Hassan’s Journey to Safety ⛺

Hassan*, 6, and his sister Fikira*, 3, fled the war in Sudan with their parents after intense fighting destroyed homes in their Khartoum neighbourhood. Fikira was so terrified by the explosions that she couldn’t breathe, and the family struggled to find any functioning hospitals.

Now living in a transit centre in Renk, South Sudan, Hassan often asks about his school and teacher. He loves drawing and dreams of returning to school soon.

Save the Children has supported Hassan’s family with essential items like blankets and mosquito nets. Through safe spaces, we are helping children like Hassan to play, learn, and recover from the trauma they’ve experienced.

Celebrating International Day of Sign Languages 🤟🌍

Today, we honour the beauty and diversity of sign languages across the globe! 🌐

Sign languages are an integral part of cultural identity and communication for millions of people. They foster inclusion, breaking down barriers, and ensuring everyone has a voice, regardless of their hearing ability. 🤝

Join us in learning a few signs today with Sylvie, one of our Generation Hope NZ Ambassadors, and let’s celebrate the power of non-verbal communication! 💬

🎥 Ahmed Adel Speaks from Karkar Bus Station | SUDAN CRISIS 🚨

At the Karkar Bus Station in Aswan, Egypt, Save the Children teams are on the ground, supporting families fleeing Sudan. As all buses from Sudan pass through this area, many families are arriving every day.

Our teams are providing Mental Health and Psycho-Social Support (MHPSS) activities for children and helping parents manage the stress of displacement. We’ve set up games and art activities for children, offering them a safe space to cope with their experiences before continuing their journey through Egypt.

Watch Ahmed Adel share more about this vital support.

🚨 Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan 🚨

51% of Sudan’s population—25 million people—are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Of these, 14 million are children. The scale of the crisis is vast and growing.

💔 Sudan now holds the tragic record for the largest displacement globally. Since mid-April, 8.6 million people have been displaced by conflict, rising to over 11 million when you include pre-conflict displacement. This is unprecedented in the country’s history.

We must come together to support those affected. Donate today https://www.savethechildren.org.nz/how-to-help/donate/sudan-crisis

“The future of the world rests with the child.” – so wrote Save the Children’s founder Eglantyne Jebb 100 years ago in an early draft of the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child. That document – the foundation of what we know as child rights today – later formed the basis of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Eglantyne Jebb may not be a household name here in New Zealand, but her legacy for children here and around the world lives on.

Last night, alongside Ricardo Menéndez March MP, we hosted an event at Parliament to mark 100 years of child rights, and showcase our life-changing climate adaptation and child protection work in the Pacific, Asia and around the world. A huge shout out to Save the Children Cambodia Country Director Reaksmey Hong who travelled to Aotearoa to share his stories of the incredible work being done in his home country to create positive change for children - and what more needs to be done. Thank you to our MC Jehan Casinader and panellists Reaksmey, Chief Children's Commissioner Dr Claire Achmad Children and Young People's Commission NZ, TVNZ Pacific Correspondent Barbara Dreaver, Generation Hope NZ Youth Ambassador Jemima, and Child Protection Technical Advisor Anna Lazar who shared their insights around how we're tracking on children's rights in New Zealand and around the world.

And a giant ngā mihi nui to the Rāwhiti kapa haka group from Wellington East Girls College who shared their passion and talent with us all.

This year marks 50 years of Save the Children working with successive New Zealand Governments to deliver overseas development assistance and humanitarian response and thank you to the many members of parliament who attended the event, including Climate Change Minister Simon Watts MP for North Shore.

Last night was a celebration - and a re-commitment. To growing vital partnerships with children and for children until the rights of every child, no matter where in the world they live, are respected, protected and upheld. ❤️💚💜

❤️🖤🤍 It's Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori! ❤️🖤🤍On the 14th of September, Aotearoa recognises the anniversary of te Petihana Reo Māori, the Māori Language Petition. Te Petihana, signed by more than 30,000 people, signified a major turning point in the revitalisation of te reo Māori. It is an example of the importance of hearing the voices of our young people, as it was led by rangitahi, who advocated for te reo Māori to be taught in all schools. 👏

He mōtika tō ia tamaiti! Every child has rights!

In Aotearoa New Zealand, we consider the rights of children in the context of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and a child’s connection with their family, whānau, hapu, iwi and communities. If you are Māori or any other culture, you have the right to use your language, and practice the culture of your family.

Through climate resilience and livelihood projects, we’re helping communities by introducing permaculture techniques to create sustainable, climate-adaptive gardens. This initiative is ensuring a brighter, healthier future for their children.

📚📚📚 Exciting news! Library For All launches in Vanuatu for International Literacy Day!

Children in Vanuatu will soon enjoy local stories that spark the imagination, thanks to the launch of Save the Children’s Library for All project, just in time for International Literacy Day, 8th September. Supported by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this initiative aims to create 100 unique books, reflecting Vanuatu’s rich culture and encouraging a lifelong love of reading.

Writing workshops will take place in communities across the country, developing stories that resonate with local children and strengthen their sense of place and identity. More than 8,000 copies will be distributed to children in remote areas, fostering a love of reading and learning.

Katherine Kasso, Programme Manager, says: “Literacy creates opportunities. We hope these books will reflect the lives of children in Vanuatu, inspiring them to unlock their potential and build brighter futures.” ❤️

📚 Happy International Literacy Day! ✨

Since 1966, we’ve come together globally to recognise the transformative power of literacy. This year’s theme, “Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies”, emphasises literacy’s key role in fostering peace, inclusivity, and sustainability.

Literacy goes beyond reading and writing—it’s a tool for empowerment and building a brighter, more peaceful future for everyone. Hear from our Generation Hope NZ Youth Rōpū and let’s continue to support literacy as a pathway to a better world.

🥘🍜🥗 Make a deliciously healthy Kumara Soup with Junior! 😋

Junior is your average teenager - a funny, confident, charismatic one. He loves soccer and making his four younger siblings giggle. But there’s way too much on Junior’s young shoulders.

His community in Solomon Islands is one of the most vulnerable in the world to climate change. Rising sea levels, combined with more deadly storms, have flattened homes and killed the crops that so many families rely on.

“I usually feel sad and sometimes I feel sick because I have nothing to eat, because the rising sea level has damaged our food,” says Junior. “I feel angry and sad.”

That’s why Save the Children NZ is helping young people in Solomon Islands adapt for challenging times ahead, with training sessions on climate-resilient farming, soil management, and by educating communities about which crops will grow best in extreme weather.

We hope you enjoy cooking with Junior today, let us know if you get to try his creamy Kumara Soup! (also known as Sweet Potato soup) 🥥🥔

In honour of Father's Day and all the incredible dads and guardians out there, we wanted to share this amazing 🏆 story with you!

Jeevan was working in India to support his family in Nepal, a sacrifice that kept him away from his children during their early years. He missed out on important moments, but his love for his family never wavered.

He told us, “My first son and two daughters were born at home. At the time, I was struggling with alcohol, and I didn’t focus much on their growth and development.”

Everything changed when Jeevan and his family joined our Nepal Early Start project. Through this programme, parents received vital education on maternal and child health, along with positive parenting practices, helping Jeevan realize his role as a father in a new light.

“I took support from the psychosocial counselor, and now I’m committed to giving up alcohol and becoming a better parent,” Jeevan shared. “Once I knew what I wanted for my family, I decided I couldn’t leave them to work in India again."

Jeevan’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength and dedication that fathers bring to their families. This Father’s Day, we salute all the dads out there making a difference! ❤️
