A survey on training needs for Small Scale Forest Owners was circulated to NZFFA members in late May 2023. Thank you to those who responded earlier. However, we would like responses from a larger pool of people, especially from those new to planting trees and in the pastoral farming area, so have opened the survey to more responses. If you have already responded in the last few months, please do not respond again. We will still have your replies.
Small Scale Forest Owners are those land owners and managers with fewer than 1,000 hectares of forestry. They include farmers as well as owners of small blocks with woodlots, shelter belts and riparian planting. The survey takes about five minutes to complete. We really encourage you to participate.
By collecting this information, we hope to develop future learning and training options to help you in your tree growing endeavours. Your responses and any associated personal details collected will only be used for the purposes of this survey and will remain confidential. No individual response will be identified in the final analysis.
Please complete this survey below before 31 August 2023.
Any queries please contact Eric Cairns [email protected]

We are super excited to have Dr Simeon Smaille as part of our line up of speakers at the NZFFA conference, kicking off this week!
He will be sharing insights from recent research into trees, and carbon and methane dynamics. 🌳☁️☀️
Nick Ledgard will be giving conference attendees an overview of the research trial site at Balmoral Station, on day 4 of the conference!
He will delve into the changes in soil nutrient status, and biodiversity at the site.
Allan Laurie is a man who needs little introduction!
We are looking forward to Allan speaking on day 3 of the conference, at Gladwyn. He will be speaking on whether to harvest or not to harvest, the decision-making process.
He will address these key questions:
🌳 Is it too early to harvest, what am I losing in potential yield?
🌳 Should we harvest at all and turn the block into a carbon forest?
Have you got a wetland area on farm?
Then make sure you come along to the NZFFA conference to hear from guest speaker Aslan Wright-Stow, who is a senior Environment Manager at DairyNZ. He will be sharing information on how nutrient loss can be mitigated through wetlands and riparian planting. 🌳🌲🌾
The countdown is on!
ONE WEEK until the NZFFA 2023 conference kicks off in Timaru.

New Zealand Farm Forestry Association
Welcome to the NZ Farm Forestry Association – the home for those with small forestry blocks – farmers, foresters, investors, growers, and managers. NZFFA are a network of tree growers each practicing sustainable land management in rural New Zealand.
NZFFA was formed in 1957. Our membership is spread over 27 branches throughout NZ, and there are 6 special interests groups. We estimate our members own or manage up to 100,000Ha of forest, and influence the management of a similar area. These forests consist of radiata pine; cypress; eucalypts; redwood; blackwood; other exotic species and managed indigenous forests.
The NZ Farm Forestry Association is also a partner in the Forest Growers Commodity Levy. We represent growers throughout New Zealand to further their interests. We also produce a quarterly market report on log prices.
Visit our website to join NZFFA and start networking! Our website provides a growing library of information on all aspects of farm forestry. General information is available to all visitors but some detailed and membership-specific information is reserved for members of the Association.
