PNG Cancer Relief Society Donates Three Critical Machines to The National Cancer Services PNG
The Society, has been supporting cancer patients in Papua New Guinea for 48 years now and continues its dedication to enhancing cancer care.
Last week Friday, September 19th, we donated three essential medical machines to the National Cancer Center at Angau Memorial Hospital.
The donated equipment includes:
1. A suction machine for the cancer wards.
2. An electrocardiography (ECG) machine for the chemotherapy day ward.
3. A gynecological table for gynecologic examinations at the cancer center.
Dr. Cathy Timothy, Physician at the National Cancer Center, expressed deep gratitude to the PNG Cancer Relief Society and donors, acknowledging the critical need for this equipment. She emphasized the importance of the ECG machine, particularly for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
“The center has never had an ECG machine, which is crucial for monitoring the hearts of patients receiving certain chemotherapy drugs that can affect cardiac function. Ensuring the heart is healthy before chemotherapy is vital,” Dr. Timothy said. She also confirmed that the ECG machine is already in use, while the suction machine and gynecological table will soon be set up in the clinic.
Dr. Timothy further noted that with the recent reopening of the radiotherapy machine, the number of women and girls seeking gynecologic examinations is expected to increase. “We treat many cervical cancer patients, and having a proper gynecological table for thorough examinations is essential,” she added.
The society would like to make a special mention to the donor of the funds used in purchasing these machines, The Order of Saint John. And to the rest of our partners who continue to support us in enhancing cancer care in Papua New Guinea.
Pictured below is our Community Engagement Officer, Joy Olali presenting the three machines to the Cancer Center's Physician, Dr. Cathy Timothy (right) and senior radiation therapist Julie Cecil.
The Papua New Guinea Oncology Nurses Association (PaNGONA) held an impactful session today on the often-overlooked side effect of cancer treatment: taste alteration. Dr. Pauline Rose, a leading expert, led the session, providing nurses with valuable insights into this challenging symptom.
Dr. Pauline Rose's presentation covered the science behind taste perception and how cancer treatments can disrupt this delicate system, leading to metallic tastes, reduced sensitivity, and even complete taste loss. She emphasized the significant impact these changes have on patients' appetites and overall quality of life.
Beyond theory, Dr. Pauline Rose offered practical advice and strategies for nurses to support their patients. She stressed open communication and highlighted the role of nutritional counseling in mitigating the negative effects of taste alteration.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, allowing participants to delve deeper into specific challenges faced in their practice. Pauline Rose expertly addressed each query, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
The PaNGONA expressed gratitude to Dr. Pauline Rose for her invaluable contribution. Next week's session will focus on pediatric oncology, led by their specialized team.
Nurses interested in joining the PaNGONA are encouraged to reach out via email at [email protected] or WhatsApp at (675) 78639889.

The Pacific Adventist University Career Expo 2024: A Special Day for Nursing Students
Today marks a significant milestone for Pacific Adventist University (PAU) nursing students as they gained valuable insights into their future careers at the PAU Career Expo 2024. Organized through the initiative of the PAU Nursing Department and the Director of Nursing Services, PMGH, the event featured a dedicated nursing team from Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) who shared their expertise and experiences with the students.
The event provided an excellent opportunity for PAU nursing students to understand what life will be like in the nursing field after completing their studies. The PMGH team discussed various career pathways and specializations within the nursing profession, offering students a comprehensive view of their potential future roles.
More than 50 nursing students and 3 tutors attended the talk, actively engaging with the speakers by raising numerous questions, all of which were answered thoroughly. This interactive session helped students gain a deeper understanding of the diverse opportunities and challenges they may encounter in their nursing careers.
A special thank you goes to the Director of Nursing Services, Training Coordinator and Project Officer of Port Moresby General Hospital for their efforts in making this initiative a success. Their collaboration with PAU has provided students with an invaluable learning experience, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical application in the healthcare field.

ONCOLOGY NURSES CARRY OUT AWARENESS ON CANCER TO MARK DAFFODIL MONTH
By Vonu LIBITINO
DAFFODIL Month is dedicated to raising awareness about cancer and it is being observed in this month of August in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
To mark Daffodil Month, the PNG Oncology Nurses Association (PNGONA) has been carrying out awareness of cancer in the hospitals that they serve in.
PNGONA President Mr. Peter Fore said they usually go out to do community awareness, however their busy schedules have not permitted that this year.
He explained the significance of the Yellow Daffodil Flower, the symbol that is used to mark awareness of cancer, saying that it represents love and hope.
“How does this relate to cancer,” Mr. Fore posed the question.
He went onto explain that in the awareness that they carry out, they make it know that cancer is treatable.
“The public and even people that are diagnosed with cancer, do not know and understand what this disease is.
And when people are first diagnosed with cancer, they think it is the end of the road and they are going lose their lives,” Mr. Fore said.
Mr. Fore, who is an oncology nurse who helps care for cancer patients, said the idea of cancer being a death sentence is far from the truth.
“They are means and ways and treatments available to prolong a cancer patients’ life.
It all depends on the level of cancer you have,” he said.
He said this information is part of the awareness of cancer, that are now carrying out in the hospitals.
And in raising this awareness on cancer, Mr. Fore hopes that more people become health conscious and go for thorough health checks to detect and threat cancer early.

Dear Oncology Nurses, interested nurses in oncology and other health professionals.
Welcome to our weekly zoom tutorials.
This Thursday, 15/08/2024, Dr. Pauline Rose will be taking us through Palliative Radiotherapy.
Palliative radiotherapy is a treatment for advanced cancer that focuses on alleviating symptoms rather than curing the disease. It uses targeted radiation to shrink tumors, reduce pain, control bleeding, and relieve pressure on organs. This approach improves the patient's quality of life by addressing specific areas causing discomfort. The treatment can be administered externally or internally, depending on the tumor's location. Palliative radiotherapy is an essential component of supportive cancer care, providing significant relief and enhancing the well-being of patients in their final stages.
