PHILIPPINE FLAG FLIES FOR FREEDOM
NOTHING can be as uplifting as the sight of the Philippine flag being hoisted up in the air, throwing you back to a time when Filipinos fought and won their freedom.
Today, May 28, the Philippines begins to celebrate for two weeks the event that time in history, that fight and victory for freedom and independence.
On this day in 1898, the Philippine flag was hoisted for the very first time on Philippine soil after General Emilio Aguinaldo and his troops declared its first victory against the Spaniards after a treacherous fight, now known as the Battle of Alapan.
It has been the nation’s living proof that Filipinos are willing to fight and die for the country.
Filipino seamstresses led by Marcela Marino Agoncillo, wife of the first Filipino diplomat Felipe Agoncillo, sewn the first Philippine flag in Hong Kong for five days in May 1898, according to the Official Gazette.
It was part of Aguinaldo’s preparations for the second phase of the Philippine Revolution, which later led to the birth of the Philippine Republic in 1899, according to historians.
On March 6, 1965, President Diosdado Macapagal signed Presidential Proclamation No. 374, declaring the “28th day of May each year as Flag Day” to commemorate the momentous occasion.
It became a week-long commemoration after President Fidel V. Ramos signed Republic Act 8491 in 2004, also known as the "Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines,” extending the period of the National Flag Day celebration from May 28 to June 12, the day when Manila’s independence from Spain was formally declared.
That flag unfurls for the men and women who fought and brought us back that freedom. Watch that flag as it is hoisted on a pole, sing and feel the national anthem “Lupang Hinirang”, especially that powerful part: “Ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo.’’
Remember the time when bells rang for freedom, remember the Filipino heroes for that freedom, honor the flag that symbolized their struggle. Feel that towering feeling.
