life Care, we continue to debunk popular myths in first aid and provide you with the right information to handle emergencies effectively! ๐Ÿš‘

Myth: Did you know there's a common misconception that a shot of alcohol can warm a hypothermic patient? However, the science says otherwise! Alcohol may give a sense of warmth, but it actually dilates blood vessels, causing more heat loss. Plus, it can impair judgment and coordination.

Here's what you should do instead:

- Remove wet clothes and provide insulation, adding layers of clothing and a hat.
- Warm the patient in a dry place.
- Warm the core first with hot sweet fluids if the patient can swallow.
- Handle the patient gently to avoid triggering an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia).
- Avoid letting severely hypothermic patients sit, stand, or walk until warmed.

Remember, putting two hypothermic patients together in a sleeping bag isn't an effective warming method. One must have a normal body temperature. It's better to wrap the patient in clothing inside a sleeping bag, and allow them to shiver, which generates heat.

Stay informed and prepared for any situation!

๐ŸŒŸ Let's raise our clean hands high for World Hand Hygiene Day!๐Ÿ™Œ
It was yesterday May 5th ๐Ÿ˜‰

While the campaign by the World Health Organization (WHO) primarily targets the healthcare industry, hand hygiene is a critical topic for every workplace and community. Why? Because clean hands are the frontline defence against harmful germs, protecting you, your loved ones, and the most vulnerable members of our society.

In addition to keeping us healthy, good hand hygiene is especially vital as we approach the flu season. By washing our hands regularly and properly, we can help prevent the spread of infections and keep ourselves and others safe.

For Health and Safety Managers, promoting hand hygiene isn't just about healthโ€”it's also about maintaining productivity. Educating and raising awareness about hand hygiene among employees is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce absenteeism and keep health targets on point.

So, let's spread the word and raise awareness of the importance of hand hygiene! ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ‘

๐ŸŒŸ Let's tackle another first-aid myth! ๐ŸŒŸ
Myth: If a child swallows something harmful, make them throw up.
Actually, making them vomit can cause more harm, like burning their throat.

Fact: Call the New Zealand Poison Centre, 0800 Poison, right away if something harmful is swallowed. Follow the instructions on labels and safety sheets of the substance if available, and don't let them eat or drink anything unless you have been told otherwise.

Stay informed about what to do is key to a safe emergency approach!

Did you know that how you breathe can affect your susceptibility to respiratory infections like the flu? People who are mouth breathers, breathing primarily through their mouths, are more prone to upper respiratory infections.

When you breathe through your nose, the air is heated and filtered in a way that helps reduce the risk of viruses entering your system. The structures within our noses act as the first line of defence, helping to destroy incoming viruses. So, next time you feel a sniffle coming on, remember to breathe through your nose! It's nature's way of giving your immune system a helping hand. Stay healthy!๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿ’จ

๐Ÿšจ Myth Busting Alert! ๐Ÿšจ
Let's dive into another common first-aid myth and separate fact from fiction!

Myth: Making a hyperventilation victim breathe into a paper bag.
This widely believed practice is actually dangerous! Encouraging someone to breathe into a paper bag can lead to dangerously low oxygen levels as they inhale excess carbon dioxide.
First Aid Fact: The best approach is to help the person breathe slowly and deeply until they relax. Offering sips of water can also be beneficial in calming their breathing.

Remember, knowing what to do in a specific situationโ€”and what NOT to doโ€”can make all the difference in providing effective first aid. Stay informed, stay safe!

Strengthening our immune system is essential for preventing illnesses like the flu. Here are some important habits to bolster your immune system:

๐Ÿ˜ด Adequate Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Sleep is crucial for immune function and helps your body recover and regenerate.

๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ Regular Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity, such as brisk walking, jogging, or cycling. Exercise boosts circulation, reduces stress, and enhances immune function.

๐Ÿฅ‘ Healthy Diet: Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support immune function.

๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™‚๏ธ Stress Management: Practice stress-reduction techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or tai chi. Chronic stress weakens the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections.

๐Ÿšฐ Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Proper hydration supports immune function by helping flush out toxins and pathogens from the body.

๐Ÿ’‰ Vaccination: Get vaccinated against the flu annually. The flu vaccine stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies that protect against specific strains of the flu virus. Here are the vax options Life Care can provide for your business https://lnkd.in/g-F8cCDa

๐Ÿ˜ท Avoiding exposure to sick individuals, maintaining a clean environment, and practising good hygiene habits contribute to your overall immune health.

Adopting these habits can strengthen your immune system and reduce your risk of getting sick with the flu and other illnesses.

Knowing fact from fiction can be life-saving in an emergency! ๐ŸŒŸ
Here's another common myth and its correct first-aid approach:

๐Ÿ›‘ Myth: Putting Someone's Head Between Their Legs When Feeling Faint.
It's a misconception that putting someone's head between their legs can help when they feel faint. In reality, this could lead to injuries. This is the same if you make them sit up, another common mistake.

โœ… Instead, lay the person down and elevate their legs to boost blood flow to the brain and aid in recovery!

Understanding the difference between first-aid misconceptions and proven first-aid care helps reduce the risk of causing more harm than good! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฉน
