*Kitten found*

An approximately 4 month old tabby and white female kitten has been found on the side of the road near 1380 Arapuni Road. The kitten is now unfortunately deceased. 😢 She was missing most of one hind limb which appeared to be due to a birth defect and had no microchip.
If you think she is yours and would like to be sure please contact the clinic in the morning.

CAT FOUND

This young female cat that bas been hanging around a house in Veda Lane TA for about 10 days. She has no microchip but appears to be speyed (although we can’t be sure). If you suspect she is yours give us a call on 07 871 3091.

This week is veterinary receptionist appreciation week. Our receptionist are the friendly faces that greet you when you walk through the door. We appreciate all the hard work they put in daily to keep the clinic running smoothly. None of us would be able to do our jobs without them!

CALLING ALL DOG OWNERS

You may have heard about the exotic disease Babesia gibsoni which has been recently diagnosed in two dogs in Canterbury. The disease is mainly spread by ticks but can also be spread by dog fights, play or from mother to puppies. Due to this, although the risk is low, we are recommending you make sure your dogs flea and tick treatment is up to date.

Beware not all flea treatments work for ticks. Treatments that work include:
* Nexguard and nexguard spectra
* Bravecto chewable and spot-on
* Frontline plus and frontline spray
* Seresto collars
If your dog is not treated with one of these or is out of date pop in a grab a treatment to protect your fur baby.

OTOROHANGA CLINIC

On Monday the trees at the front of our Otorohanga clinic will be trimmed. Due to this the front gates will be closed. The clinic is still OPEN and the back gate is open for parking.

Pacifica is a newly discovered Lepto strain that could be present in 74% of dairy herds throughout New Zealand. Lepto is difficult to eliminate but minimisation through a comprehensive vaccination programme and other simple strategies is your best bet to manage the risk.

With the development of a new vaccine, Lepto 4-WayTM we will be discussing our upgraded vaccination policy at your RVM.

Our new policy will provide coverage against the emergence of the ‘Pacifica’ lepto strain.

Vaccination with Lepto 4-WayTM is the primary way of protecting humans against lepto. Rising rates of human cases suggests that vaccination alone is not enough- hygiene, staff education and reducing contact with sources of infection is also helpful.

Missing Puppy!

Please contact our clinic if you have seen or have any information regarding this 7 month old red and white border collie named Bear. Missing since Friday last week in the Te Awamutu area.

HEAT STRESS

At this time of year one of the most common animal health problems is heat stress. This can affect any animals from cows to dogs.

FARM ANIMALS
- Make sure they always have plenty of access to water at all times.
- Put stock in sheltered paddocks on hot days.
- Sprinklers in yards and sheds can be a big help if you have access to these.
- Hosing down sheds before milking can help keep concrete cool.
- Pigs should have mud to roll in or be hosed down daily.

PETS
- These should have access to water and shelter at all times.
- Avoid shutting dogs in cars in summer, and if doing this for a short time always leave a window open.
- If pets are shut inside, fans can be helpful on hot days.
- On hot days walk dogs early in the morning or in evening as hot concrete can burn their paws.
- Animals with a lot of white can get sun burnt which predisposes to cancer. Zinc cream can help to prevent this. This is especially important around the nose and ears.

A deceased female silver tortishell cat was found near Albert Park Drive this afternoon. She has no microchip. If you think she may be yours and want to be sure get in contact with us.

ATTENTION LIFESTYLE BLOCKERS

We have made and printed calendars with all the things you need to do to keep your livestock healthy. There is one for cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas and pigs. If you would like copies of these come into the clinic and let the large animal reception team know what animals you have. Prevention of disease is important for healthy animals!🌱
