"Diversity isn't just people, it is also what's inside people, including diversity of emotions. The most agile, resilient organisations and teams are built on an openness to the normal human emotions.

Emotions are data, not directives. We can show up to and mine our emotions for their values without having to listen to them.

When we are open to the difficult emotions, we are open to the responses that are values-aligned.

When we internalise the difference between how I feel in all my wisdom, and what I do in a values-aligned action, we generate the pathway to our best selves via our emotions.

In practice: when you feel a strong tough emotion, don't race for the emotional exits. What is the emotion telling you?"

So if burnout:
- FEELS different for different people.
- and is CAUSED by different things for different people...
..does that mean that a one-size-fits-all approach to burnout risk management might not really be the way to go?

30/11/2022

Did you know that burnout shows up differently in men than in women?

Women tend to experience exhaustion as a primary symptom, while men tend to depersonalise from their work.

So if burnout is expressed differently among men and women, and it can wear so many faces even within genders, perhaps it is necessary to stop implementing well intentioned strategies, and first start learning how to identify its presence.

24/11/2022

Organisations, of course, need policies and processes, training and development, working groups and organisational climate assessments. All these things have a place.

But sometimes the answers are much simpler; more connection and less process.

Now is the perfect time to lean on our humanity. Really see your people. And then respond to them as if you are a person!

21/11/2022

Burnout FYI according to Emily Nagoski and Amelia Nagoski - sister duo and burnout experts:

Self care is valuable, but it is NOT THE WAY OUT OF BURNOUT.

15/11/2022

Burnout is not inevitable - even in these trying times. And as the year winds up towards its end, practicing the following three things can make all the difference: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯
1.) Say no to new tasks.
2.) Schedule regular breaks and rest your weary brain.
3.) Ditch multi-tasking (you are really just switching your attention between tasks and, spoiler alert, it's a productivity killer!).

Give yourself permission to NOT BURN OUT for Christmas.

Employees are realising that life is too short to be in a job where they have to hide, supress or deny their whole self.

People are seeking workplaces that genuinely value diversity and are visibly inclusive. Where they don't have to always pretend to be fine. Where their humanity is not treated as a disadvantage, but instead is celebrated.

03/10/2022

Traditionally, we focus on the performance of the employee: THEIR motivation, their commitment, their attitude, their value. But let's for a moment pretend that their performance is a really just a function of the performance of their company and their manager? πŸ«€πŸ«’πŸ€”

Could it be that redirecting all that effort at ensuring the organisation is a 5-star employer, could actually be the more fruitful approach?

Employee retention 4 videos with expert panel β€” Glia 29/09/2022

The New Zealand Health Survey 2020/2021 shows that mood disorders like anxiety and depression have increased in the general population since the 2019/2020 survey. However, results from the New Zealand Workplace Diversity Survey 2022 also show inconsistent and inequitable employee access to wellness/wellbeing and flexible working initiatives.

Aside from these findings, it certainly pays to assess whether chosen initiatives are addressing what is truly a priority for employees. Generic approaches get generic results, and random initiatives get random results! If you are going to do something, why not do something actually worth the effort. Otherwise, it just seems like a waste of valuable time and resources.

There is so much more to the story of the employee. As employees more confidently than ever take the lead role in their lives, their expectations from employers are shifting. They are becoming more selective in their job search, demanding employers care about the things that matter to them.

But what is it that matters to employees? What can leaders do to attract and retain their valuable workers?

Employee retention 4 videos with expert panel β€” Glia This series contains four videos answering the questions: Why do people leave? How do we keep our people? How do we attract talent?

28/09/2022

New Zealanders have had a taste of flexible work and they want more, as recent research by Diversity Works NZ has found. But how much are companies willing to give?

Businesses are experiencing record turnover rates, as their people leave for greener pastures. Some jobs may have limited room for flexibility, however, there are many forms that flexible work arrangements can take. So don't rule out this highly attractive work benefit just yet.

Our expert panel shares the most important information you need to know in short, to-the-point conversations.

EMPLOYEE RETENTION: REIMAGINING HOW TO RETAIN YOUR PEOPLE: Expert Panel Video Series with Bridget Jelley, Iain McCormick, and Jay Barrett.

