Meet our current student Sammie Nginingini. 👋😀

Sammie is originally from Hamilton Boys' High School and is currently in his final year of studying the Bachelor of Laws majoring in Law and Pacific Indigenous Studies. He's also currently the President of our Pacific Law Students Association.

Since studying here at Waikato, Sammie has achieved many accomplishments, including undertaking an exciting summer internship at the Department of the Prime Minister (DPMC) and Cabinet (New Zealand). 💼

The internship involved Sammie doing a research policy and investigating whether the public commission should incorporate a hybrid work model within the public sector. He also worked with the legal council to update relevant legislation and case laws on certain issues.

Once he graduates, Sammie is hoping to practice Criminal Law as a Crown Prosecutor as a way of giving back to his people and the community. ❤️

"I'm hoping to further develop my skills and knowledge in the legal sector as well as the culture of the indigenous people," says Sammie.

"I love the academic culture here. The motto of our Pacific community here at Waikato is “IMUA” which means moving forward, not individually, but moving forward as a collective."

Temiloluwa Fayomi celebrated her graduation surrounded by family, saying they’ve been her source of inspiration. ❤️ The family moved to New Zealand 10 years ago from in search of a better future and opportunities.

Temiloluwa recently received her Bachelor of Laws with a second major in Political Science from the University of Waikato. 🎓

"I'm so excited, it was a tough four years. There were times in there where I wasn't sure if I was able to get through, so it's good to be done," she says.

"I've wanted to be a lawyer since I was 7. As a little kid, I could never stand the fact of someone being treated unfairly, so it was a natural progression for me."

Congratulations Temiloluwa! ✨

It’s also the first time Waikato University has won the UTSNZ event and qualified for the world championships.

“I feel very fortunate to be part of both teams as we make history for the University of Waikato on the world stage,” says Jack.

A Waikato University law academic has obtained funding for research in digital public safety and law enforcement.

Dr Michael Dizon is a Senior Lecturer in Te Piringa Faculty of Law and is involved in a project called Public Safety and Law Enforcement in the Digital Age: Horizon-scanning Existing and Emerging Technologies.

Michael and the university are partnering with Royal United Services Institute - a UK-based defence and security think tank. The project will look at the implications of technologies such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence on public safety and law enforcement in New Zealand. It’ll also look at social, economic and policy issues concerning privacy, freedom of expression, cybersecurity and cybercrime, as well as possible impacts on tangata whenua and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The law tends to lag behind and play catch-up to technical advancements. Projects like this help the government and relevant stakeholders to get ahead and be better prepared for the challenges and opportunities.

Michael also recently received the Thomson Reuters Award for Research Excellence in Law. The award is in recognition of his involvement in major technology law projects both here and abroad and his research publications in international and national law journals on the topic of encryption regulation.
