✈️ Elevating Excellence in Aviation! 🏆
Kudos to the top guns of the WorldSkills New Zealand Aircraft Maintenance competition at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in November:
🥇 Gold — Elliott Farnan ( Air New Zealand, Auckland)
🥈 Silver — Michael Hey (Airbus, New Zealand)
🥉 Bronze — Tim Duncan (HeliSupport New Zealand Ltd, New Zealand)
Hats off to all competitors for nailing it! Your skills are legit world-class.
Dave Evans, ServiceIQ Sector Manager - Aviation and Defence, says: “Aeronautical Engineering maintenance operators have always had a strong training culture in the highly regulated sector. The Apprenticeship systems that have been in place for many years, produce globally sought-after engineers. New Zealand’s first experience of the international WorldSkills competition in 2013 produced a Silver medal by Mike West from the RNZAF. This was followed a Gold medal in 2017 by Jarrod Wood from Air New Zealand. All the New Zealand competitors at the international competition do very well. This success proves that the New Zealand training system is world class.
Given the global staff shortages in the aviation industry New Zealand is well placed to become a global trainer for aviation engineers.
Congratulations to Elliott Farnan who was the winner of the national competition for 2023. Elliott is a 20-year-old second year apprentice from Air New Zealand, so an outstanding effort for this young engineer who has a great future ahead of him."
And the winners are in!
Special congratulations to our top placegetters: Gold — Elliott Farnan (Air New Zealand, Auckland), Silver — Michael Hey (Airbus New Zealand), Bronze —Tim Duncan (HeliSupport New Zealand).
Well done to all our WorldSkills NZ Aircraft Maintenance competitors, what an awesome two days!
It’s been a great first week of the school holidays for students who attended the two ServiceIQ Gateway Cultural Camps at Waitomo and Waimarama.
The camps give Year 13 students the rare opportunity to gain first-hand experience, practical skills, and unit standards, while staying in a unique New Zealand cultural setting. Thanks Hospitality Training Trust for the fantastic support and helping make these Camps happen.
Here’s some of the learning and fun from Waimarama, with students from William Colenso College Tamatea High School, Taradale High School, Katikati College, and Taikura Rudolf Steiner School.

It’s fantastic to be working with the fantastic folk at The Warehouse
stores like The Warehouse to give thousands of students great learning and work experience opportunities.
Two wonderful examples from Dargaville High School are Coleman Maaka-McCrea who has Down Syndrome and Harmony Hemara who has learning issues. Both excelled on their The Warehouse Red Shirts in Schools Gateway
https://www.serviceiq.org.nz/schools/gateway-training/red-shirts-in-schools/ training, which is run by .
Jo Laing-Smith, of The Warehouse says:
“We have had the pleasure of Harmony and Coleman join us here at The Warehouse Red Shirts in Schools Gateway programme. They have both been extremely helpful in their time here.
“Harmony, shy at first has really come out of her shell. Her passion was the Clothing Department - I could always tell when she had been there, with table stock folded perfectly and everything else hung so neatly.
“Coleman is an extremely outgoing young man. He really enjoyed working in our toy department but would also help other team members with tasks such as dropping footwear from the tops in preparation for our yearly stocktake.
“Thank you, Harmony and Coleman, for lending us a hand here at the Dargaville Red Shed.”
Harmony and Coleman are working towards their Customer Service Award and the 23 NCEA Level 2 credits that go with it. Fantastic mahi!

The 2023/24 WorldSkills Aircraft Maintenance events to find the best young New Zealand maintenance engineers (born from 1999 onwards) have been announced. Successful competitors will represent the country at the WorldSkills International in Lyon, France in September 2024.
It kicks off 22 July with the National Selection competition (for up to 12 competitors) at the Air Force school at Woodbourne. The skills tested will include:
• a component replacement on a gas turbine
• a daily inspection on an aircraft
• a sheet metal fabrication task.
Then, at the National Competition up to eight competitors will strive to show they’re the best over two days in Oct/Nov (date TBC) at the Air Force Museum in Christchurch. This National Champion will have significant training opportunities to prepare for the 2024 event in France.
New Zealand entrants to the International WorldSkills events have often done well: New Zealand won a Silver medal on its first outing in 2013 (CPL Mike West, RNZAF ) and a Gold medal in 2019 (Jarrod Wood, Air New Zealand). This is an ideal opportunity for aviation engineering organisations to recognise their best and brightest by encouraging them to enter.
