✅ HOW IS PCOS DIAGNOSED?

Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal disorder, diagnosed in women of reproductive age. It’s crucial to understand the diagnostic criteria for PCOS, which hinges on meeting at least two of the following three criteria:

1️⃣ Irregular or Absent Menstrual Cycles: This is often the most noticeable symptom. A regular menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days. In PCOS, cycles may be longer due to infrequent or absent ovulation.

2️⃣ Clinical or Laboratory Evidence of Hyperandrogenism: Women may exhibit signs such as hirsutism (excessive hair growth). Alternatively, blood tests may reveal elevated levels of androgens (male hormones) like testosterone.

3️⃣ Polycystic Ovaries on Ultrasound: This involves the presence of 12 or more follicles in one or both ovaries and/or increased ovarian volume. However, it's important to note that polycystic ovaries alone do not confirm PCOS.

A positive diagnosis of PCOS requires at least two of these criteria. Exclusion of other causes of similar symptoms, like thyroid dysfunction or hyperprolactinemia, is also essential. Early diagnosis and management can help mitigate complications such as infertility, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.
