Congratulations to Jun Shihan Gerard McCarthy from Seido Karate Te Awamutu who was graded to 6th dan by Eiko Hanshi Renzie Hanham in Seido Karate Christchurch Shibu this weekend. We look forward to seeing you step onto the dojo floor as a Jun Shihan, osu!

Congratulations as well to Sei Shihans Rob Forlong (Whangarei) and Fiona Ramsay (Christchurch) who also successfully graded. All three started karate in the Manawatu dojo.

This month marks a huge milestone for our Branch Chief Sei Shihan Michael, who has now been practising karate continuously for 50 YEARS!
He started in February 1974 at Seido Karate Christchurch Shibu when pursuing a law degree at Canterbury University. He attained his Shodan in November 1979 then moved to Te Awamutu in 1980 where he started Seido Karate Te Awamutu in August of that year.
He was a foundation member of Seido Karate (formed in 1976) and has visited World Seido Karate Headquarters - Honbu in New York to train on seven occasions. He has been a 6th Dan Black Belt for over 17 years – the last 10 years as a Sei Shihan.
He was admitted to the New Zealand Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2021.

During class last week we paid tribute to Eiko Hanshi Andy Barber. Our condolences to Sei Shihan Jane, Jun Shihan Aaron and all Eiko Hanshi's family.

Eiko Hanshi leaves behind a legacy of a much respected and inspirational leader.

It is with much sadness that I advise that one of the two pillars of Seido Karate in New Zealand-Eiko Hanshi Andy Barber- has passed away. Our sincere condolences are extended to Sei Shihan Jane and The Barber whanau!

Congratulations to Shuseki Shihans Neil, Peter, Harry, Gavin and Ben who were graded to 7th Dan over the weekend by Kaicho.
We also congratulate the seven seniors who graded in New York at the same time.
