Agricultural Economics: 100 Years in Asia and the Philippines

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AS A FIELD IS NOW MORE THAN 100 years old in the world. It started out as largely an empirical branch of general economics in the United States sometime around the 19th century. What empirical branch means is that the agricultural economics field used statistics and especially econometrics in investigating agricultural related problems or what they say as the “farm problem”. The field drew its initial thoughts from neoclassical political economy or in simpler terms using three important assumptions that include: (1) rational preferences or rational thinking of people; (2) individuals and firms maximize utility and profits; and (3) people act independently on full and perfect information. The field has expanded greatly in its coverage and continues to do so in helping understand agricultural development, poverty, hunger, food and nutrition security, natural resource management, and many more development issues.

Agricultural Economics started in 1919 in the Philippines at the University of the Philippines College of Agriculture (UPCA) under the Department of Rural Economics (DRE). The first department chair was Dr. Evett D. Hester, the Economic Adviser to the United States High Commission to the Philippines. In 1936, the Department was renamed as Department of Agricultural Economics (DAE), and to Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics (DAAE) in 2015. In 2019, the field is now 100 years in Asia and the Philippines.

The Department has come a long way since its inception in 1919. To this day, the Department has kept its social role in understanding the complex nature of Philippine and Asian agriculture: its economic processes, its impacts on food security and nutrition, and its relationship with the natural environment. At present, the instruction, research, and extension initiatives of the Department focus on: (1) Production Economics and Farm Management, (2) Agricultural Marketing and Prices, (3) Rural Finance and Cooperatives, (4) Food and Nutrition Economics, (5) Natural Resource Economics, and (6) Policy and Development. The Department’s offering of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Applied Economics, and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Economics has been key in improving the capacities of professional agricultural and applied economists in the country and the Asia-Pacific Region.
