Amazing Omanis and friends. I will never forget you.
Welcome to my space.
My name is Miles Trethewey, and I'm an English Teacher Trainer and world traveller who loves photography. I'm a big fan of the FujiFilm series, and I have a XT10 and XT30 entry level cameras and now own the S22 Samsung Ultra.
I first bought the XT10 for my epic 5000km journey across India from Mumbai up to Rajasthan and across to Varanasi and the Sunderban Swamps in Kolkata to recover from my divorce in 2016. Having a partner for almost 20 years and then within a blink of an eye, your life gets swept away.
I was born in Zambia near one of the copper mines. My parents spoke of fond memories in those days of rugby clubs and expat lifestyle in Mufalira. My dad was a diesel mechanic, and my mom was a typist who married in 1965, I believe. Both have passed on. My dad was a heavy drinker but was a very good model aeroplane builder, and my mum was the stone to our upbringing. In fact, she encouraged me to leave South Africa when I was a teenager. "Miles, get the hell out of this godforsaken pit hole." I never quite understood how she put up with my dad's drinking.
I did my national service in the medicorps from 1987 to 1989 and was stationed in Oshakati in South West Africa [Namibia] as a medic. It's probably one of my most bonding times as a young man.
After the army, I completed an apprenticship
as a fitter in the steel works, but never went down the tradesman route.
In 1992, I left South Africa to backpack around Europe and the UK, and later, I did some volunteer work on a flower farm in Israel. There, I met Thai workers who invited me to Thailand in 1994. That's when it all began. I met my girlfriend and started my TEFL career in Bangkok before the age of the Internet and Instagram. We had a beautiful boy who is grown up now and living with his mum in the north of Thailand.
We moved to the UAE in 2007 to live and work on the East Coast of Fujairah. A truly unforgettable experience. My son also has fond memories there. We were able to meet some great people from all walks of life. I was introduced to Satsang and the Indian community. We have all gone out separate ways now.
In 2014, we moved back to Thailand to settle my son in an international school. I then returned to the UAE for another 3.5 years before going to work in Malaysia.
I remarried in 2016 and had a few good years, but Covid took a toil on our relationship, which later led to long separation and divorce.
Later in 2019, I got headhunted for a teacher training job in Oman, and that is where I marshalled on during COVID19 era, taking the training center to a well-oiled machine. I've spent 4 years here in Muscat, Oman, and my era has ended and am returning to Thailand to seek work and a better life in South East Asia and maybe even start over in Taiwan.
The Omanis are one of the nicest people in the world, and the safety factor is so good. I met some fabulous and super reliable teachers and CELTA tutors while working here, really!
I'd really like to hear your lifestory.
