"My ugliest but also my happiest moments. I love you, lolo."
These are the heartfelt words of Igorot Cadet 1st Class Decilan Joy Valdez Egsan, a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Bagong Sinag Class of 2024 from Benguet. In her viral graduation photo, Egsan is seen placing her ceremonial hat on her Lolo's head.
This touching gesture reflects her deep gratitude and dedication to her grandfather and family, who have supported her throughout her journey. The photo not only marks a significant achievement but also highlights the strong bonds and love that have been essential to her success.
Congratulations to Decilan Joy Valdez Egsan and her family on this remarkable accomplishment!
THE CREATOR OF "LAMPITOK"
Nestor Daguines, widely known as "Boyong," hails from Buguias, Benguet, and has carved a remarkable path in the world of filmmaking without formal education. Driven by a deep passion for movies since childhood, Daguines transitioned from being a van driver to a self-taught filmmaker, fueled by his curiosity about how films were made.
Through dedication and resourcefulness, Daguines honed his skills by watching YouTube tutorials and participating in various seminars and workshops related to filmmaking. His perseverance paid off when, in 2012, he and fellow Igorot director Sendong successfully directed the first Igorot indie film, "Busol." This groundbreaking film was showcased at one of the largest gatherings of Filipino independent films in Cebu City, marking the first time an Igorot-made film was featured in such a prestigious event.
Daguines' commitment to producing films that reflect the Igorot culture has driven him to continue his craft, despite the lack of formal education and limited resources. His filmography includes titles like "Sik-a Et Baw," "White Lady," "Di ka Maupay," "Timplan di Layad," and many more.
In addition to live-action films, Daguines ventured into animation, creating the first Igorot animated series, "Lampitok," a humorous cartoon that quickly went viral in the Cordillera region. His success in filmmaking has inspired him to produce more Igorot films, with the hope that more Cordillerans will support his work.
Today, Daguines' films are available in CD and DVD formats at Igorot movie outlets in Baguio and La Trinidad, allowing a wider audience to appreciate his contributions to Igorot cinema.
After a successful premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2024, And So It Begins by critically acclaimed filmmaker Ramona S. Diaz is finally coming to Philippine cinemas. Watch the trailer:

This gentleman is Sinai Carino Hamada, one of the founders and the first editor of the Baguio Midland Courier. Born in 1911, his father was Ryukichi Hamada, a Japanese immigrant and his mother was Josefa Carino, an Ibaloi.
In 1947, together with his brother Oseo and their sister Cecilia, they founded the Baguio Midland Courier.
Before founding the newspaper, Sinai studied at the University of the Philippines in Diliman where he earned degrees in journalism and law. From 1936 to 1937, Sinai was the editor-in-chief of the Philippine Collegian, the official student publication of the university.
During the Marcos regime, Sinai was among the dissenting journalists who were thrown in jail. The Baguio Midland Courier was also shut down by the regime.
Sinai died in September 1991.

EDIT: I edited out the part mentioning the shutting down of the paper during the Marcos regime. Publication of the paper was uninterrupted during this time. I relied on the Wikipedia entry about Hamada without double-checking the entry's cited and linked sources. My bad. Thank you to Leia Castro-Margate and others who pointed out the error in the comments section.
EDIT 2: The paper was founded by Sinai and some of his friends. I originally wrote that the paper was founded by Sinai and his siblings Oseo and Cecile. Oseo and Cecile only joined the paper much later.
