To preserve New Zealand's heritage relating to hunting, deerstalking, shooting and fi****ms for future generations. An integral arm of the NZDA.
Introduction
In the more than 150 years since the introduction of game animals to New Zealand, there have been many traditions created, many fine trophies taken and a legacy of hunting lore established which is unique to this Country. The heritage of our pioneering past has brought a familiarity with fi****ms and a love of the firearm related field sports and recreation as well as a realisation o
Lighting and fi****ms display installation continues. Next we need security glass and display signage but the funding has finished. You can help by sponsoring a display or buying a donation coin at the NZDA online shop.
Musuem update. Our walk-in rifle strongroom fitout commenced this week. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped move rifles and lift cabinets. It's progressing well. We hope to have it open to visitors attending next weekend's NZDA Conference. Thanks to our sponsors and donors for funding this project.
Thanks to the museum volunteers who helped install two Fiordland wapiti heads yesterday: McDonald's and Morrow's. It's a considerable effort to hang these old, heavy, and truly massive trophies.
Big announcement! We are in the final stages of constructing the National Hunting and Shooting Museum here in Wellington. It is a first in the country and will give the public a fantastic introduction to the fascinating history of hunting and fi****ms in New Zealand. For many it will be the first time that they have seen fi****ms or any of the magnificent animals that are on display.
If you are passionate about our history and game animals and would like to contribute, we now offer opportunities to donate financially to preserve our sporting history.
You can visit the NZDA shop to make a donation and pick up a commemorative coin here: https://nzda.shop/collections/heritage-museum-donation
This past weekend, the Trust was granted custodianship of Douglas McDonald's epic 14pt Wapiti bull taken in the Edith, 1931. This head holds the record for the longest antler ever recorded on a Fiordland Wap, with the left antler at 60.5 inches.
To remove it from its Invercargill location, Trustee Tim Watson was ably assisted by the Southland NZDA branch executive. Shaun McKelvie set it up, and Scott Hall & Doug Gordon turned up on the day. A big thanks, team Southland NZDA.
The head is now being boxed up for the rest of its trip to its new home at the Trust Museum in Wellington. Thanks to Jenny McDonald, Rob Clark, and Noel Bonisch for all your organising too.
It's been in the pipeline for awhile, but they're finally here -new display cabinetry is being installed in the Trust building. This will incorporate static and digital displays, to complement what we've already installed. Onwards!
Museum Update: Our long-awaited museum display fitout started this week. Thanks to our members who pay their annual NZDA $3 membership levy and our regular donors and volunteers who believe in preserving our hunting heritage. We've exhausted our funds now, so we'll kickstart some fundraising initiatives this coming year. Here's a sneak peek of progress.
If you want to donate today, you can get instructions here: https://www.deerstalkers.org.nz/join-and-support-hunting/donate-to-nzda/
Holly Barrett has kindly shared photos of her dad Del Jenkins who was a Govt hunter in the 40-50's:
"He was part of the scientific study of wapiti in Fiordand by the "New Zealand - American Fiordland Expedition in 1949". More can be read about this in the book "New Zealand Hunters' Paradise" by Phillip Holden."
These photos are a great representation of the clothing, tentage and gear available back then, not to mention Del who was obviously straight out of "Good keen man" mold. The ever present .303 is also pictured.
Thanks Holly.
Trust member Tim Watson has just put up this vid of trip he carried out in April, celebrating 100 years since the 1st Wapiti was taken in Fiordland
