Celebrate pride by preventing violence against rainbow people.

Supporting and creating rainbow safe spaces is a great way to help stop violence against rainbow people in Aotearoa. Rainbow experiences of violence are complex and specific, often relating to people's unique lived experience. Having spaces where we can connect and be supported by people with similar lived experiences to our own can make all the difference for us in recovering from and preventing violence.

Help us by sharing these tiles and encouraging Aotearoa to ask some hard questions about rainbow experiences of violence in our beautiful country. You can also keep in touch and pledge your support for rainbow people in Aotearoa here https://rvpn.nz/this-is-us-needs-all-of-us/

Celebrate pride by preventing violence against rainbow people.

Learning about rainbow experiences of violence and discrimination is one way you can do this. Unfortunately, rainbow people still carry the burden of needing to constantly assess their safety, this is a barrier to getting support. Understanding that rainbow people are the experts in their own experiences, and listening to them is a great way to care for the safety of rainbow people around you.

Celebrate pride by preventing violence against rainbow people.

One simple thing that you can do to support rainbow people is to believe them. The history of doubt, pathologisation and criminalisation of rainbow people and communities still impacts our rainbow whānau. This can make it unsafe for rainbow people to disclose. Saying “I believe you” to rainbow people with your words and actions is a simple but profound way to support our healing.

Thousand of s*xual harassment incidents at high schools - survey 01/11/2022

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/thousands-of-s*xual-harassment-incidents-revealed-in-survey-at-two-christchurch-high-schools/AHP5OEXRX5FLDGTVUSPQCR73UQ/

Last week new reports were published by two high schools in NZ. It’s really relevant for our work and we think it’s reasonable to extrapolate the statistics to other schools across New Zealand and wider young people’s experiences. We know there is under reporting of SV so the numbers could well be bigger than these.
Great to see these two schools taking the time to do these surveys so they can understand the extent of the problems and now start to address the issues. *xeducation

Earlier in the year the student associations MAWSA and VUWSA teamed up the Pōneke Promise and local artist Cosmo Bones to create a piece of art on Manners Street celebrating consent for S*x Week 2022. A QR code has been installed on the artwork to give passers by the opportunity to hear what good, healthy, s*xy consent can sound like. It’s a story set in the context of a night out, a conversation between two people. If you listen to them chatting throughout the night, you’ll hear them communicating consent in lots of different ways. We are often told what consent isn’t, and the times when it isn’t possible. But we wanted to show you what it is. Listen here to hear freely given, mutual voluntary, informed, enthusiastic, reversible, full, s*xual consent.

National Coming Out Day 2022

ThisIsUs Campaign is raising awareness about Rainbow Violence prevention. In support of National Coming Out Day, today is an opportunity to highlight the importance of each person’s individual choice to come out. Healthy Relationships are key to preventing violence. Sometimes people are not ready to come out, and that’s okay. When you support your partner, you are actively preventing harm.

When it comes to s*x and young people, there are several times you know FOR SURE that someone is unable to give consent.

ONE OF THESE TIMES ARE WHEN SOMEONE IS UNDER 16 YEARS OLD.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, the legal age of consent is 16 years old. This is so the law can protect young people from older people who might be trying to take advantage of them. It isn’t intended to punish young people who are thinking about s*x or doing s*xual stuff. Everyone involved must be 16 years of age or older to consent to s*x.

If you aren’t sure, have more questions or need help you can seek advice from us or from SAFETOTALK 0800 044 334 or text 4334

Primary prevention addresses the underlying causes of s*xual violence.
We want to prevent harm before it occurs.

A key aspect to preventing s*xual violence and its harm is to intervene sooner, build strong and healthy social norms, develop relational practices, and ensure everyone has safe pathways for disclosing harm to safe and appropriate people.

This means working with community in all spaces to effect social change!

Follow us to see RespectEd’s journey.
Get on board with our vision for the prevention of s*xual harm in Aotearoa!

Today we awhi and support Layba Zubair, the creator of the consent law reform petition in handing over the Consent Law Reform Petition to Minister Davidson.
We too are calling for legislation that will provide a clear positive definition of consent and recognise the need for free and voluntary agreement at the time of the act.
And we know that incorporating a Legislative program into Te Aorerekura is the next step for the prevention and elimination s*xual violence in Aotearoa.
What these reforms will mean:
These reforms will support a preventative response to s*xual violence and will bring positive change and impact from a criminal justice perspective.
Its preventative in that when new laws are implemented and socialised, they will better reflect healthy s*xual relationships and assist people to know consent must always be present. These reforms will reduce violence and harm done and will increase protections for survivors going through the justice system

We look forward to the Minister of Justice championing this work and putting Consent reform on her work program

Youth activist, Layba Zubair, is calling for consent law reform in Aotearoa. She has launched a petition asking that the House of Representatives urge the Government to reform the current consent laws. As a part of the petition, Layba share's her belief that the definition of consent in our current laws does not reflect the necessity for free and voluntary agreement at the time of the act.
