After tomorrow's screening of The Devils (1971), viewers may be interested in this documentary which details some of the controversial censorship battles the film has faced over it's lifetime (contains spoilers for the film)
Hell on Earth The Desecration & Resurrection of The Devils 2004
Already engaged in a promising career as a painter, the trajectory of Derek Jarman's life changed when Ken Russell approached him to design the production of Russell's film The Devil's (1971). Jarman's stark and baroque designs for the film are iconic, and set the film in striking contrast from other more restrained period films. The scale of Jarman's massive white stone Loudun sets can only be appreciated on the big screen, such as at our screening this Monday at 6:15pm.
We are delighted to be screening two films associated with the exhibition Derek Jarman: Delphinium Days, which is presented at The Dowse Art Museum between 28 September 2024 and 26 January 2025.
The exhibition has been co-developed by Gus Fisher Gallery and City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi.
We are screening The Devils, directed by Ken Russell, which marked Derek Jarman’s debut work on a feature film as production designer (on 16 September), and Edward II, directed by Jarman, a daring, q***r, anachronistic adaptation of Christopher Marlowe’s play 1594 play. (on 30 September).
If you're not a member already, you can grab a three film sampler membership to see both films plus one other from our programme.

We're thrilled to support 'Derek Jarman: Delphinium Days' coming to Wellington later this month!
Derek Jarman (1942-1994) was a pioneering British filmmaker, artist, and gay rights activist. He courageously put his experiences at the centre of his work, challenging cultural norms and politics of his time. This powerful exhibition celebrates Jarman's multifaceted legacy and explores his fascinating connection to Aotearoa New Zealand.
The British Council New Zealand and the Pacific will be supporting a public programme alongside the exhibition, including a screening programme in partnership with Wellington Film Society which will showcase Jarman's feature films, expanding the exhibition experience across the city.

Our full 2024 schedule is now live on our website. We’ve got some brilliant titles that we'd already announced, including Solaris and All About Eve, as well as some titles that you’ll be reading about for the first time!
Normally, we would announce our entire program at the start of the year. This year, though, we thought we might have to take a break while the Embassy underwent some renovations. Those renovations aren't going ahead this year, so we're excited to announce we'll be screening continuously all the way through 2024.
We're thrilled to announce two films — The Devils and Edward II — that are connected to the upcoming City Gallery exhibition, Derek Jarman: Delphinium Days, which will explore the life and work of the hugely influential British artist, activist, and filmmaker.
