The TLRC is an Academic Center, which provides instructional and enrichment programs.
FREE Webinar for all with E-Certificate!
Groups, regardless of size and orientation, are part of our everyday life. This holds true to the adage, “No man is an island.” We are interconnected and we have the capacity to help or hinder one another’s growth and development. In the academic setting, activities in groups enable students to have meaningful learning experiences, a deeper understanding of the content, and to have enhanced thinking skills.
Acknowledging that one critical factor to the success of the conduct of group learning activities is the facilitator themselves, the K.U.A.N.: Key UnArticulated Notes from education Webinar Series of the UP Cebu Teaching and Learning Center (TLRC) and the Master of Education program will hold a learning session on Basic Group Facilitation that will be presented by Mr. Jeffrey D. Pelonio.
Mr. Pelonio is from Talisay City, Cebu. He is currently working as a Guidance Services
Specialist for the College of Social Sciences at the University of the Philippines-Cebu. He finished his Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Master of Education Major in Guidance and Counseling at the University of San Carlos. He also earned a Certificate of Professional Education from Cebu Normal University. He is a Licensed Professional Teacher and a Registered Guidance Counselor with 19 years of experience working as a Guidance Counselor handling Basic Education and Tertiary students. Married for 17 years with one daughter, he is presently residing in Cebu City.
This KUAN episode that aims to equip participants with group facilitation and empathic skills for better and meaningful learning experiences will be on July 31, 2024, Wednesday at 1:30 pm. The Zoom Room will open at 1:00 pm.
We can accommodate 300 participants in Zoom but for those who may not make it there, you may also watch the live in our Youtube Channel: and still receive the e-certificate at the end as long as you have successfully registered and completed the evaluation form.

Is useless science worth doing?
🤨When I talk about my work to non-scientists, they often ask me: how does your research on worms apply to humans? It’s a fair question. Most science is funded by taxpayers with the expectation that scientists solve society’s most pressing problems.
🕚But I don’t think science has to be useful to be valuable. We often judge science based on its present usefulness - its ability to solve climate change now or cure cancer right this very moment. But current advances in these areas were enabled by research 30, 50, 60 years ago, research that were often dismissed as irrelevant at that time.
🔮The true value of science is in its ability to make the future possible. Research that may seem useless today could usher in a scientific revolution tomorrow. No one knows what the future looks like, so why do we judge science based on the present?
🧬In 1998, the worm C. elegans became the first animal to have its entire DNA (genome) sequenced, a monumental effort that took twelve years. Twelve years that could have gone to cancer research. But if those researchers spent their time working on cancer instead of working on worms, we would not have the cancer therapies we have today.
🧍♂️You see, sequencing the worm genome served as a proof of principle that it was indeed possible to sequence the human genome. Worms were the playground where the technologies used to sequence the human genome were refined and perfected. Today, scientists rely on the human genome sequence to develop therapies for a multitude of diseases, including cancer.
🪱So the next time you think someone’s science is useless, remember how the humble, useless worm made a healthier world possible.
Thank you for joining me this week! It was a lot of fun pretending to be an Instagram influencer. I hope I taught you a thing or two about science and life.
Till next time,
Robert 👋

The UPV Gender and Development Program and the Ugsad Regional Gender Resource Network join the nation in the observance of National Disability Rights Week with the theme "Promoting Inclusion: Celebrating Abilities and Advocating Access.”
Proclamation No. 957 declared the period of 17 to 23 July of every year as “National Disability Rights Week.” It amended Proclamation Nos. 1870 and 361 to be consistent with the purpose of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and to promote a rights-based approach on the celebration.
This is an opportune time to remind ourselves to be kind to everyone because not all disabilities are visible.
Together, let us strengthen our commitment to build a more inclusive society!

Do you have a growth mindset or are you someone who avoids challenges, who gives up quickly, avoids criticism, and feels threatened by the success of others? Acknowledgement is the first step in trying to rule over self-defeating thoughts and to change a fixed mindset.
A growth mindset is the belief that, with effort, the right strategies, and opportunities, intelligence and abilities can be improved over time. A fixed mindset, on the other hand, is the belief that there is little that we can do to change our capabilities. Having a growth mindset is crucial because it influences our motivation. People persevere when they know that one’s condition and capabilities are not fixed, and that there is hope in change.
