On Eased Restriction in the City of Baguio

As of today, August 29, 2020, we have 79 active cases in the city. This comes as a result of our aggressive expanded testing in various sectors. Not only is this an indication of places and industries with high risk and high exposure, it also serves as a reminder to us to not let our guards down. COVID-19 is still here and we should always take the necessary precautions – whether it be at home, at work, or while we are going about with our daily activities.

This virus is new, unseen, unforeseen – which is why there is no clear-cut solution that will make it go away with certainty and finality. For months we have been implementing localized action and response plans, maintaining those practices that are effective, and modifying those that are not. For that, I thank the citizenry for its patience, understanding, and cooperation. But, the battle is not yet over. We must forge on by learning to live with this virus. I understand that one needs food for sustenance, but we cannot count out the positive effects of physical activity, and the company of friends and family. Which is why, once again, we will try to ease up on restrictions within the city.

Beginning Monday, Mall schedules will be suspended. As such, we need not use our Mall and Market passes to enter private commercial establishments. However, entry into the Public Market will be according to our assigned district schedules until further notice. Families may go out, but please be mindful of our health standards and protocols. If it is not essential, or if it is to an area where your family members may be exposed to risk of COVID-19 transmission, then let us err on the side of caution and just stay home.

For clarification, our residents may go out to access essential goods and services, or for purposes of work-even our senior citizens. But in keeping with previous advisories, greater care should be afforded to senior citizens and immunocompromised persons, to ensure that they have minimal exposure to health risks.

Our temporary liquor ban will be lifted beginning on September 1, 2020. With that concession, I urge and remind everyone to drink responsibly, and in moderation. Let us refrain from sharing glasses and utensils, and drinking excessively. Socialize, but do so with social distancing. The COVID-19 IATF should not be constrained to implement a third liquor ban.

With these eased restrictions, I remind everyone: keep your guards up, and apply minimum health standards in every instance.

When you are at home: wash your hands and change your clothes before you spend time with your family, disinfect your door k***s and other frequently touched surfaces in the home, and monitor each other for flu-like symptoms.

We cannot control COVID-19, but we can certainly control how we react and respond to it. A disciplined and responsible mindset is reflected in our actions, and when exercised collectively, we are more empowered to contain and mitigate the effects of COVID-19 in our city.
