Huaketo Noro (Norovirus) is a horrible tummy bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea. It spreads very easily from person-to-person and from contaminated food, water and surfaces. There is no medicine for norovirus, but you can ease your symptoms at home with rest and plenty of water.
You should see your hauora provider if you have a weakened immune system, bloody diarrhoea, a fever or if your symptoms have not gone away after 7 days.
It’s also important to seek care for tamariki (children) if they:
- are not drinking
- are passing less wee (urine) than usual
- have a dry mouth or sunken eyes
- seem drowsy.
You are usually infectious for 3 days after your symptoms stop, so stay home and practice good hand hygiene to stop the spread.
Healthify has some great information about norovirus to help you take care of yourself and your whānau

Who should get up, get dressed and get moving?
Everyone who is in hospital should get up, get dressed and get moving when they
are well enough to do so. This is especially important for older people.

27/08/2024

Hear more about the importance of Get Up, Get Dressed, Get Moving from our Staff!

Here are some useful tips about keeping active in hospital:
 Sit out in your chair for every meal and
when you have visitors.
 Get out of bed and walk around your room or the ward multiple times a day
 Get up to go to the bathroom.
 If you are capable, set yourself your walking goals, for example walking up and down the passage four times a day.
 Have your whānau or visitors go on walks with you.
 If you use mobility aids, continue to use them. Ask your whānau to bring in your
usual walking aid (make sure to put your name on this).
 Consider asking for a list of exercises you can complete in your own time or
with whānau.
 If you need to rest in bed due to your medical condition, ask about how you
can still stay active in bed.

26/08/2024

Why is it important that I get moving again?
You can get back any muscle strength that you lost when you were unwell and help to
improve your independence. You can rebuild a sense of control, self-confidence and structure to your day.
This will help improve your overall sense of wellbeing.
You can increase your chances of recovery and getting home sooner.

Our teams at Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU) and Medical Speciality Ward at Palmerston North Regional Hospital were thrilled to receive a wonderful Feel Good Friday feedback from one of the patients. ❤

“I was discharged today after spending time in MAPU and Medical Specialist Unit. I have nothing but admiration for your staff from the cleaners, orderlies, ward assistants and, of course the nurses and Doctors. I was treated with professionalism, kindness and love. Although I was sick, it sometimes was even fun. Even the meals were great. I lay on my bed in my hospital PJs and was brought 3 delicious meals a day. What's not to like. The staff received but they just smiled and carried on with their duties. They are truly wonderful people. Thank you, staff. Arohanui.”

Awesome mahi team! Your dedication and compassion towards patient care definitely makes positive difference. 👏

An estimated 150,000 Kiwis live with Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) and most people are unaware they have it.

If you have hepatitis B, symptoms can include:
• nausea
• tiredness
• dark p*e (urine)
• pale or light-coloured poo
• joint and muscle pain
• feeling unwell
• yellow eyes or skin (jaundice).

Symptoms usually appear two to three months after you catch hepatitis B, but they can start anytime from six weeks to six months after infection.

Sometimes people don’t feel sick when catching hepatitis B but develop symptoms later in life.

Chronic hepatitis B infection can progress to cirrhosis (liver disease) and liver cancer, so it’s important to take preventative measures:
• get vaccinated - https://info.health.nz/immunisations/vaccines-aotearoa/hep-b-vaccines
• practice safe s*x
• don’t share needles or syringes (for example tattoo or acupuncture needles)
• avoid sharing personal items like toothbrushes and razors.

If you think you might have hepatitis B, or have had close contact with someone who has it:
• see your healthcare provider
• call Healthline on 0800 611 116

Find out more about hepatitis B here: https://info.health.nz/conditions-treatments/infectious-diseases/hepatitis-b/

Meretene Winter is a Whanau Ora Link Nurse within our Pae Ora team at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora MidCentral. Her role involves offering care and support to Māori inpatients at Palmerston North Regional Hospital.

“My role was originally established in 2018 with the goal of engaging with Māori inpatients in our hospital who require clinical input through a cultural lens and following them up in the community post-discharge to ensure they have the correct supports in place. The role has evolved since then, as our team has grown, and I have had the opportunity to sit in some leadership spaces in our organisation as well as build good networks and relationships with my colleagues in the hospital and providers out in the community.”

Originally from Gisborne, Meretene moved to our rohe 21 years ago to start her career in nursing. She began as a graduate nurse for Ward 29 in 2007 and then took on a role in our community as a long-term condition nurse before assuming her current role in 2018.

“I became a nurse because I knew I wanted to care for people when they are at their most vulnerable. I decided to work in Māori health because I wanted to be part of improving the health outcomes and experiences for Māori in our health system.”

“This mahi is unique because we view health from a Te Ao Māori perspective, including all facets of wellbeing, as well as being able to relate to the lived reality of our people.”

Outside of work, Meretene cherishes quality time with her whānau, creating precious memories at home. She has a passion for music and singing, often filling her home with melodies. Whenever possible, she loves going back home to Wairoa and Gisborne to reconnect with her heritage.

You’re a star, Meretene🌟 – thank you for all your mahi! ❤
