As the Philippines navigates the recent emergence of monkeypox (mpox), concerns are naturally rising about its potential impact on the stock market, especially in comparison to the havoc caused by COVID-19. However, it’s crucial to understand that monkeypox is fundamentally different from COVID-19 in several ways that could mitigate its impact on the economy and the stock market.

Unlike COVID-19, which spread rapidly through airborne transmission, monkeypox primarily spreads through close, physical contact. This makes it easier to contain, as isolation of symptomatic individuals can significantly reduce its spread. Moreover, monkeypox has a much lower transmission rate and a longer incubation period, providing more time for public health interventions to be effective.

The Philippine stock market, which experienced severe volatility during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, is less likely to be similarly affected by monkeypox. The virus does not have the same potential to disrupt large-scale economic activities because it is easier to manage and contain. Additionally, the availability of vaccines and treatments, which were developed for smallpox and are effective against monkeypox, further diminishes the likelihood of widespread disruption.

While it is wise to stay informed and cautious, the overall impact of monkeypox on the Philippine stock market is expected to be far less significant than that of COVID-19. Investors should monitor the situation, but panic selling or drastic market shifts similar to those seen during COVID-19 are unlikely unless the situation changes drastically.

It's a reminder that, although public health concerns must be taken seriously, the economic implications of monkeypox are currently much more contained and manageable than the pandemic we all experienced.

XRP???

The price of XRP, the seventh largest cryptocurrency on the market, kicked off the new week with the green candles suddenly outshining all of its top competitors. This price action reignited talk of what could be the biggest breakout in its price history.

Thus, as some may know or notice on the chart, since 2018, after XRP ended its nearly 60,000% rally in 315 days, the price of the popular cryptocurrency started to decline, but in a specific way. As one can see, a symmetrical bullish triangle pattern has been formed following the price performance of XRP over the past six years.

This pattern is formed when the price paints lower highs and higher lows, with two converging trend lines meeting at the apex. It suggests indecision on the market with decreasing volatility as the price approaches the apex. Source: TradingView

Typically, the pattern signals that the price may break out in the direction of the existing trend, which, if we are still following the 2018 case, is up. This indicates a continuation of bullish momentum for XRP once the breakout occurs.

Judging by the XRP price chart, there is not much left before the pattern is completed. However, the end has not come this year and will probably not come in the first half of 2025 either.

It is interesting to see where XRP could go if the triangle is indeed to be, as the cryptocurrency is already a $30 billion asset, and if it achieves even half of 2018's performance, it will be 30,000%. That means XRP's market cap could reach $9.66 trillion - something you probably did not believe could happen.

BSP HOLDS RATES AT 6.50%, CONSIDERS CUTS BY AUGUST

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) held interest rates steady at 6.50% during its latest policy meeting, marking the fifth consecutive hold, but signaled potential rate cuts starting as early as August if inflation continues to trend downwards.

The BSP adjusted its inflation forecasts, lowering this year's expectation to 3.8% and setting next year’s at 3.3%, while hinting at possible easing in response to April's lower-than-expected inflation rate. Despite keeping rates unchanged, the central bank remains open to reducing reserve requirement ratios and interest rates later this year to support economic growth and manage inflation within its target range.

JUST IN: Inflation picked up to 3.4% in February, faster than the 2.8% in January but much slower than the 8.6% in the same month a year ago.

This was also within the BSP's 2.8-3.6% forecast for the month.

February inflation was also above the 3% median estimate yielded in a BusinessWorld poll of 16 analysts.

Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. ($MBT) raised $1 billion with their dual tranche offering of five and 10-year dollar-denominated notes. The bonds were priced at 110 basis points and 130 basis points above the benchmark US Treasury notes, carrying fixed coupon rates of 5.375% and 5.50%.
