The Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust:
Founded by Craig Shepherd and focused on the rehabilitation of waterfowl, but also attends to seabirds and some other breeds of birds as required. These birds largely come from the SPCA and vet clinics, but we also get some from the Wellington Zoo, Massey University, and members of the public. We deal with over 1000 birds per year aside from our permanent

Here at WBRT one of our bigger costs is food for all the different birds we take in. It ranges from Honey Eater for nectar eating birds such as Tui to Mackerel Sprats for Cormorants and everything in between. For example if you have a look at the Kereru diet poster you will see that little of their extensive diet is cheap and they certainly chow down on it.
We recently put out a call for dog biscuits and were absolutely delighted to get 80kgs donated by Helen and a large amount from Nicole and many others including Miramar Vets.
This is on top of a number of our regular food donors including fireman Stu and his wife and from Kaibosh (https://www.facebook.com/Kaibosh.NZ/) and from Kiwi Community Assistance (https://www.facebook.com/kiwicommunityassistance) of foods that are either damaged or no longer fit for human consumption. We hugely appreciate the support and can not do without it so “A Big Thanks” to our food heroes, you all rock!

Seagulls Get A Rough Time of it 👇😞
Here at WBRT we get lots of seagulls in for care. Usually they have suffered a fractured wing or have been entangled in fishing line.
Yesterday we posted about someone deliberately swerving in their car to hit a seagull.
Today we have attended what is probably a poisoning event (to be investigated) in the Pauahatanui inlet on Grays Road near Cambourne. We were alerted about 1230 and immediately had two people attend with cages and nets. They found 7 barely alive and 9 dead gulls. Dogs had seemingly got to a couple unfortunately as this toxin has caused paralysis, so they cannot get away fast enough. 2 died shortly after being recovered and a fifth one sadly looks like it won’t survive the night despite our best efforts. 😢
If you see any more sick gulls please phone ASAP on 0508 69 2473. If you see any dead gulls please recover them and dispose of them appropriately to reduce the chances of secondary poisoning to other birds and animals. If you have any idea of how this happened please FB us.
Yesterday I was working my day job out at Seaview and I took a call from a lady with an injured juvenile seagull that had been hit by a car. She was also doing her day job but she put that on hold and drove to meet me with the seagull. When we met it turned out that she and her colleague had watched a driver in Taita deliberately swerve to hit the seagull. As much as they wanted to pursue the driver they quickly stopped and grabbed the seagull off the road. To Ellen and Bayden of The Dog Wizard New Zealand you are both angels!
To the driver in Taita, you are an A***e!
Fortunately the seagull does not have any obvious fractures or lacerations and has been given fluids, pain relief, food and a warm bed. Tomorrow it will be radiographed and vet-checked and I am hopeful of a good outcome.
WE NEED DOG BISCUITS!
We use this food as a part of some birds captive diets! After a busy few months, we have run out of the biscuits. 🙃
We are asking our awesome supporters and followers if you have any excess or can donate a bag! We have easy access storage lockers at our gate where donations can be dropped off, or we can arrange drop off points if this is easier!
Thanks to you all in advance 🐾🦆🫶

What a glorious morning. ☀️ Our sweet resident Paradise Duck, Lady is soaking up that sunshine!
Who needs some Pet Muscovy Ducks in their life?! YOU DO!👍👏
These quiet, tail wagging, head bobbing domestic ducks are an absolute pleasure to be around, and come with the quirkiest traits. We have recently taken in 8 males and 6 females, all needing a new place to call home.
We also still have an “angel wing” pair; Glider and Blider, along with 2 others with the same ailment that are ready to go!
WBRT desperately need your help to get these fun loving ducks safe and secure, forever homes. Let us know if you can help! Even if it’s just one to add to an already established flock! 🙏
Glider and Blider - A sweet (Angel Wing) Boy & Girl duo ✨
They need a special home where they can be watched over to ensure their wings don’t cause any issues getting around etc.
Get in touch if you can help provide them the safe space they deserve ❤️
These 5 beautiful Pekin Ducks (Domestic Breed) are needing a new, safe & forever home after being left to fend for themselves in an wild area that is not appropriate for them! If you are able to help these birds out, and once we have verified you are able to provide them what they need to thrive, we can arrange rounding them up, and transporting them. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help
Congratulations Ian & Leigh for being drawn as this months Raffle winner! The Boston Living Pack, and a gorgeous Lavender plant is coming your way!
To those that did not win this time, please know we are so greatful for the purchase as this in turn, is a donation to the work we do, and makes a massive difference to the birds in our care
Low Cost Bins never rubbished our request when we asked for help!
Low Cost Bins of Wellington are an amazing company who provide all sorts of bins for dealing with waste and recycling for residential and commercial clients.
They have everything from wheelie bins to frontload bins, recycling bins and skip bins.
At WBRT we use a lot of wheelie bins to store food, shredding for bedding and waste that comes from the birds that we turn into compost.
We were always struggling to store everything due to the increasing scale of our work so I approached Brittany at Low Cost Bins and she could not have been more helpful with supplying us a good number of wheelie bins to help us out.
Every donation of goods saves us money that we can then put into improved help for the many birds we take in for care.
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Low Cost Bins for their huge and generous help to us here at WBRT

This is one of the lovely ducks we care for at WBRT. She has a permanent beak injury requiring her to have monitoring and provisions of easily accessible feed. While we are a rehabilitation with the goal of rehome and release, broken beak ducks & 1 legged ducks will always be welcome to a home here, to help them still thrive in life! (We do adopt out if people have appropriate environments)
Donations to our Charity help significantly towards continuing helping ducks just like these! You can do this through our give a little;
