Merging Blocks by internationally renowned designer Sabine Marcelis is the ninth artwork to be commissioned by the Wellington Sculpture Trust for the Collin Post 4 Plinths Project on the Te Papa forecourt.

Freshly installed, and unveiled last night, the mirrored glass volumes inject a warmth into the grey bollards and reflect the ever changing mood of the city and the hijinks of the weather.

Many thanks to Sabine and her team including Scale studios for a beautiful artwork and smooth install, the Collin Post Family Trust, the Netherlands Embassy, CNZ and the team at Wellington Waterfront.

Phil Price’s much loved Protoplasm has been given a refurbishment to get the pebbles spinning freely again.

First installed in 2002, you can see the fully wind responsive Protoplasm on the corner of Lambton Quay and Featherston and Hunter Streets.

Thanks and Greg from WCC.

Wellington Sculpture Trust is celebrating its 40th Anniversary by gifting an extended reality Sculpture to Wellington.

‘HALO’ by artist Gill Gatfield is a giant marble circle created in the metaverse, available to all Wellingtonians via mobile phone.

Visible from the waterfront and the terrace outside the Te Papa Bush Walk, you can download the app at these locations to view the work floating over the harbour virtually.

Artist Gill Gatfield says: “Defying gravity, HALO appears out of the ether, an ancient stone circle and futurist monument. Its crystalline stone and ephemeral form evoke optical phenomena as well as celestial haloes. A circular symbol of unity, the sustainable sculpture honours the past and conjures new possibilities.”

Revealing the ephemeral monument at a 40th Anniversary celebration last night, Sue Elliott, Chair of the Wellington Sculpture Trust said “the work is a fitting gift to the city – its monumental classical form commemorating the work the Trust has done, and the virtual experience is a nod to the Trust’s future.”

Collin Post 4 Plinths Project - Artist Announced

We are delighted to announce the winner of the Collin Post 4 Plinths Project is Sabine Marcelis, a Dutch designer. For the first time in the Project’s 18-year history the award has gone to an artist outside of New Zealand. Sabine receives $50,000 to deliver a work for the four plinths outside Te Papa.
Sabine has an incredible international standing being the first designer to be exhibited at the Venice Biennale, and the 2023 winner of the Elle Décor Designer of the Year award.
In her work, Merging Blocks, Sabine incorporates the plinths as part of the work. Her use of colour and materiality within the merging blocks is a signature of Sabine’s practice and the large flat planes of the coloured glass, inject a warmth into the grey bollards. Light plays a crucial role in the work, where during the day sunlight will reach through the blocks to cast beautiful colour reflections on the ground, as well as charging inbuilt solar panels to light the work at night.
Sabine is the Trust’s second award recipient under the partnership with Collin Post’s family which commemorates the life of Collin, a long-time stalwart of the Trust and art and culture in Wellington more generally.
The family’s support of the Collin Post Four Plinths Project enables his patronage to remain dynamic with the evolving showcase of sculpture on the 4 plinths.
Sabine’s work will be the ninth in the 4 Plinths award series, and it will remain on the site for a maximum of two years. Merging Blocks will be installed in February 2024 in time for the opening of next year’s International Arts Festival.
Renders of the work on site.

Wellington Sculpture Trust’s newest sculpture The Grove, by Glen Hayward, was unveiled by Mayor Tory Whanau this week on Wellington’s waterfront.

Glen’s work consists of 16, four metre high nails, sculpted from wood recycled from a former Wellington wharf. Elegantly honouring the maritime history of Wellington’s waterfront, the work sits at the entrance to Whitmore Plaza alongside landscape design by Isthmus.

Wellington Sculpture Trust

The Wellington Sculpture Trust was established in 1982 and is a voluntary and independent charitable trust dedicated to enriching Wellington by providing contemporary innovative public art for the city.

We have installed 27 works in the city centre, waterfront, along Cobham Drive near Wellington’s airport, and in the Botanic Garden.

The large body of work that is now in these locations provides for three distinct sculpture walks that enable people to enjoy the works in the gardens, on the waterfront, or in the CBD, as well as being able to enjoy them as they get about the city.

Our aim is not only to commission public works of art, but also to encourage and support sculptural practice in New Zealand.
