The German military headgear Stahlhelm is regarded by many as one of the most effective combat helmets produced during the war.⠀
⠀
In 1916, the Stahlhelm or “steel helmet” was introduced to German troops as a replacement for their leather Pickelhaube. Designed by mechanical engineer Friedrich Schwerd, the Stahlhelm provided the soldiers with more protection and visibility. Their use greatly diminished the number of war casualties particularly those who suffered from severe head injuries.⠀
⠀
The early model of Stahlhelm was inspired by a medieval combat helmet called sallet. Colored in gray with distinctive rim crimping, the helmet was modified into Model 1935 or M1935 which had cutaway areas around ears for better hearing. This model was used by the armies of other countries like the Republic of China, Argentina, Chile, and Spain. Its design also influenced several military and police headgears used in the 20th century.⠀

On this day in 1963, Buddhist monk Quang Duc publicly burnt himself to death. The act was a plea for President Ngo Dinh Diem to show "charity and compassion" to all religions. He was protesting the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government, and his actions were seen as the catalyst for the regime's downfall later that year. After his death, his body was re-cremated, but it was said that his heart remained intact which was interpreted as a symbol of compassion. It also led Buddhists to revere him as a bodhisattva.
On this day, we commemorate the momentous event that is which when our Philippine national flag was first waved with pride, joy, and hard earned freedom. It is on the backs and sacrifices of our fellow Filipinos and heroes that our country stood, they fought for freedom, freedom that is still being fought for by our frontliners—our modern katipuneros. Sama sama nating isigaw; Abanse, Pilipinas!

For the 122nd Philippine Independence Day celebration, Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan calls on the XU community to pray for healing, clarity, and solidarity as uncertainty looms over the Philippines from the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing debate on the Anti-Terrorism Bill.
As a Filipino, Catholic, and Jesuit institution, Xavier Ateneo upholds the right to live freely in dignity. May the truth liberate Filipinos from committing the same errors time and history had taught them.