The New Zealand employment market has undergone BIG changes over the last 2 years. Employees know what they want, and it isn’t at all what it used to be.

Stats NZ show unemployment at an all-time low. Employee skill-shortages and voluntary turnover is experiencing a record high. People are leaving their jobs in droves, looking for something better.

But what do employees want? What drives them to commit to a company? πŸ€―πŸ€”

Well, we wouldn’t ask the question if we didn’t already have the answers!

In four clear and to-the-point videos, our specialist panel shares the most important information you need to know to keep your valuable staff from leaving the organisation. πŸ₯ΉπŸ˜¨πŸ«€

What type of leader are you?
Do you exhibit empathy?
Do you provide adequate challenge? How do you know?
Do you equip your people to deal with change? Would they agree?
Do you allow job autonomy? Perhaps too much? Or not enough?

Leadership is but one of the many things to consider when we want to keep our people.

13/09/2022

Employee retention requires an employee retention strategy. 🧐

When it comes to talent retention, the wait-and-see 'approach' is a great way to show your employees just how much they are not valued. Lofty promises, as our people head out the door toward better opportunities, come too little too late. If you want the right people to stick around, you have to give them a reason to!

https://glia.co.nz/workshops/employee-retention-reimagining-how-to-retain-our-people

Turnover has a long tail and its effects may not only be more far-reaching than you know, but more long lasting. Lost productivity, recruitment, and training may be the most obvious and upfront turnover costs, but they are by no means the only costs.

29/08/2022

Employees resign - that is a normal and expected part of running a business. πŸ₯ΉπŸ‘‹

There is, however, a notable increase in the national turnover rate across New Zealand, and the financial implications for businesses are BIG.

26/08/2022

Is it time to flip the script? Rather than ask why you should be interested in potential recruits, should you be asking why they should be interested in being recruited by you? 😲

Increasingly people are prioritising work-life balance, values, and meaningful work above job security and organisational loyalty.

Gone are the days that tenure imply hierarchical seniority. Cycling through careers, rather than proving low organisational commitment, now is deemed to demonstrate flexibility, a growth mindset, drive, and a transferable skill set.

18/08/2022

Flow in the workplace leads to productive, contented employees. 😊

β€œThe best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times . . . The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile” (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990).

When our work requires little skill, and offers little challenge, it is a recipe for apathy. But when work is a well balanced mix of challenge and ability, we may enter a state of flow, where the rest of the world melts away.

We can wait for happiness to 'find us', or we can grab our trail mix and go and FIND IT!! πŸ˜ŽπŸœβ›ΊοΈπŸ₯œ

Emotions, moods or mental states tied to forces outside of ourselves will be subject to unpredictable and repeated change!

The happiest people in life are not those with the most stuff, the best jobs, or the biggest social networks. Those things are all external to us.

Real happiness is a mindset, an intention that resides inside of us. And yes, it takes work; for most of us it doesn't just happen.

Wouldn't it be so much more fun if meetings were opened with a moment of hilarity instead of the usual predictable agenda items. πŸ₯±πŸ˜΄πŸ™„

Having a laugh is good for the body, mind, and business bottomline. No joke.

Laughter generates beneficial brain chemicals that, among other things, can be used to diffuse workplace tensions.

WRONG: More work = more success = more happiness... πŸ€”
More happiness = more work = more success. BINGO! 🀯

According to psychologist Shawn Achor, positivity in the present creates a happiness advantage; the phenomenon where our brain at positive performs significantly better than at negative, neutral or stressed.

Our Story

How we do this is through using what science tells us about people and behaviour and applying that to business. Business problems are usually people problems, and when you invest in your people, the business problems resolve themselves. This is where we come in.

Our business is people. We have dedicated our careers to doing what we need to do to understand how people tick and developing our knowledge and skills so we can really make a difference. It is therefore important to us that we are not only up to date with what the latest literature is telling us from the fields of Psychology, Neuroscience and Business, but that we also measure what we do. Otherwise how do you know what you are doing actually works? We then take all that great knowledge to design effective and lasting solutions for our clients through consulting, coaching and training.

We work with organisations who care about their people like we do and who want everybody to have the opportunity to be great not only at work but also at life.
