Arequipa, also referred to as "La Ciudad Blanca" (The White City), is built almost entirely of sillar, a white volcanic stone, which gives the city its distinctive luminosity. The use of sillar is not only an architectural choice but a cultural symbol of Arequipa.

Ashlar comes from nearby volcanic quarries set on the slopes of the Chachani and Misti volcanoes. These rugged volcanic sites bear witness to this artisanal extraction, a traditional occupation passed down through generations.
